SAWINGr-IVIACHINE FOR RESAWING BOARDS.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 24,240, dated May 31, 1859.
To all whom 'it may concer/n:
Be it known that I, ANDREW C. Ross, of Almont, in the county of Lapeer and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Machine for Resawing Boards, Blanks, or other Articles; and I do hereby declare that my said invention is fully described and represented in the following specication and accompanying drawings, letters, figures, and references thereof.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings exhibits a top view of my invented resawing machine. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of it. Fig. 3 is a perspective view' of it.
In the said drawings of Figs. l, 2 and 3 A represents the main frame of the machine of which B B is a stationary platform or bed xed on the top part of the main frame. At a suitable distance is placed the upper rotary plane cylinder or cutter C and made to operate the said plane has its journals and is supported in boxes a a. There is an opening transversely ma de 'through the platform B B in which a rotary cutter or plane D is placed below and within the said openings and made to revolve in such manner as to carry its cutters against the underside of the board plank or other article and reduce it or remove the wood therefrom. For impelling the board toward and past the rotary planes or cutters the saws j ointers or matchers and stickers I employ one or more sets of feed rollers E F. The roller E is made so as to freely revolve on its journals while in other respects it is stationary, the other roller Fis not only capable of rotating but. of rising and falling so as to adapt itself to the varying thickness of the board plank or other article for this purpose it is borne down toward the other roller by means of one or more weighted levers and suitable bearing rods such as are in common use for such purpose.
The main driving shaft is placed at G as seen in drawings at one end it has a large pulley, on the center of said shaft there is fixed a large drum around which two endless belts pass, and thence pass around two pulleys c c fixed on the shaft of the upper rotary plane C around said drum two endless crossed belts pass and thence pass around two pulleys CZ d xed on the shaft of the under planing cylinder around said drum pass two endless belts and thence pass around two pulleys e e fixed on the vertical shafts whereon the saws are made to operate, the said vertical shafts having fixed on them two otherpulleys f 7 around each of which one of two endless belts pass and thence pass around one of two pulleys g g iixed on the vertical shafts of the jointers or matchers H I-I. On the shaft of the upper rotary plane C is fixedl a pulley h around which an endless belt is passed and thence passes around a pulley z' on the shaft of the upper sticking cylinder I. On the shaft of the lower rotary plane D is xed a pulley j around which an endless belt passes and thence passes around a pulley la fixed on the shaft of the lower sticking cylinder K by the aforesaid means of pulleys and belts the said upper and lower cylinders the saws the j ointers or matchers, and the upper and lower sticking cylinders the whole being as seen in the drawings and is put in rapid revolution when the main shaft is made to revolve.
On one end of the axle of the lower feed ro-ller a large gear wheel l is fixed the same being made to engage with a toothed'pinion m. Fixed on a transverse horizontal shaft which plays or rotates in boxes and has a pulley a on its end, an endless crossed belt passes around the pulley Z and also' around a pulley fixed on the end of the driving shaft the whole being as seen in the drawings by such means the lower feed roller is revolved when the main shaft is put in rotation. By means of feed rollers E and F the plank is advanced or moved upon the bench B B and under the rotary plane C the said plank by means of pressure rollers being firmly held down by spring bars, said rollers yielding to the variation of thickness of the plank as it passes under them. Over or in the vicinity of the lower rotary plane is arranged transversely a roller O said roller being kept down by spring bars upon the plank while the said plank rests on the bed B B the under surface or part of the board is reduced to parallelism with the upper surface of it which always throughout the operation rests on the bed or platform B B which prevents the board being drawn downward and toward the rotary cutter. At a suitable distance from the said rotary cylinder is placed and made to operate the circular saws K, the said circular saws have their shafts p supported in boxes confined in vertical swinging or adjustable frames R and two horizontal and transverse bars or bridgetrees s the frames being respectively supported in stationary guides or slots in said bars or bridgetrees and fastened on the main frame and so made as to allow of a free horizontal movement either inward or out-ward of the said frames. The distance between the platform and the underside of the saws de-v termines the thickness of a board while in the operation of resawing and for the purpose of resawing a bo-ard orV plank to any desirable thickness as circumstances may require either beveled or parallel the saws may be provided with suitable mechanical contrivances by which' their distance from the platform or bed 4may `be adjusted or regulated. The mode of accomplishing this I have exhibited in the enlarged drawings. It consists in screws t being tappedv into and through the top parts of the flanges a, a of the saws and made to screw against the top of the shafts supporting said saws. The said saws being respectively secured to said shafts by means of a feather or small screw fastened on one side of the ange and so `made as to allow of a free vertical move ment either upward or downward in a slotA or seat made for that purpose insaid vertical shaft. On the opposite side of said flange I use one or more set of punch screws tapped into and through said flange and madeV to screw against said shaft'by such means the said saws are properly arranged andv secured when put in rotation. A horizontal bar or separator L is arranged with its lower surface Va little lower than Athe lower surface of the circle of rovolution of the cutting edge of the circular saws. The said bar is arranged in the rear of said saws and across the machine and is fastened firmly at its ends by screws to spring bars.
lboards or plank and bringing The board as it advances beyond the saws one part passes between the bed and rest bar` and the other part above the said rest bar and the said board or plank, is kept firmly down to the bed and up to the guide by means of said bar while in the operation of resawing thereby giving it a perfect thick-` ness throughout its length.
At a suitable distance from the saws is placed the jointers or matchers I I these` are placed there fo-r the purpose of ointing them to a perfect breadth throughout their length. And further for the purpose of tonguing and grooving ooring ceiling &c. The upper and lower sticking cylinders I-I are placed at a suitable distance from the jointers and may be used one or both of them as circumstances may require, for the purpose of beading sticking moldings or `finishing strips for gothic houses.
In arranging the saws for resawing I employ two -or more saws by this means I am enabled to use a much thinner saw and save material and power to a great extent.
I do not claim the employment in one machine `of rotary planers, :tonguing, grooving and Arabbeting devices, and sticking or bead ing devices, but
