Description

mul/E1 MMT in Rober# H. McMurfr/e INVENTO s claims. 1
My invention relates to improvements in sectional furniture for children, the primary object in view being t'o provide for easy construction, and taking apart by children of different pieces of play furniture, and by means designed to interest, amuse and teach them the art of putting things together in proper relation.
More specifically, it is the object of my invention to provide for easy building by children of different articles of sectional furniture out of blocks specically constructed to form the particular types, and to provide means for easily and quickly fastening the blocks together so that the same may be readily pulled apart to separate the sections.
Another object is to provide blocks for building such furniture which are light in weight for easy handling by children, strong, and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other and subordinate objects, within the purview of my invention, together with the precise nature of my improvements will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a childs desk constructed with blocks of my invention;
Figure 2 is a view in front elevation, partly Vbroken away and shown in section, and illustrating a cabinet built by adding blocks to the desk;
Figure 3 is a view in perspective of one of the cubical blocks drawn to a larger scale;
Figures 4, 5, 6 and 7 are fragmentary views in vertical section illustrating, on a still larger scale, different forms of fastening devices for securing the cubical blocks together.
Referring to the drawings, by numerals, according to my invention, a number of hollow cubical blocks I, with one open side 2 are provided, and a number, one only being shown, of oblong blocks 3 of fiat, rectangular form with an open side 4.
The cubical blocks are formed of any suitable light, strong material with square wall panels fixed in any desired manner to skeleton frames B. In a pair of opposite wall panels 5 thereof, the cubical blocks I are formed at a pair of diagonally opposite corners with sockets 'I therein for a purpose presently seen.
The oblong block 3 is likewise formed, of wall panels 8 on a skeleton frame 9, but,` with any desired number of transverse partitions III forming compartments I I in said block.

Hunt- I4 and form tighter pull-apart connections than the dowel pins I2.
As shown in Figure 6, the sockets II may have semi-spherical inner ends I8 and the pins I9 may be provided with similarly shaped ends 2D, for the same purpose as the sockets I3 and pins I5.
In Figure 7 another form of fastener is provided comprising a rubber washer 2| seating in correspondingly shaped sockets 22 in the cubical block I.
With the blocks I and 3 described, a flat top desk, such as shown in Figure 1, may be built up with a top oblong block 3 supported at its ends on stacked tubular blocks I secured to- 25 gether, preferably by the dowel pins I2, the
blocks I and 3 being` arranged with open sides 2, 9 facing in the same direction. The oblong block 3 need not be fastened in place.
As shown in Figure 2, by lling in between the stacks of conical blocks I of the desk shown in Figure 1, with other stacks of conical blocks I, a cabinet may be built with numerous compartments facing in the same direction.
Obviously, other furniture structures may be built with my improved blocks, but those illustrated and described are deemed to sufficiently exemplify the utility and advantages of the invention.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention, without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification, without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. Toy building blocks for placing together with sides engaged to form toy furniture, and pullapart fasteners for detachably attaching the engaged sides of the blocks together comprising mating sockets in said engaged sides having enlarged inner ends, and'resilient pins having enlarged outer ends fitting in the inner ends of the wherein said inner ends of the sockets and Vsaid.
