Description

May 30, 1950 o. M. GROSS SLIDING JAW END WRENCH Filed July 2, 1946 0.9%410 A4. @2058 INVENTOR.
-III 1 ATTORNEYS Patented May 30, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SLIDING J AW END WRENCH Oswald M. Gross, Detroit, Mich.
Application July 2, 1946, Serial No. 680,883
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to improvement in wrenches, and more particularly to wrenches of the type having a fixed jaw associated with a handle, and a relatively slidable jaw with means for locking the slidable jaw in adjusted relationship to the fixed jaw.
An object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this type of an improved construction by means of which the adjustment of the slidable jaw with respect to the fixed jaw can be more quickly and effectively made, and in which the application of pressure between the jaws in use will effectively lock the fixed jaw in its adjusted position.
Further objects of the invention will more particularly appear in the course of the following detailed description.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is an end view of an improved wrench;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the wrench;
Figure 3 is an edge elevation of the improved wrench;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view similar to Figure 2, showing the adjusted wrench fully contracted;
Figure 5 is an exploded perspective showing the parts of the wrench;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary side view of a modified form of the wrench;
Figure 7 is a fragmentary edge view of Figure 6;
Figure 8 is an exploded perspective of the parts illustrated in Figure 6;
Figure 9 is a fragmentary perspective of a further modified form of the wrench;
Figure 10 is a fragmentary, diagranmiatic detail showing a wall of the guide slot and the milled pivot pin; and,
Figure 11 is a perspective view of a slidable jaw associated with two compression springs.
Referring to the drawings, my improved wrench comprises a handle I formed at one end with a fixed jaw part 2 having a nut-contacting face I2 and associated with a laterally extending flange 3 having a guide slot 4 extending perpendicular to the plane of the jaw face l2. The flange 3 is defined at its lower edge by outwardl directed abutment shoulders 5-5 extending parallel with the guide slot I.
The slidable jaw I is associated with two depending flanges 1' adapted to embrace the fiange 3 associated with the fixed jaw and connected by a transverse pivot pin 10. Preferably, the upper wall I I of the guide slot 4 is transversely milled, as illustrated in Figure 10, and the pivot pin [0 is similarly milled to frictionally engage this edge of the slot. The lower edges of the flanges 1 of the slidable jaw are formed with abutment shoulders 8 offset with respect to the pivot pin ill, by means of which construction pressure brought by a nut or other object against the slidable jaw I will tend to rock the jaw I on the pivot 10 and produce a camming action between the abutment shoulders 8 of the slidable jaw and the abutment shoulders. 5 of the fixed jaw, thus fixedly locking the slidable jaw against opening with respect to the fixed jaw.
The same principles of construction are illustrated in the modified forms of wrenches illustrated in Figures 6 to 9. In Figures 6 and 7 the jaws are provided with offset portions [6, thus providing greater length to the notched clamping grooves I4; and I5, as is well illustrated in Figure 8.
In Figures 9 and 11, the jaws are provided with notched grooves l8 extending parallel with the handle rather than transversely thereof.
With a view to normally biasing the slidable jaw to a locked position, the flanges I of the slidable jaw are provided with cavities H extending substantially perpendicular to the abutment shoulders 5-5 and adapted to receive compression springs 9--9 which bear against the abutment shoulders 5-5 on the other side of pivot pin [0 with respect to the abutment shoulders 8-B.
Various modifications in the precise construction of the wrench will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, but within the scope of the present invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
End wrench comprising a fixed jaw and a slidable jaw, each of said jaws having complementary guide flanges, the flange associated with the fixed jaw formed with a guide slot having a roughened edge adjacent the fixed jaw and an abutment shoulder spaced from and parallel with the guide slot said shoulder having a smooth bearing face directed toward the guide slot and jaw, the flange associated with the slidable jaw having a roughened spin extending through the guide slot, said slidable jaw formed with an abutment shoulder offset with respect to the center of the pin and having a smooth bearing face directed away from the pin and jaw part and so positioned as to slidingly engage the abutment shoulder associated with the fixed Jaw.
