This invention relates.to improvements-in holders for lipstick materialorthelike.

The principal objects of the invention are the provision of a holder for'lipstickmaterial-which is characterized by means-whereby the cap 'may be rotated relative to the base thereof without actuating the means ior elevatingthestick of material in the holder.

According to :prior art :devices of the type to which .the invention relates, the construction is such that as outer members :are relatively rtated accidentally orotherwise, the stick material is elevated so as to bring-up against a part such as the cap which is over the stick material. The stick material bein relatively soft the inside of th napbecomes smearedwith'theimaterial, the upper end of the stick is squashechand when the cap is removed the exposed parts are smeared with the material, all of which is objectionable.

According to this invention, means is provided whereby relative rotationof the cap and'base is ineffective to propel the "stick material and on removing the cap, actuating means becomes available to propel the stick, all -to the end that. the stick .material is not likely to be prop'ell'ed zllCl aim. With the foregoin and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my description proceeds, the invention consists in 1 certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claim hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein: v

Letters Patent 'No. 2,173,600 of .SeptemberlQ, I939. a fAnactuatorfi is provided which is in the form of'an elongated -sleeve and is arranged to slip over the cam member l6 when the said cam member is on the shell 2. The cam member tends to expand and the actuator tightly embraces it so as to contract it and friction-ally engage the same whereby as the actuator is rotated the cam member is rotated thereby so as to move the holder up and down in the shell through the key and slot A shell is shown at 2 in Fig. 1 which is-tubnliarfl shaped holder 8 is reciprocable up and down in the shell and it has a key II] which is slidable in arrangement described.

A cap 26 is provided which has a closed upper end, as shown, and it is arranged to loosely fit over the sleeve. That is, the construction is such that the cap'inay be rotated freely on the sleeve 24 without rotating the same all to the end that rotation of the cap accidentally or otherwise will not bring about rotation of the sleeve so as to result in longitudinal movement of the holder and stick of material carried thereby.

The cap may be slipped onto and off from the sleeve easily and readily and is releasably held for rotation thereon by interengaging groove and projection arrangement such as a groove 30 provided in the sleeve and a projection or projections 32 ,on the cap. As the cap is slipped over the sleeve the projection ,or projections snaps into thegroove.

In another way, the cap 26 as in Fig. 8 may be provided with a more or less continuous inwardly extending projection 34 for engagement with the groove 30. 7

Or if desired, the sleeve may be provided with one or more outwardly extending projections such as 36 and the cap 26 may have an internal groove 38 for receiving said projections, all to the end that the cap may be placed on and removed from the sleeve and rotate freely thereon whilst held against unwanted separation therefrom. In this way, the stick holder Will not be actuated by rotation of the cap.

A lower cap or base member 40 is provided which is arranged to fit tightly on the lower part 4 of the shell although it may not be desirable in all cases.

The components are shown in assembled relation in Fig. 7 and it will be seen from the foregoing that the cap may be freely rotated relative to the base without rotating the sleeve so as to bring about movement of the stick holder. The

cap may be readily removed to expose the sleeve or actuator 24 and facilitate movement of the holder 6 and stick of material. 1 1

The components will be made from relatively thin material, as for instance, metal, so as tobe light in weight without bulk and they may be formed by various means as may be desired.

Altogether the construction is such that the cap may be rotated on the sleeve without danger of elevating the stick material into the cap thereby obviating the objections of prior art constructions.

The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrativeand not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claim rather than by the foregoing description,.and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claim are therefore intended to be embraced therein.

What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

A holder device for applying lipstick material or the like comprising in combination, an elon- 4 gated tubular shell provided with an elongated slot in a side thereof and an outwardly extending stop adjacent an upper end thereof, an annular base integral with the lower end of said shell extending outwardly therearound, a holder for reciprocation up and down in said shell having a cam follower at a side thereof for projecting through the slot of said shell, a cam member formed fromrelatively thin sheet metal into the form of an elongated tube provided with a longitudinal slot in a side thereof and free unsecured longitudinal edges and adapted to be passed downwardly onto the shell over the stop thereof and held against longitduinal displacement therefrom'by said stop and the base of said shell, a tubular actuating member for surround- I ing said cam member, said cam member adapted to expand sufficiently laterally to frictionally engage said actuating member whereby it may be rotated by the said member, and a cup-shaped cap member adapted to freely slide onto and oil from said actuating member and arranged for free rotation thereon, said actuating member and cap member provided adjacent upper ends thereof with an annular groove and projection respectively arranged for releasable engagement and disengagement adapted to hold said cap member against accidental displacement from said actuating member while permitting free rotation of the cap member on the actuating member without rotation of the latter by the former.
