Patented Mar. 9, 1948 QlEH'HUt 11 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in sight for firearms.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a sight 'for firearms well adapted for rifles and the like which has a wide range of adjustability or adaptability to conditions and the requirements of the user.
Second, to provide a firearm or gun sight assembly having a plurality of sight elements in which the sight elements are effectively supported in erected position or in collapsed or retracted position.
Third, to provide a gun sight assembly comprising a plurality of peephole sight elements and post-sight elements which may be quickly adjusted for cooperating relation.
Fourth, to provide a structure having these advantages which is economical to produce and may be readily applied to standard types of firearms in extensive use.
Objects relation to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved gun sight in its operative relation to a gun barrel shown conveniently by dotted lines.
Fig. 2- is an end elevation, a gun barrel being indicated by dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view in section on line 3-3 of Fig. 4, the sight elements all being positioned within the sight tube.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3, one of the sight elements being shown in dotted lines, the arrow indicating that it is being swung into the storage recess.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view partially in section on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the body or bracket portion, the section corresponding to that of Fig. 3.
Fig. 7 is a cross section corresponding to that of Fig. 4 with one of the sight elements in its fully collapsed position.
Fig. 8 is a side view of four of the sight elements, two of them being peephole sight elements and two of them bead post sight elements.
In the accompanying drawing, l represents the barrel of a firearm such as a rifle. The embodiment of my invention illustrated comprises a bracket member designated generally by the numeral 2 having a dovetailed base 3 adapted to be removably engaged with the dovetailed seat 4 provided therefor on the firearm barrel. The bracket member comprises a sight tube 5 internally threaded at each end as indicated at 6 to receive the tubular clamping members I. These clamping members have knurled finger piece 8 to facilitate adjustment.
The sight tube has longitudinally spaced transverse slots 9 therein each adapted to receive a plurality of thin flat sight elements disposed in sets in side by side relation.
The bracket member is provided with slot-like storage recesses l0 aligned with the slots 9 and is also provided with pivot ears II and I2 which are so positioned that the spaces l3 between the pivot ears are aligned with the slots 9 and the storage recesses Ill. The pivot pin I4 is arranged through the pivot ears and shouldered at Ml to engage a bracket pivot ear l2 and clamp the pivot ears of the bead sight elements against the edges of the central pivot ear II. The nut or clamping sleeve I5 is threaded upon the pivot and has a reduced sleeve portion |5l adapted to engage a bracket pivot ear l2 and clamp the pivot ears of the peephole sight members against the central pivot ear II. The pivot has aknurled finger piece It while the clamping nut I5 is knurled to provide a finger piece. The peephole sight elements I! are formed of thin fiat stock and have pivot ears I8 receiving the pivot pin I4, these pivot ears permitting the sight elements to be swung to retracted position in one of the storage recesses H) or to erected position within the sight tube as shown in Fig. 3. The peephole sight elements have graduated peephole openings l9 arranged with the larger to the rear as shown in Fig. 3. These peephole sight elements are arranged to be swung into the forward slot of the sight tube.
I also provide a plurality of thin fiat bead sight elements 20 having graduated bead posts 2|. These sight elements 20 are annular and their posts are radially disposed. These sight elements are provided with pivot ears 22 corresponding to the pivot ears I 8. The bead sight posts are arranged with the larger to the rear.
The inner edges of the slots 9 constitute annular shoulders 23 which are opposed to the inrbier cl'amping ends of the tubular clamping memers This arrangement permits the sight elements to be individually and selectively adjusted and secured in their erected or retracted position, being secured in their retracted position by means or the clamping pivot and in their erected posi- IltUUHH tion by means or the tubular clamping members. They are very securely retained in erected position, and to facilitate adjustment and positioning they are provided with peripheral lugs 24 which constitute finger pieces and also stops, coacting stops 25 being provided on the bracket member to correctly position the sight members in erected position.
I have illustrated and described my invention in a highly practical embodiment. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain modifications and adaptations which I contemplate as it is believed this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a gun sight assembly, the combination of a bgaoket-member comprising a sight tube having a slot transverse the axis of the tube, said bracket member having a sight element storage recess aligned with said slot in said tube and pivot ears having axes parallel to the axis of the tube and offset therefrom and between said tube and recess, the space between the pivot ears being aligned with said slot and recess, a pivot pin disposed through said pivot ears and provided with a clamping element, a swingable sight'element having a pivot ear engaging said pivot pin, whereby said sight element may be swung into said sight tube or into said aligned storage recess, said pivot pin and clamping element being relatively adjustable to clamp said sight element pivot ear, and a tubular clamping member threaded into said sight tube, the inner edge of said slot constituting a clamping shoulder opposed to said tubular clamping member whereby the sight element adjusted within the sight tube may be clamped in its adjusted-position, said sight element when in clamping engagement with said clamping shoulder being disposed in the plane of the transverse slot, said tubular clamping member when loosened permitting the sight element to be swung onits pivot pin to the inoperative position outside said sight tube.
2. In a, gun sight assembly, the combination of a bracket member comprising a sight tube having a slot transverse the axis of the tube, said.
bracket member having a sight element storage recess aligned with said slot in said tube and pivot ears having axes parallel to the axis of the tube and ofiset therefrom and between said tube and recess, the space between the pivot ears being aligned with said slot and recess, a pivot pin disposed through said pivot ears, and a swingable sight element engaging said pivot pin between 5 said pivot ears and disposed in the plane of said slot whereby said sight element may be swung into an operative position in the sight tube or into an inoperative position in the storage recess of the bracket member.
3. In a gun sight assembly, the combination of a bracket member comprising a, sight tube having a slot transverse the axis of the tube, sight element having an exterior rim portion to be supportingly engaged by the inside wall of the tube, said sight element being pivotally mounted to be moved through said slot laterally and upwardly from an operative position inside said tube to outside said tube, said bracket having means for supportingly engaging said sight element in an inoperative position outside said tube, and a tubular clamping member threaded into said sight tube, the inner edge of said slot constituting a clamping shoulder opposed to said clamping member for clamping the sight element rim portion whereby the sight element positioned within the sight tube may be clamped in its operative position.
4. In a gun sight, the combination with a sight tube having a transverse slot through a longitudinal side thereof, one of the side walls of the slot constituting an annular clamping shoulder, a sight element, meansfor movably supporting the sight element, to permit the same to be moved from an inoperative position outside said tube to an operative position in the slot of said tube, and a tubular clamping member threaded intosaid sight tube to coact with the clamping shoulder thereof in clamping the sight element in operative position in said tube, said sight element when in clamping engagement with said clamping shoulder being disposed in the plane of the slot to permit the same to be moved directly to an inoperative position outside said tube. 45 ERNEST 0.
