A spring latch or grip50-is secured to I the underside of the frame member 34 to engage the rear portion of the frame 32 when the device is folded for use as a divan, and a pair of legs 52 are provided on the forward edge portion of the frame member 34 to support the same when the device is unfolded.
.A linkage similar tothat generally known as a bed hinge is provided on each side of the hinge frame members 38 and 32. The other ends of these links arepivoted to a common bar 62, which may, in one preferred embodiment ofgle plate 42 carries a U-shaped latch member 10,
the free end of the latch member '66 being at all times extended through the latch member 10, and the latch bar 66 having a hookportion adapted to engage. on one end portion of the latch member 70 when the back 24 and seat 26. are disposed as illustrated on the left-hand side of Figure 1 and in Figure 2, and when the frame members 30 and 32 are disposed as indicated in the extension is allowed to contact the floor by means of its legs 52, in order to comprise a single bed. The action of the links 56 and 58 and the crossbar 62 in allowing longitudinal shifting of the hinged back, seat and extension, relative to the frame l8, will be clear from an examination of the figures. In folding the device, the above mentioned steps are reversed and the extension '28-is finally swung into the space 38 in the boxlike frame 18, the locking bar 66 engaged with the locking member 10 connecting the back and seat which pivot as a unit about the pins 44 into the position indicated in Figure 1 on the left hand side .of the figure.
Obviously many minor variations may be made in-the details of construction and the proportionment of the various elements in this invention wlthont departure from the spirit and scope thereof. Accordingly, limitation of this invention should be only in accordance to a proper interpretation of the terminology used in the ;subjoined claims.-
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is: v
. 1. An article of, furniture comprising a frame, a cushioned seat member and a cushioned back member hingedly connected together, a supporting and connecting linkage for said members including a bar pivoted to a, central portion of one end of said frame, hinge plates secured to said seat member and back member and connected by a hinge pin, latch means for said plates Figure 4, the elements being all substantial1y according to conventional practice in furniture of the same general type as this invention, although the linkage as an assembly has been modified both as to structure and arrangement for the particular requirements of this improved sectional divan.
Y first. raised into a position illustrated in Figure 2 andalso indicated. in dash lines in Figurefi, manipulation of the portions of the device being facilitated by the provision of a hand pull I2, indicated in Figure 2. The latch bar 66 is then releasedlfrom the latch member 10 by arquick movement of the seat 26 relative to the back 24 and a quick reverse movement, and with the seat and back depressed in their horizontal positions,
and two links having, one pair .of ends pivoted in spaced relation on said bar and the other end of one bar being pivoted on said hinge pin and the other end of the other bar being pivoted on the plate, secured to, theback member.
2. A convertible articleof furniture comprising a box-like frame, a. cushioned, seat member and a cushioned back member, a bar pivoted at one end to a central portion of one end of said frame, platessecured to the inner adjacent edges of said members and connected bya hinge pin, a latch bar, pivotally carried by one of said. plates and a complementaryfixed latch member carried by the other plate, saidlatch bar being locked in said, latch member to support the seat and back member in substantially right angularrrelationship, connecting links, terminally pivoted in spaced relation on the bar,.the other ends of the links being respectively pivotedon the hin e Pin and on the plate secured to the backmember.
