Description

Nov. 7, 1950 T. A. CALABRESE SHARPENING DEVICE FOR SCISSORS Filed April 22, 1946 mll ll HHHI i lm lh Patented Nov. 7, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SHARPENING DEVICE FOR SCISSORS Tindaro A. Calabrese, Woodside, N. Y. Application April 22, 1946, Serial No. 664,030
This invention relates" to sharpening devices and in particular to one employed for honing or sharpening scissors or shears.
* F A particular object of the invention is to provide a compact and readily adjustable sharpening device that can be mounted on the edge of a work-bench and which includes as a part of the combination a manually operable stone.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a guide for the sharpening stone which may be adjusted so that the stone will assume the proper angle and be maintained in such position for'sharpening the scissors with the proper beveled edge.
Still further objects of the invention are, to provide means for mounting the guide member so that it can be adjusted to any desired angle; to provide on the shears holder or blade supporting portion of the device adjustable means whereby the work may be raised or lowered to coincide 4 Claims. (01. 51- 69) implement I9 slides.
vide a slot in the adjustable guide head as at 40, inwhich the handle bar N3 of the sharpenin The width of the slot 40 is equal'to the thickness of the handle bar l8 so that the bar will be'supported at the desired angle to be reciprocated manually without any :attention on the part of the operator as to whether or not the stone is sharpening th blade at the with the angle at which the honing stone or implement is held; to provide a sharpening device having a minimum number of parts that will afford amaximum adjustment and one in which the adjustable features may be manipulated with a minimum of efiort.. i For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure- Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of a sharpening device illustrating scissors or shears in position therein.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of Fig. 1 having portions thereof broken away to more clearly illustrate details of construction.
Fig. 3 is a View in elevation looking from the left at Fig. 2.
Fig. .4 is a view'in elevation looking from the right at Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail I0 indicates a bench or other support upon which the sharpening-device is mounted. The latter ineludes av bracket having a base portion l2 attached to the bench l0 byseveral rivets 35 The bracket 35 has a vertical guide post 36 and a vertical blade post 31, the guide post 36 having supported, at the upper edge thereof on a hinge pinsm eii adjustable guide head 38, which is formed toprovide the spaced longitudinally ex- I tending flanges 39 which ar wide enough to proreceive the wing nut 43 by which the guide head 7 38 may be held in anyadjusted position as indicated' in outline in Fig. 2.
The blade post 31 of the bracket 35 is slotted as at 45 and provided with the side ears 46 in which are adjustably mounted for sliding movement, the lower ends 41 of a pair of bracket clamps 48 and 49. The lower end 41 of said clamps are frictionally secured at any vertical adjusted position to the blade post 31 by the use of the bolt and nut arrangement 50. The upper ends of the clamps are also brought forcibly toward each other to hold the cutting edge 20 of a scissor blade 2| in position by the use of a bolt and nut arrangement 5| about the bolt of which spring 52 is used to urge the clamps apart. It is evident therefore, that by these adjustable features as used in connection with the blade holder and the stone guide means, any desired angle of grind of the blade may be obtained and that either the blade holder or the stone guide may be individually adjusted to suit the conditions desired.
While Ihave referred to the use of the device for the purpose of sharpening scissors and shears it is to be understood that the features of the invention may be employed in a device for sharpening any implement such as knives or the like.
It is to be understood that if desired, the guide, which is used for supporting the sharpening or honing stone, may be constructed of any suitable horizontal plate or bar without the use of the guide slot previously shown.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim .as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
