UNITED STATES PATENT Y OFFICE.
MORGAN LASHER, FREDONIA, KANSAS.
GRADING, DITSCHINNG, AND LEVELING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,659, dated June '7, 1881.
Applicationfiled March 29,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORGAN E. LASHER, of Fredonia, in the county of Wilson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grading, Ditching, and Leveling Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in a combined ditching, grading, and leveling machine; and it has for its objects to provide an apparatus that can be applied to an ordinary lumber-wagon, and by means of which the earth may be thrown to either side by means of an adjustable scraper or carried forward by said scraper and deposited at any desired point. These objects I attain by the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whicl1-- Figure 1 represents a plan view of my apparatus, and Fig. 2 a detail view of one of the standards and uprights.
The letter A indicates theframe of the apparatus, which is provided with transverse bars B, which are recessed at the ends, as indicated by the letter O, and are adapted to set between the uprightsof the wagon and be held in place thereby.
The letter D indicates two segmental guides secured to the frame, one at each side, and E two standards or hangers, one secured in each guide, and confined therein by means of the transverse bars F in such manner as to permit the standards to be moved back and forth in the guides. The standards. are provided with brackets Gr H, carrying friction-rollers I. Through the upper brackets, G, pass the uprights K, which bear against the friction-rollers I in the respective brackets. The upper ends of these uprights are perforated for the reception of the ends of the levers L, which set in the perforations. The levers are fulcrumed in slots in the upper ends of the standards E, and each lever is provided with a slidingpin, M, which is adapted to engage a ratchet, N, on the standard, and thus be held in any desired position. The lower ends of the uprights carry a transverse beam, P, to which is secured a curved steel blade or scraper, B.
To one end of the scraper may be secured a plow, S, and at the other an extension, T. These are detachable, and may be employed when desired or dispensed with altogether.
TheletterUindicates the drivers seat, which is also detachable, in order to permit the apparatus to be used as a hay-rack when desired. When thus employed the pivoted standard V is elevated so as to support the hay at the end.
It will be perceived that the scraper may be readily adjusted to sit obliquely to the frame of the apparatus, so as to throw the dirt to either side of the apparatus, or sit squarely across the frame, so as to carry the dirt with it and deposit at it any desired point. By means of the movable uprights the scraper may be adjusted vertically at either end.
The letter W indicates a series of apertures formed in the upper and outer rails of the guide for the reception of the pin Y, by means of which the standards maybe held-in any (lesired position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In combination with the frame, the segmental guides and movable standards, the vertically-adjustable uprights, and the levers provided with catches, whereby the blade or scraper may be adjusted to throw the dirt to either side or carry it forward, substantially as specified.
2. In combination with the standards, ad-
justably secured in the segmental guides, the
brackets provided with friction-rollers, and the vertically adjustable uprights carrying the scraper, and mechanism for adjusting the same, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. The combination, with the bolsters of a wagon and its uprights, ofa removable frame provided with transverse bars notched at their ends, and adapted, in connection with the uprights, to securely hold the frame in position 5 on the wagon and admit of easy removal of the same therefrom, all substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MORGAN E. LASHER.
