Description
1 TIBERI.
Grate Furnace.
Patented Sept. 6, 1859.
t I LH JOSEPH TIBERI, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
GRATE,
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 25,352, dated September 6, 1859'.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH TIBERI, of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented av new and useful Improvement in Grate-Furnaces; and I do hereby declare that. the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing,'making part of this specication, in which- Figure I is a top view, Fig. 2 a front elevation, and Fig. 3 a vertical section through A A.
The object of my invention is to provide a better method of throwing the heat of the furnace either out in the room Yor up t-he chimney at pleasure, and also in providing an escape for the dust and ashes from the grate, behind the furnace, so that the said dust and ashes, shall pass up the chimney instead of coming out into the room.
To enable others skilled in the arts to which this appertains to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe the construction and application thereof.
Similar letters of reference represent corresponding parts of the different figures .of the accompanying drawing.
The furnace front is shown at A and is of the ordinary form.
D is the furnace place which should be made of the form shown, and may be of iron or brick as the case may require.
B is the furnace back which sets upon an iron bar I placed across the lower part of the furnace place as shown. The foot of the grate back is made to straddle the said bar I so as to vibrate about it as a center.
c c c is the grate which is of the ordinary construction.
O is a flue between the back of the furnace back and the flue back.
j, is a regulator by which the furnace back may be thrown back or forward, whereby the heat is either made to pass up the chimney or is thrown out in the room, according as the said back is thrown back or forward, and the said back is thrown back or forward by the application of a poker to the front end of the regulator, by which the said front end is depressed, which detaches the backs c c from the back D and allows the furnace back B tomove back or forth as the case may require.
I-I is a fire brick which is introduced into the furnace back to keep it'from burning out.
a. a c are holes in the plate D through which the dust and ashes from the grate is Ato escape when the plate or back .B is thrown back, so as to close the flue, there being a Hue made behind the plate D from the holes a a (shown in dotted lines at b Fig. 3) upward to allow the dust to escape.
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Arranging the adjustable furnace back B in the furnace' place, and in construct-ing and operating the same, substantially as set forth.
JOSEPH TIBERI.
