Description

1951 w. D. STOREY 70,728 MUFFLER WITH FRUSTO-CONICAL BAFFLE AND REMOVABLY DISPOSED PERFORATED EXTENSION TUBE Filed Nov. 29, 1948 Inventor Attorneys Patented Oct. 9, 1951 UNITED STATES PAT MUFFLER WITH FRUSTO-CONICAL RAFFLE AND REMOVABLY -DISPOSED PERFO- RATED EXTENSION TUBE 2 Claims. 1
This invention appertains to novel and useful improvements in attachments for motorcycles.
The primary purpose of the present invention is to provide means whereby an acceptable and lawful motorcycle muffler can be altered with little effort and become an open exhaust with the muffler feature eliminated and which can then be quickly reassembled with little effort and again used as a standard mufller.
Another object of this invention is to support an extension pipe having a frusto-conical bafile thereon, at the end of a conventional exhaust pipe or exhaust pipes of a motorcycle engine.
Another object of this invention is to provide an extremely simplified device of the character to be described which may be used for the purpose of complying of certain regulations requiring mufflers and which is attractive and appealing to the eye.
Ancillary objects and features of novelty will become apparent to those skilled in the art, in following the description of the preferred form of the invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of the invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 and in the direction of the arrows, and;
Figure 3 is a sectional View taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 and in the direction of the arrows.
In general motorcycles are supplied with exhaust pipes. Some motorcycles use one while others use two and others may even use a greater number. For illustrative purposes one of the exhaust pipes seen at I3 is supplied and has a removable extension tube In fitted in the bore thereof.
Motorcycle riders are required to have an acceptable muffier in cities and restricted areas, but when motorcycles are on cross-country trips or in race competition, riders desire and prefer a muffler that may be readily and easily adjusted or transformed to an open exhaust rather than to continue to operate with a mufiler. The chief reason for this is that the engine operates cooler and functions more satisfactorily at high speeds. The specific structure and operation is as follows:
A frusto-conical baflle I6 is attached at its upper end I8 to the exhaust pipe l3 by any suitable means such as welding, brazing, soldering or the like.
A number of perforations [2 are supplied adiacent the exhaust end of the removable extension tube It! to permit egress of exhaust gases. The end of the tube 10 adjacent the perforations is supplied with a closure disc 30 having a central opening (unnumbered) with conventional threads therein. By this construction it is apparent that the exhaust gases must escape through the perforations I2.
The frusto-conical bafile has at its enlarged end a number of brackets 20. It is noted that these brackets may be substituted by a single peripheral flange if it is felt desirable. In each construction however, there is a number of threaded openings or apertures supplied for accommodation of screws 22.
The said screws 22 penetrate an end plate 24 which also has a number of apertures 26 of any size and shape, as desired. This end plate attaches to the disc 30 through the medium of the central screw 28.
In operation the device may be changed from a muffler mechanism to an open exhaust for a motorcycle in two Ways. The first is by removal of both the removable extension tube l0 and the end plate 24. The second is by the removal of the removable extension tube l 0 and the replacement of the end plate 24.
It is noted that there are at least three adjustments of the device, one being illustrated in Figure 2. The second is as shown in Figure 2 with the extension tube Ill removed and the third is as shown in Figure 2 but in the absence of tube 10 and plate 24.
By the above described structure not only is there an attractive device supplied but also, it is contemplated by the present invention to change the tone of the exhaust by the utility of more or less apertures 26, by the actual absence of removable extension tube It) and end plate 24, or by substituting different end plates of different sizes and shapes.
It is apparent that certain variations may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. Accordingly, limitation is sought only in accordance with the scope of the following claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a vehicle having at least one exhaust pipe, a muffler comprising a frusto-conical bafile having a narrow open end and a relatively wide open end, the narrow open end abutting and secured to the exhaust pipe, an extension tube removably disposed at one end in the bore of said exhaust pipe and being perforated adjacent the opposite end, an apertured closure attached to the wider end of said frusto-conical b'aiiie and the perforated end of said removably disposed extension tube, the actual end of the latter bein plugged with a closure disc, and to which end said apertured closure is centrally attached, thus supporting said tube.
2. An attachment for a vehicle which includes an exhaust pipe extending from an engine comprising a tapered bafile open at opposite ends and attached at one end to the exhaust pipe thereby forming a flared extension of the exhaust pipe, a removably disposed tube in the bore of said exhaust pipe and disposed axially within said baflie, said tube having openings therein and a substantially closed end and adapted to dampen engine sound When the tube is present in the bore of said exhaust pipe, an apertured closure detachably secured to the opposite end of said baflie and said tube, and said closure and said tube being removable from said bafile and exhaust pipe to form an open exhaust.
