RECIPROCATING DEVICE Filed Oct. 6, 1949 IN VEN TOR.

Patented Dec. 19, 1950 SATES RATENT FFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in tools and is directed more particularly to improvements in a tool operating mechanism.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of mechanism which is constructed for imparting a reciprocating motion to a tool and is arranged to be operated by a rotating member such as a chuck or the like.
The mechanism of the invention is adapted for many and various uses but for purposes of disclosure it will be described for use in connection with a chuck such as is carried by the rotating spindle of a portable electric drill.
The mechanism in a general way includes a shank extending from one end of a body for engagement by a chuck and a reciprocating tool carrier at an opposite end of the body.
With the above primary object in view, it is another object of my invention to provide a construction of the above described character which is relatively simple and compact in accordance with the demands and desires of the purchasing public as well as of the manufacturers thereof and which is not only attractive in its appearance and practical in its value but also reliable in its operation and thoroughly efiicient in its use.
It is a still further object to provide a device which is constructed of relatively simple parts which are adapted to be readily'assembled and which when once assembled are positively and securely retained in operative relationship and which cannot be readily separated from each other, either accidentally or otherwise.
Other prime objects of my invention include: first, the provision of a simplified construction and arrangement of a tool operating mechanism which is strong, durable and compact in its structure and is distinctive in its appearance; second, the securement of a higher degree of accuracy in the manner of work performed therewith than has heretofore been possible with prior devices known in the art; third, the attainment of a higher degree of speed of construction and assembly of the device due to its simplification in design and its unique composition of parts; fourth, the attainment of a flexibility of a capability of adjustment by which a large variety of work can be produced by means of the same device; fifth, the achievement of a greater ease in adjustment and repairs; sixth, the provision of an improved tool operating mechanism which may be made more economically and with fewer operations in the manufacture of its parts, as well as in the assembly of the same, than prior devices known in the art, and seventh, the provision of a construction which may be readily installed with respect to the various purposes for which it is intended.
All of the above objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts thereof, as will fully appear by a perusal of the description below and by various specific features which will be hereinafter set forth.
To the above cited and other ends and with the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more readily apparent as the description proceeds, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claim hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view, with parts in section, of a tool operating mechanism embodying the novel features of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the mechanism of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the tool mechanism shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the above mentioned drawing annexed hereto and forming a part of this specification, I have shown but one embodiment of my invention which is deemed preferable, but it is to be understood that changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring now to the drawing more in detail, and referring more particularly to the preferred form of my invention selected for illustrative purposes, I have shown an elongated cylindrical tubular body at 2 which may be formed from metallic tubing if desired.
A rear cap d is secured in the rear end of the body by any suitable means such as screws 6.
A cylindrical cam 3 is rotatable in the body forwardly of the cap l and has a shank Ill extending rearwardly therefrom which is rotatable in the cap 4. The shank iii is adapted to be engaged in a chuck or the like which when rotated rotates the cam relative to the body when held in the hand.
A forward side of the cam 8 is provided with a cam face or rise l2, as shown.
A slide M preferably cylindrical in cross section is reciprocable in the body forwardly of the cam 3 and has a cam follower is extending rearwardly therefrom which is engageable by the cam. This follower has its longitudinal axis substantially parallel with the corresponding axis of the slide and is disposed at a side thereof.
An extension [8 extends forwardly from the slide and has a flat upper side 20 which is adjacent the plane of the longitudinal axis of the body.
A tool may be secured to the flat side 20 of the extension l8 by any means desired such as the screws 22. A tool is represented by T and in the form shown is in the form of a saw.
Any other tool which it is desired to reciprocate may be employed such as a file or the like.
A forward end plate 24 is provided which is secured to the forward end of the body as by screws 26, Welding or the like. The inner side or edge of the plate 24 is in engagement with the fiat face 20 of the extension to prevent rotation of the slide whilst allowing straight line reciprocating movements thereof.
A socket 28 is provided in the forward end of the slide at a side of the extension 18 and the rear end of a spring 30 is disposed therein and has its forward end in abutment with said plate 24.
The longitudinal axis of the spring is in substantial alignment with that of the follower so as to urge the slide rearwardly and the follower against the cam.
The parts are so proportioned that the working edge of a tool such as a saw is adjacent the plane of the longitudinal side of the body, as Shown in Fig. 2, which is desirable.
By arranging the follower and spring off center or at a side of the longitudinal axis of the slide, pressure is applied to the body and follower over the point of contact and rise of the cam for the most efficient operation.
With the shank of the cam gripped in a rotating chuck and with the body held in the hand the slide is reciprocated back and forth for operating the tool back and forth.
The mechanism is simple in form so as to be economical to manufacture while at the same time it is efficient in operation and adapted for long life.
The invention may be embodied in other speciflc forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all reforegoing description and all modifications andvariations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claim are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
Tool operating mechanism comprising in combination, an elongated cylindrical tubular body, a rear cap secured in the rear end of said body, a cam rotatable in the forward end of said body having a rise and a shank rotatably extending through said rear cap adapted to be engaged by a rotating chuck, a cylindrical slide reciprocable in said body forwardly of said cam having a follower extending rearwardly for engagement by said cam, an extension extending forwardly from said slide, means for securing a tool to said extension, a forward cap secured to the for- Ward end of said body, and spring means urging said slide towards said cam, a longitudinal side of said extension being flat and said forward cap having a flat side in sliding relation with the fiat longitudinal side to prevent rotation of said slide, said spring means including a coil spring adjacent the fiat longitudinal side of said extension having a forward end against said forward cap and a rear end in a socket provided in the forward end of said slide and having a longitudinal axis disposed in substantial alignment with the longitudinal axis of said follower.
