Application December 7, 1945, Serial No. 633,360
3 Claims; (01. 229 1c) The invention relates to improvements in display packages and has for its primary object the provision of an improved enclosure especially adapted for use as a display package, which is of simple construction and highly efficient in use. Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists of the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the enclosure embodying the invention may be readily made;
Fig. 2, a perspective View, with portions broken away, of the completed enclosure;
Fig. 3, an enlarged section taken substantially on line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4, an enlarged section taken substantially on line 4-4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5, a plan View of the blank from which a slightly modified form of enclosure may be readily made;
Fig. 6, a perspective view, with portions broken away, of said modified enclosure completed;
Fig. '7, an enlarged section taken substantially on line I-I of Fig. 6; and
Fig. 8, an enlarged section taken substantially on line 8-8, of Fig. 6.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the drawings comprises a blank of cardboard, heavy paper or the like, consisting of a central backing sheet ID, having side flaps II at each side, each side flap consisting of a side wall I2 and an inwardly extending portion at its extreme top. The side walls I2 are provided at each end with foldable flaps l3, and the upper portion of the side flaps II are provided at one end with foldable flaps M. A securing flap generally indicated at I5a is provided at the same end of backing sheet I0, said securing flap comprising an inner end wall I6, a triangular shaped front wall flap I5, trianglar stiffening flaps H, a stem I8, and a T-head I9. The upper portions of the side flaps II are provided with shoulders 20, as indicated. In use, the enclosure or package is formed by first folding the side flaps I I upwardly and then inwardly as indicated. Flaps I3 are folded inwardly, and flaps I4- folded over the corresponding flaps I3. The stiffening flaps H are folded inwardly on the inner face of wall flap I5, and the wall flap I5, stem I8 and T-head I9 are then folded upwardly and inwardly with the stem I8 folded around the 2 inner edge of wall flaps I5 and shoulders 20, the T-head I9 being inserted within the box and brought to a position adjacent the end wall I6, the stem I8 being of sufficient length to permit of such location of the T-head iii. In this way, a stiff, rigid and secure enclosure is provided, well adapted for the reception of various articles for display. By locating the T-head I9 adjacent the end wall It, the entire corresponding end of the enclosure is stiffened and the securing flap securely locked in place.
A cover fiap 2i is provided at the other end of the backing sheet II], having a tongue 22 insertable in the box rearwardly of the stem I8, as indicated in Fig. 3, to hold said cover flap in operative position to close the box when desired.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8, except for differences in size and shape, the backing sheet 23, side flaps 24, side walls 25, flaps 2G and 21, securing tongue 28, 29, 30 3| and 32, and shoulders 33, cover flap 34 and tongue 35, are mechanically the same as the corresponding parts in the enclosure already described, and operate in the same manner to produce the same results, so that they require no further description here. However, in this construction, the cover member 34 is provided at its free corners with longitudinally extending tongues 35 which are insertable in diagonal slits 31 formed by folding the stiffening flaps 39 inwardly against the securing flap, as indicated in Fig. 6. This furnishes a further means of securing the cover 34 in closing position.
By way of comparison of the form shown in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive with the modified form shown in Figures 5 to 8 inclusive, it is to be noted that the tongue 22 carried by the cover flap 2I (Figure 1) is practically the same as the tongue 35 carried by the cover flap 34 and serves the same purpose in the same manner, as shown in Figure 5. In further comparison, it is to be noted that the cover flap 34 having similar extending tongues 36 would be insertable rearwardly of the folded tabs I'I, which, in addition to reinforcing the securing flap I5, forms a fold as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and a. reinforced diagonal margin, as will be readily understood.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred forms of construction for carrying the invention into effect, these are capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise constructions disclosed, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In an enclosure comprising a backing sheet, having side flaps foldable, first upwardly from said backing sheet to form Side walls, and then inwardly to form oppositely arranged and inwardly extending substantially triangular margins; a securing flap at one end of said backing sheet comprisingan inner end wall, aifront wall flap, a stem member and a T-head, and foldable, first upwardly from said backing sheet to form an end wall, and then inwardly in juxta-aligh ment with said triangular margins; the said's'tem member adapted to fold inwardly in ,parallel. face alignment with the front wall fiap of'said se-' curing flap; and the T-heaidifoldably' connected with said stem, arranged and adapted to rest flat against said inner end wall to hold said stem member in assembled position; a'cover flap extending outwardly from the other end of said backing sheet foldable, first upwardly to form an end walland' then downwardly to form a hinged tapering closure in cooperation with said triangular margins; and an extended rectangular portion adapted to-be inserted within said enclosure under said-folded securing flap.
2. The construction specified in claim 1, in which the seeuringflap is'provided at its sides with triangular stiffening 'flapsdiagonally foldable against the inner face thereof, thereby 4 forming in the completed enclosure inwardly converging slits, the cover flap being provided at the other end of said backing sheet with corner tongues insertable in said slits. V
3. The construction specified in claim 1, in which the cover flap is provided at the opposite end of said backing sheet with a centrally placed tongue insertable rearwardly of said bottom margin; and companion tongue members on opposite 1 sides of said centrally placed tongue adapted to be inserted in'diagon'alslits formed'by folded triangular stiffening flaps carried by said se- ERSEL C. MULNIX.
