Affoi-neys Patented Jan. 8, 1952 DISPLAY BOX Hamilton Whitelaw, Cranston, R. I., assignor to Douglas Young, Inc., a corporation of Rhode Island Application December 7, 1948, Serial No. 63,954
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a box of the type in which articles are displayed and particularly that type in which a pad or cushion is provided in the cover of the box and a hinge is provided.
It is usual in the formation of boxes with pads to provide a pad in the cover with the hinge cover of a separate piece.
One of the objects of this invention is to simplify the construction of boxes of this character heretofor provided.
Another object of this invention is to simplify the assembly operations which are necessary in the formation of boxes of this character.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box in "open position;
Figure 2 is a sectional view on line 2--2 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view illustrating the combined insert alone.
In proceeding with this invention, I provide a pad with a portion extending from it along one of the side walls of the cover and with a further portion to extend over the joint between the cover and body and cover the hinge and extend into the body of the box, the covering portion for the hinge being left loose and unsupported so that it may freely flex as the cover moves from open to closed position.
With reference to the drawings, l designates the body of the box and II the cover, which are hinged together as at l2, as shown in Figure 2. The body comprises a bottom wall [4 with upstanding front wall l5, back wall l8, and end walls l1; then there is a liner wall along the upstanding enclosing walls l5, l6 and I 1 as at [8 extending along the front and side walls I and I1, but being omitted from along the .back wall I6. Each of the body walls and liner walls, above described, may be covered with paper, as illustrated in Figure 2 to enhance the appearance of the box. A pad 19 may be positioned in the body along the upper surface of the bottom wall It.
The cover H comprises a top wall 20 having a depending front wall 2|, back wall 22, and side walls 23, each of which is covered with paper, as shown in the sectional view in Figure 2. The
back walls I8 and 22 are hinged as at l2 and the front and side walls of the cover will telescope over the liner I 8 when in closed position.
A unit designated generally 25 comprises a cardboard core 26 with a fabric or paper covering 21 which is tucked under the edges of the core 26 as at 28. This core and its covering is secured to the inner surface of the top wall 20. There is also provided a cardboard core 29 which is hinged to the core 26 such as by scoring the single piece-of cardboard forming both cores, and the covering of the same piece of fabric or paper extends over this core as at 30 and is tucked beneath its side edges. This core 29 and its covering extends over the back wall 22 of the cover. The fabric or paper covering of the same piece of material then continues as at 3| over the hinge I2 and along the inner surface of the back wall l6 of the body as at 32 and thence beneath the pad l9 as at 33, thus providing a complete one-piece covering of fabric from the inner surface of the cover to the inner surface of the body extending over the hinge.
I claim:
A rectangular box comprising a body having 'a bottom with upstanding back, front, and end walls, a cover having a top with depending back, front and end walls, a hinge joint between said back walls, a unit comprising a pad having a core with a covering secured to the inner side of the top wall with said covering extending from the pad over the back wall of said cover and over said joint between said back walls, said pad having a second core hinged thereto which extends along the back wall of the cover and said covering being also over said second core.
