ATTD RN EYE Patented Apr. 10, 1951 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE 1 Claim. (01. 160-23) My present invention relates to an improved window appliance and more particularly to a housing adapted for mounting above the upper window sash together with a shade, a screen, and
a storm sheet and their rollers, and means for sealing the sides and bottom of the screen and/or storm sheet when alternatively used.
According to my invention I employ a pair of retainers for insertion in the upper corners of the window frame to receive end brackets of the housing and in the housing I use three conventional shade rollers one each for the shade, the flexible screen and the flexible storm sheet. A guide frame on the sides of the window frame has a pivotally mounted strip which may be closed to press the extended screen or sheet against the guide frame.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention according to the best mode I have thus far devised, but it will be understood that various changes and alterations may be made in the exemplified structure within the scope of the appended claim.

Referring now to the drawings, I have illustrated a window including the side trim panels 2. lower sash 4, and frame 6. The usual sill 8 is illustrated as is the top trim ID.
A pair of retainers I2 have edge flanges I4 and these retainers are suitably secured in the window frame at the opposite upper cornersthereof. The lower flanges are notched to allow the V-ends N5 of springs [8 to extend therethrough and the springs are secured to the flanges as at 2|].
The housing 22 is rectangular in cross-section and has in the bottom wall an elongated slot 24, and the housing is closed at"each end by brackets 26 having a peripheral flange 28 notched at 36. These brackets with the housing therebetween may he slid between the flanges [4 of retainers l2 and the V-ends IE will engage the notches 36.
The brackets have a series of raised disks 32, one of which has a central round aperture 34, and the others have rectangular apertures 36 to receive the usual round or rectangular shade roller ends.
The rollers 38, 40 and 42 have wound thereon respectively an opaque window shade 44, a plastic screen 46, and a solid transparent plastic sheet 48. Each of the sheets 44, 46, and 48 has a pull bar 50 bent upon itself and suitably secured to its sheet, and in addition the sheet 48 has attached to its pull bar, a layer 52 of felt or other suitable sealing material.
Obviously from the above description the shade 44 and either the screen 46 or the sheet 48 may be lowered as weather and other conditions may require.
In order to seal the edges of the screen 46 or sheet 48 I employ a U-shaped guide having a base 54 secured as by screws 56 to the panels 2 one leg 58 being longer than the other leg 60. The leg 60 has spaced hinge loops 62 for pintle 64, and adapted for co-action therewith I provide a hinge plate 66 having hinge loops 68 and bent at 16 and then upon itself at 12 to form pressure plate or foot 14 which has a sealing strip 16.
The leg 58 is positioned so that the screen 46 or sheet 48 will lie vertically proximate theret and when the screen or sheet is lowered. the plate 66 may be swung in so that the pressure foot 14 and strip 16 will press the screen or sheet against leg 58.
The guide terminates short of the sill and normallybefore the hinge plate is swung in the pull bar 56 of the screen or sheet is pressed against the sill parallel thereto and when the hinge plate is pivoted inwardly the screen or sheet is locked in extended position and at the same time the pull bar is pressed against the sill due to the snu fit between the lower edge of the hinge plate and the pull bar.
In Figs 12 through 14 I have illustrated a modifled form of retainer and bracket for the housing 22 wherein the retainer 18 has top and bottom flanges 80 and on the inner wall spaced from the lower flange I use a spring clip 82 secured as by rivet 84 and formed with two convex extensions 86.
The bracket 88 has an annular flange 90 and a central cruciform platform 92 having in each bracket two round apertures 94 and one rectang-ular aperture 96. As the bracket is slid into the retainer the spring clip will engage in the vertical arm of the cruciform platform to retain the bracket and housingin the window frame.
By the use of my invention the need for demountable window screens and storm sash is eliminated and in a single attachment or appliance I provide a shade, a screen and a storm sheet selectively useable and stored easily in the housing when not in use.
