This invention relates to window locks or what are sometimes referred to as burglar stops, and it has reference more particularly to devices of that character designed to be applied to sliding sash windows to definitely limit the distance to which a window may be opened.
It is the principal object of this invention to provide a device of the character above stated comprising a plate designed to be fixed to one sash of the window and a stop element that may be adjusted to and secured at different locations on the plate, to be engaged by the other sash when it is moved toward an open position.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of the kind above stated, wherein the stop member limits the extent to which the window may be opened to a distance less than that required for a person to enter therethrough and may not be released by one at the outside of the window and may not be removed from the plate for opening the window to its full extent except while the window is completely closed.
Other objects and advantages of the invention reside in the details of construction of the parts of the device and in their mode of assembly and use as will hereinafter be fully described.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, I have provided the improved details of construction, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, Wherein Fig. l is an elevation showing parts of the upper and lower sliding sashes of a typical window to which a burglar stop, embodied by this invention, is applied.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the burglar stop.
Fig. 3 is a central, longitudinal section of the same as affixed to a window sash.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the stop element of the device illustrating its securing stud.
Fig, 5 is an enlarged fragmental view of parts of the device, showing the upper end portion of the stop member partially broken away for better illustration of its holding stud and indicating, in dotted lines, the position to which the stop element is required to be turned relative to the base plate, in order that it may be shifted to a different location on the plate.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged, cross section on line 6-6 in Fig. 2.
Referring more in detail to the drawings In Fig. 1, l0 and II, respectively, designate parts of the upper and lower sliding sashes of a typical form of a residence window; it being understood that these sashes are held slidably in a window frame of a suitable kind, a part of which 3 Claims. (Cl. 292342) is designated at I2 in Fig. 1, and that the guideways in which the sashes slide are separated by a stop strip designated by reference character I3, as in Figs. 3 and 6.
The purpose of the present device, referred to as a burglar stop, is to limit the extent to which the lower sash may be raised or the upper sash lowered to a distance less than that required for a person to gain entry through the window, but sufficient for ventilation or fresh air entry.
In its present preferred form of construction, the device comprises a flat, elongated base plate l5, preferably of metal, that is formed near its upper and lower ends, and at intermediate points if so desired, with holes l6 for reception of securing screws. In Fig. 3, such screws are designated by reference character ll.
Formed about the marginal edges of the plate l5, on its inside, are ribs or flanges l8, designed to space the body portion of the metal plate outwardly from the surface of the part to which it may be applied, as will best be understood by reference to Figs. 3 and 6.
Formed in the plate I5, lengthwise thereof, is a slot 2!] of uniform width. This slot is formed at regularly spaced intervals therealong with circular enlargements, as at 2|, one of which is at the upper end of the slot. At its lower end, the slot 29 terminates in a circular enlargement 22 that is of substantially greater diameter than the enlargements 2| for a purpose presently explained.
The stop member that is associated with the base plate, is designated in its entirety by reference numeral 25. This comprises a metal block of wedge-like form, provided with a flat inside surface 25a designed to be engaged flatly against the outer surface of the base plate, lengthwise thereof and to be secured in a downwardly pointed position thereon, as will be understood by its showing in Fig. 3.
Fixed in the stop member 25, near its upper or thicker end, and extending inwardly from the flat inner surface 25a thereof, is a securing stud 21, formed with a flat anchoring head 28. The stud 21 is flattened at top and bottom surfaces, as shown best in Fig. 5, wherein the cross sectional view shows it to have a thickness or diameter in the vertical direction that is slightly less than the width of the slot 26, and it has a transverse diameter or thickness greater than lower end enlargement 22 and may be passed therethrough. Also extending from the inner face of the stop member, but near its lower end, is a short stud 30. Thi is of such diameter that it will be received within the slot 20 and the purpose of this stud is to prevent any lateral displacement of the lower end of the stop member from its holding position.
Assuming thedevice to be so constructedit is applied'and used as follows:
First, with both window sashes shifted to closed positions, the base plate I5 is applied lengthwise to one of the vertical stiles of the upper sash with its lower end terminating about at the level of the lower edge of the glass panel in the upper sash, and is secured by applying screws 1! through the holes I6. The anchoring stud cannot be unseated because head 28; cannot bepassed through the slot 20 or any o t e n a gem nt 21- Should the lower sash be raised. or the top sash lowered, the, stop Z5 will wedge against the top rail of the bottom sash, as illustrated in Fig. 3, thus to limit the extent of opening ofthe window in accordance with the position at whiohthe stop has been set.
order that the window may be opened completely, it is necessary first to completely close both sashes, then, to swing the stopmember 2-5; to a horizontal position and shift it along slot 29 to the lower end of the plate l5 and withdraw the anchoring stud 21 from the plate by passing the head 28 outwardly through the lower end enlargement 22 of the slot With the stop removed, the Window sashes are free for up and down adjustment to full extent permitted by the window frame.
With the present device, the extent of opening of a. window may be limited to a few inches, or distances for desired ventilation without making possible the release of the stop and raising of the window by one outside the window.
A feature of importance is the provision of. means. requiring that the windows be entirely closedbefore the stop can be removed for complete opening of; thewindow.
Having thus described my invention, what. I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a plate adapted to be fixed adjacent the path of travel of a slidably mounted window and having a slot formed therein in the direction of window travel; said slot being formed, at intervals therealong, with enlargements, a stop member applied to the outer face of the said Plate a a a ed to be engaged. by th window to limit its opening movement; said stop member having an anchor stud extended inwardly therefrom and through said slot within one of the slot enlargements and a head at the inner end of the stud for engaging the inner face of the plate to retain the stud against withdrawal from the slot, and said stud having a transverse thickness, substantially fitting the slot enlargement to prevent movement of the stop along the plate when in a window holding position, and having a vertical thickness that is lesser than the width or the slot, whereby, upon turning the stop member to a position transversely of the slot, the stud is movable along the. slot, for the. dis: position ofthe stop at, any. selected holding position.
2. A device as recited in claim 1- wherein the stop member is in the form of an elongated wedge, and wherein the. anchor stud extends inwardly from that end portion of greater thick: ness and a short stud extends inwardly from the inner face of the thinner end portion of the stop member into the slot to retain. the. stop against lateral turning: when a window is. engagedagainst the outer surface. of the stop member.
