DRAWING TABLE.
Walter Lambert, Yakima, Wash.
Application August 9, 1945 Serial No. 609,841
(01. sue-3s)- 2 Claims.
My invention relates broadly to tables and more particularly'to a general purpose table adapted for conversion into an artists or draftsmans drawing board.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a composite construction of table which may be readily converted from a flat top support to an artist's Ordraftsmans drawing board.
Another object of my invention is to provide an arrangementof double top having a sectionalized portion which is angularly displaceable out of the plane of the flat table top for elevation at selectedanglesfor facilitating the use of the table top as an artists or draftsmans drawing board.
Another object of my invention is to provide a construction of concealed hinge and support for interconnecting a movable section of a table top with the tableand enabling the section to be moved to selected angular positions for use as an artists'or'draftsmans drawing board.
Other. and further objects of'my invention reside in the construction of adjustable table top and hinge construction as set forth more fully in the specification hereinafter following by reference tothe accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of the table of my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the table of my invention showing a sectionalized portion thereof elevated for use as an artists or draftsmans drawing board; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged end elevational view showing the concealed hinge construction of my invention and the manner of supporting the sectionalized table top at an angle with respect to the main portion of the table; Fig. 4 is a view illustrating a sectionalized portion of the table top dropped to a position in the plane of the other sectionalized portions of the table top when the table is used as a fiat support; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the multiple section hinge and the supporting means associated therewith for facilitating the supporting of one sectionalized portion of the table top at an angle with respect to the other sectionalized portions thereof.
Referring to the drawings in detail reference characters I and I designate the flat sections of a table supported by a rear rail 2 and a front rail 3 mounted on suitable legs represented at 23. A pair of cross rails 4 are provided transversely of the table for the purpose of aiding in the support of a central section 5 constituting an artists or draftsmans drawing board. The central section 5 is normally aligned with the flat sections I and l of the table and serves as a flat top support or usable surface for general purposes.
The front rail 3 is provided with a pair of V- shaped pockets 24 and 25 for normally receiving, concealing and supporting the triangularly shaped blocks II that are secured by suitable means such-as screw 22 to the central'section' 2! of the multiple leaf hinge structure shown more particularly in the perspective view in Fig. 5.
The multiple hinge comprises central section 2i and a pair of sections Ill and I2 hingedly connected-with central section 2| through the pintles it and 20. The triangularly shaped block H is secured-to the central section 2! of the leaf hinge and'in the position illustrated in FigLB serves to support the section 5 of the table top as an artists or-draftsmans drawing board, while inLFi'g. 4 the triangularly shaped hlock l I serves to support the section 5 .in alignment withthe sections l and I of the table as a general purpose horizontal surface support. The multiple section hinge has the :hingedly connected section it thereof secured to the section 5 ofthe table by means of screw it. The hinge section-i2 is connected-to the front rail 3 by suitable means such as'bolts'l3 which-are spaced thr'ough'apertur'es 26 in hinge i2 to extend on opposite sides of the V-shape'd pockets 25 formed in the front rail 3.
The under surface of the section 5 of the table top is provided with spaced connecting members I and 8 which serve as connecting means for the bar memberB. The bar member 6 is provided with spaced notches or recesses 6a, 6b, 50, etc., which are adapted to engage with the spaced screw or dowel members I5, I6, I! and ta disposed at spaced intervals on the interior faces of the transverse rails 4. The bar 6 is provided with a hook-shaped end 21 which is adapted to be engaged selectively in either of the members 1 and 8. Members I and 8 are in the form of screw eyes with aligned eye-s. Member 9 is in the form of a spring clamp. The object or purpose of spring clamp 9 is to hold the lower end of bar members 6 so that when the drawing board or table top 5 is not in use the bar members 6 are held in a position parallel to the under surface of the drawing board or table top 5. Bar 6 is thus enabled to detachably selectively engage the members 1, 8 or 9 in the under surface of the section 5 of the table top and to selectively engage in any of the notches 6a, 61) or the spaced screws or dowels l5, I6, I! or l8 for maintaining the section 5 of the table at any desired angle to facilitate the work of the artist or draftsman.
It will be understood that there are a pairv of symmetrically arranged multiple hinges and a pair of symmetrically arranged bars 8 and engaging means therefor arranged as in Fig. 1 beneath the section 5 of the table.
The triangular block II serves as a rigid support for the hinged section 5 of the table by having its surface IIa thereof bearing directly against the under surface of hinge section I when the table top section is elevated as in Figs. 2 and 3, whereas faces Ila and I lb of block I I serve as supports for the section 5 of the table top against the V-shaped socket walls in the spaced recesses 25 disposed in the front rail 3. Forces which might tend to distort or twist the parts of the structure are resisted by the c-oaction of the shaped block II and the socket in which the block is adapted to fit.
The table of my invention is particularly suitable for showcard writing, sign painting and artist's and drafting work generally where economy of space is essential and where a general purpose table must be conveniently convertible into an artists or draftsmans table.
While I have described my invention in one of its preferred embodiments, I desire that it be understood that modifications may be made and I intend no limitations upon my invention other than may be imposed by the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. A table comprising a multiplicity of fiat coextensive sections including a pair of stationary portions and a central movable portion, rail members supporting said portions, one of said rail members having angularly disposed recesses in spaced positions adjacent the top edge thereof, multiple section hinges interconnecting said rail member and the central movable portion of the table, each of said multiple section hinges including a section attached to said rail and a section attached to said central movable portion, an intermediate section pivotally connected at oppositeends with the aforesaid sections and a triangularly shaped block carried by each of said intermediate sections, said blocks being movable out of the angularly disposed recesses in said rail member for supporting the section of the hinges connected to the central portion of the table and being movable into the recesses for substantially supporting said central movable portion in alignment with said stationary portions.
2. A composite table and drafting board comprising a railed support, a flat top carried by said railed support, an angularly movable plane section constituting part of said flat top, said railed support including a pair of V-shaped recesses disposed therein at spaced intervals, 2, pair of multiple section hinges, said hinges each including leaf members, one of which is connected to said angularly movable plane section, the other of said leaf members being connected with said railed support on opposite sides of the recess therein, an intermediate hinge member pivotally connected at opposite ends with said leaf members and a triangularly shaped block secured to said intermediate hinge member and having the angular faces thereof operative to establish supporting connection with the faces of the V- shaped recesses in said railed support when said angularly movable plane section is dropped to a position in a plane with the table top, one of said angularly disposed faces serving to support the leaf member which connects with said angularly movable plane section when said angularly movable plane section is elevated with respect to the table top.
