Description

April 15, 1947. CROWDER 2,418,870
FOLDING GARMENT HANGER Filed April 26, 1946 INVENTQR r f v n v WITNESS ATTORNEYS Patenteci Apr. 15, 1947 STATES P'rE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to a folding garment hanger which will permit a dress or similar garment to be removed therefrom without unbuttoning the dress.
An object of this invention is to provide a hanger which may be collapsed for insertion into or removal from a garment; one on which a garment can be easily and quickly hung or from which it can be removed regardless of whether the hanger is removed from the support thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hanger that is durable in use, efficient in operation and can be inexpensive1y manufactured.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary front view thereof;
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a top plan view;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary bottom plan view;
Figure 6 is a sectional view in folded position;
Figure '7 is a detailed view of the latch;
Figure 8 is a modified form of the invention;
Figure 9 is a sectional view on the line 99 of Figure 8;
Figure 10 is the form shown in Figure 8 in folded position.
Referring more in detail to the drawing the reference numeral 28 designates the garment hanger which can be made of sheet metal, plastic, compressed paper or other similar materials.
The hanger 28 comprises arms 22 and 24 respectively and arm 22 has the upstanding neck portion 26 and arm 24 has the upstanding hollow hook portion 28 with the hook 30 on the free end thereof.
The arm 24 is provided with the projection 32 which enters the neck portion 26 and a pivot pin 84 in the neck portion and projection pivotally connect the two arms.
A curved fiat spring 36 is positioned between the projection 32 and hook portion 28 and retained at one end by the fastener 38 the projection being secured to the arm 24 by fasteners 48 and the other end of the spring is retained in neck portion 26 by the keeper 42 secured to the neck portion by fasteners 44.
The spring tends to force the arms in closed position as shown in Figure 6 and the arms are retained in supporting position as shown in Figure 1 by means of the latch 48 pivoted at 48 to the hook portion and engaged in the bifurcated upper end 50 of the neck portion.
The arms at their lower ends are provided with pivot pins 52 on which the links 54 are mounted by means of elongated slots 58 and the other ends of the links are pivoted at 58.
In Figures 8, 9 and 10 the hanger 68 comprises arms 62 and 84 and the arm 64 has the projection or tongue 66 formed integral therewith and with the hook portion 68 and the neck portion 10 on arm 82 is bifurcated at 12 to engage the pro- J'ection 86 and a pivot pin 14 pivotally connects the arms. The leaf spring 16 is connected at 18 to the projection 66 and extends upwardly into the neck portion 70 and the hook portion is provided with the hook and a pivotal link 82 which engages the neck portion and retains the arms in open position against the tension of the spring 16.
Brackets 84 are secured to the lower ends of the arms by fasteners 88 and links 88 are pivoted at one end at 90 to the bracket, at the other end to each other at 92.
It will be seen that both sets of links are provided with cutouts 94 to receive garment clamps 96 for hanging skirts or trousers to the links.
In Figures 1 to 7 the arms are hollow and the links fold within the arms as shown in Figure 6, but in Figures 8, 9 and 10, the arm 62 is provided with a cutout or cavity 98 to receive the arms as shown in Figure 10.
When it is desired to remove a garment from the hanger the operator lifts the pivoted latch and the spring will force the arms into engagement. Thus the garment can be removed without unbuttoning thereof.
When it is desired to hang a garment on the hanger, the hanger is inserted through the neck of the garment, the arms forced outward and the latch engaged and the hanger is ready for use.
It is believed that the above description when taken in conjunction with the drawings will clearly explain the operation and construction of the invention and it is to be understood that changes in the minor details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to providing they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a pair of pivoted arms, one of said arms being provided with a neck portion and the other of said arms being provided with a hook portion means on said hook portion adapted to enter said neck portion whereby said arms are pivotally connected together, spring means secured to said hook portion at one end and engaging the neck portion at the other end for forcing said arms into folded engagement with each other and means for retaining said arms in extended position.
2. The invention as in claim 1 wherein links pivoted to each other and to the ends of the arms are receivable in said arms when said arms are in folded engagement with each other.
3. The invention as in claim 1 wherein the 4 means for pivoting said arms is formed integral with said hook portion and. said neck portion is shaped to conform to the contour of said pivoting means.
