This invention relates to a mine car safety stop.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a mine car safety stop which can be easily applied to a rail and upon the sleepers and which is so shaped when thrown onto the top of the rail that there is little opportunity for the wheels of the car to avoid the stop or for the same to become injured or bent and wherein there is provided clamp elements for fixing the unit to the rail besides fixing it to the sleepers.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a mine car safety stop for rails which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture and efiicient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of our safety D,

Figure 6 is a detail sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Fig. 7 is a detailed sectional view showing the manner of connecting the safety stop to the rails and Fig. 8 is a fragmentary detailed view of the connecting lever for the connecting links.
Referring now to the figures, Ill represents a rail which is mounted on sleepers I l in the usual manner. Beneath this rail and connected to the sleepers is the mine stop unit 12 of the present invention. Our mine stop unit comprises a base I 3 having cornered holes l4 through which spikes I 5 are extended for securing the unit to the sleepers ll. Before driving the spikes, the base 13 is securely clamped to rail l0. On the top of the base are clamp elements l6 having portions adapted to extend over the bottom flange of the rail, Figure 2. These clamp elements are fixed to the base by screws l1 and I8. On the opposite side of the rail and of the base are laterally swingable clamp elements l9 having a curved engaging face 2| adapted to be brought onto the rail in a wedge-like manner. The clamps l6 have upstanding flanges 22 which have cam surfaces 22' which bear against the head of the rail as seen in Figs. 2 and 4.
Pivoted on the side of the base l3 as indicated at 25, Figure 4, is a link 26 which is pivotally connected by a pin 21 with a link 28 that is coupled by an eye bolt 29 to the wheelchock 23. A pin 3| extends through the link 28 and the eye bolt 29 and is held in place by cotter pins 32. A handle 33 is secured to the link 28 by bolts 34. This handle has a projection 35 for retaining the links 26 and 28 in their extended positions with the wheelchock 23 raised. On the link 26, there may be fixed an arm 35 by bolts 31 by means of which connection can be made with a safety stop disposed on the opposite rail so that the two stops can be operated together. Such connection being accomplished by connecting one end of the link 46 in each opening 41 in the arm 36 and then connecting the opposite ends of the links in the opposite end of the lever 418. The lever 48 being pivotally mounted at 49 on the bracket 50 fixed to the side of the sleeper II. This arm 33 is so formed that it may abut the bottom face of the base [3 and thereby limit the drop movement of the links 26 and 28 by pulling outwardly 0n the handle 33, the wheelchock 23 can be pivoted to the drop position shown in Figure 2. Upon lifting the handle it can be thrown into its operative position shown in Figure 4.
The wedge elements [9 are pivotally connected to the base l3 by pivot bolts 4| and are retained in wedging engagement with the side of the rail in by cotter pins 42 which are extended into the base I 3.
The wheelchock 23 has an upwardly extending portion 43 which extends upwardly beside the rail I 8 when the wheelchock is in its raised position. From this portion 43 there extends an offset portion 44 with which car wheel 45 engages, Figure 4.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
We claim:
A car stop comprising a base, clamp elements on said base adapted to engage the bottom flange on one side of a rail, pivoted clamp elements on the base opposite to said first clamp elements that are adapted to be pivoted to engage the bottom flange of the rail on the opposite side thereof to retain the base in fixed relation to the bottom flange of the rail, upstanding flanges on said first clamp elements, cam surfaces on said upstanding flanges adapted to bear against the head of the rail, a wheelchock pivoted upon said flanges and adapted to be extended into operative position upon the rail or retracted to inoperative position laterally of the rail, lower and upperlinks pivoted respectively to the base and to the wheelchockand to one another for re taining the Wheelchock in position on the rail, an operating handle on the upper link whereby said links may be operated for controlling the position of the wheelchock, an armaconnected to the lower link, and a control linkage connected to the arm and to a similar'ca'r stop on the ad-l 15 jacent rail, whereby said linkage may be actuated to simultaneously move both wheelchooks from operative to inoperative positions.
