(Cl. 173259) My invention relates to a device for connecting an electric cable or wire to an electric post, for instance to a post of a storage battery.
It has heretofore been customary to ensure the electric connection between a post of a storage battery and the electric cables or wires which feed the power to devices such as starter, horn, headlamp, ignition distributor, etc. by means of a cable terminal provided with an eye, which is tightened on said post.
This practice of the prior art possesses disadvantages. A wrench for tightening and loosening is necessary. Further and above all, this practice causes the post to be sulphated and consequently to be damaged after a while.
The object of my invention is the provision of a device for connecting a cable or wire to a post of a storage battery, enabling one to mount or remove the cable without using any tool and entirely preventing the post to be sulphated.
This device comprises the combination of a metallic, resiliently deformable capping member in which a post fits, of means to removably secure a cable terminal to said member, means to obtain the resilient tightening of said member on the post, and a cover, for instance, of a nonrigid material to enclose the cap and form a tight receptacle for grease or oil.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, a centrally apertured member I whose object is to cap and tighten onto a frusto-conical post I8 of a storage battery, comprises a frusto-conical body portion 2, having longitudinal slots 4.
Externally of the top of the member I, which is threaded, a ring 6 is screwed. This ring has a frusto-conical extension I causing, when the ring 6 is screwed up, the frusto-conical portion 2 of member I to be contracted and to be tightened on the post.
Internally of the top of member I an externally hollow threaded rod 9 is screwed, whose head 8 ensures, by means of a shim II, the tightening of the terminal or end I0 of an electric cable Illa.
A cup I2 of rubber or elastic material is provided around the ring 6 and tightly applied on the post I8 by a brim I3 designed at its lower portion.
The upper brim I2b of this cup is also tightly applied against the ring 6. Finally, the end of the frusto-conical extension I of the ring 6 fits in a groove I6 provided at the lower portion of the cup.
This cup I 2 forms a cover providing around the post I8 and connecting device a tight chamber into which it will be possible to deliver grease. This grease will be distributed through channel 9a by means of an axial lubricator applied to the central bore of the head of the pressure screw 8 which clamps the terminal ID.
The above device enables a fast mounting and disassembling. It is easy to understand that, for removing from the post I8 the set comprising the member I and the ring 6, it is enough, after having removed the shim II and the terminal I 0, to screw home the screw 9 until the end of said screw 9 is in contact with the upper end of the post I8. Upon further screwing of screw 9, the set of members I and 6 is caused to be raised.
As the post I8 of the storage battery is covered with grease, the sulphating and oxidizing of the parts which are in contact may be reduced.
As it is shown in Figure 2 which is a crosssection of a modification, the apertured cap I3 comprises a head portion and a hollow body portion I4 having a frusto-conical internal surface and having longitudinal slots I5. The object of this cap is to be fitted and tightened on the frusto-conical end of a post I8 of a storage battery.
When the cap is arranged on the post I8, the tightening is ensured by driving, on the outside of the body portion I4, a steel ring or ferrule I9, in any suitable way, for instance by means of a hammer, a press, etc.
The end In of the terminal of a cable Illa may be arranged on the top of the cap I3, the cable Illa being thus connected to the post I8.
The cable terminal is tightened by means of a screw or threaded rod I6, the head IBa of which may be set in a disc ll of synthetic material. This screw or threaded rod I6 is screwed in the cap I3.
A cup 20 of rubber or synthetic material and having a bottom apertured is provided around the connecting device. The brim 20a. of this cup fits in a groove IIa of the disc I1, and a side 3 aperture 200 is provided for the passage of the end ID of the cable terminal Illa. The grease covering the end of the post is contained in the cup 20.
For removing the connecting device from the post, the cable terminal is previously removed, then the threaded rod [6 is screwed home in such a manner that it exerts a pressure on the end of the post [8, which causes, by a further screwing up, the cap I3 to raise.
What I claim is:
1. A device for the connection of an electric conductor to an electric post, comprising in come bination a cup having a bottom aperture adapted to fit tightly on said post, said post projecting within said cup through said aperture, said cup providing, round said post, a chamber for receiving a protecting agent, means for electrically connecting said conductor to said post while providing a cover for said cup, said means comprising a capadaptedto, fit on said post within said cup and provided witha threadedaperture in its, top part, means for tightening the walls of said cap against said post and means for clampin s id, electric conduct r on a d c p, said last means engaging said threaded aperture.

3. The device of claim 2, said stem of said screw having an axial length considerably greater than the thickness of said head portion of the cap, for the purpose set forth.
4. The device of claim 1, said last means comprising a headed screw engaging in said threaded aperture, said device including an insulating cover gripping; said screw head and having an annular groove in its lower face for engaging the upper edge of said cup.
5. The device of claim 1, said cup having a lateral opening for the passage of said conductor.
6. The device of claim 1, further comprising a constraining ring on said cap, arranged for sliding, axial movement along the same RENE NOIR.
