My present invention relates to the general class of beds, and more specifically to an improved bed cover and holder which, while well adapted for use with larger beds, is especially designed for use with a child's crib, or as a small bed covering in the nature of a blanket, sheet, spread, or other piece of bed clothing. p

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a protective covering for a childthat may be loosely fastened to a bed to permit freedom of movement of the child, and which at the same time is retained in proper position as a constant protective sheet or layer of the bed clothing. To this end the invention consists essentially in a flexible sleeping cover having lateral extensible and collapsible walls in the nature of accordion pleats, together with ouick detachable means for fastening the free edges of the side walls to the bed, and other features, as will hereinafter be described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a complete example of a physical embodiment of my invention according to one mode I have devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention; but it will be understood that changes and alterations are contemplated and may be made in these exemplifying drawings, within the scope of my claims, without departing from the principles of the invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a crib equipped with the bed covering and holder of my invention for the protection of a sleeping child; and

Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view showing the underside of the covering, with attachments, and partly broken away for convenience of illustration.

In order that the general arrangement and utility of parts may readily be understood I have disclosed in Fig. 1 a conventional crib, with one side down, and provided with a body frame F for supporting the mattress M, and the ends and sides of the crib are equipped with usual upright rails as R.

The cover I may be a spread, sheet, blanket, or other bed covering of flexible material, preferably rectangular in shape. and of suitable size to conform to the size of the mattress and bed or crib.

In order to form a complete protective enclosure for the occupant of the bed the cover is fashioned with permanent side walls that are extensible and collapsible, to insure unobstructed and free movements of the sleeping child, and

To this end, along each of the lateraledges of the rectangular sheet or cover, a plurality of flexible and permanent infolds, as 2 and 3, with flexible bends at t and 4, are fashioned, which rest upon the mattress, and the bentfolds'or pleats forming the side walls may freely unfold or be extended when the cover is lifted by movements of the sleeping child. As. the cover is lowered by other movements of the child the side walls collapse upon the base plaits or folds 3, 3 as they rest upon the mattress thus providing a constantly effective covering for the child.

For anchoring the cover to the bed or mattress a retaining loop is transversely arranged to span the under side of the mattress or the bed frame, and preferably this loop is made in the form of a divided strap of elastic material with its outer ends attached to the base folds or free edges 3, 3 of the side walls.

The elastic anchoring loop may include the two strap sections 5 and 6, which are attached at their outer ends 1, I, to the free edges of the base pleats or folds 3, 3, and the adjoining inner ends of the sections are fastened together as by a buckle 8 which is located at a point that is readily accessible for fastening and unfastening the retaining loop, as the strap sections are passed under the mattress or bed frame.

The retaining loop is preferably located near or at the upper end of the cover, and the strap sections pass down the sides of the mattress and under the mattress or frame to provide a convenient and elastic retaining means for the cover.

In addition to the retaining loop, pairs of tietapes or cords 9 and Ill may be attached by tabs I I at spaced intervals along the free edges of the folds 3, 3, and these tapes may be tied to adjacent rails R of the crib, to maintain the proper shape and position of the cover. These tapes ma also be passed through eyelets i2 in elastic tabs 13 stitched or otherwise secured to the bend 4, 4 for additional security.

To eliminate the hazard of covering the child's face or head, the cover near its upper edge may be provided with members l4, M, of snap fasteners, which members are adapted to co-aet with complementary members fastened to the childs sleeping garment.

If and when necessary, the cover may be utilized as a base for additional layers of bed clothing, which layers may be secured to the cover by the use of twosets of fastening devices I5, l5, attached on the cover I for co-action with complementary members or devices attached to an additional layer of the bed clothing, and of course a plurality of auxiliary layers may thus be added if desired.
