INVENTOR WITNESSES ATTORNEYS N-PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGMPHER, WASHINGTON D O bar.
PATENT OF ICE.
MICHAEL TRUBY, OF ELKHART, INDIANA.
COMBINED DOOR-B,ELL AND ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,203, dated April 12, 1881. Application filed December 11, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, MICHAEL TRUBY, of Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined Alarms and Door- Bells; and I do hereby declare that the fol lowing isv afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is an end View, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a plan "iew, partly in section. Figs. 3 and 4 are details.
This invention relates to bells for use at doors, and also in the nature of alarms.
The invention consists in the construction he'renat'ter described.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a door, to which is attached, upon the inside, an ordinary lock, B,-having the handle 0 projecting through it.
D is a ring, held to handle 0 by the screws a, and having extending to one side a finger, E, having an eye, I).
F is an alarm arranged upon door A in proximity to lockB.
G is the sounder, whose boss 9 is internally screw-threaded for the reception of the screwpost H, made fast to a plate, I, secured to the door. Journaled upon post H, and held by pin 0, is a half-discous plate, K, through whose hub d said post H passes. At one end, 0, of said plate is located a lug, f, from'which extends a. wire, L, connecting by hook it with eye 1) on finger E.
Surrounding hub d is a spiral spring, M, one end of which is held fast to plate K, and the other end bears against a pin, N, projecting upward from plate I, plate K having a notch, l, fitting said pin.
Projecting from plate I, in the same direction as, but upon the opposite edge from, lug f, is apin, m, which passes through the hub n of a curved bar, P, which curves around toward hub d of plate I. I
Projecting outward from the end p of bar P is a lug, 10, whose face 19 has the curve of said Extending from plate I, so as to come between hub d and lug p, is a stud, r.
R is a stud rising from extension S of plate I, and carrying at its top the wire rod T, which is sleeved upon said stud by a tube, V. The smaller end 8 of this rod '1 ends in a turneddown lug, 8, just in front of curved lug 19. Its other and longer end, 8 being bent around, bears against a pin, W, and carries at its extremity the striker Surrounding tubeVis a spring, Y, one end bearing against pin W, the other bent around and bearing against end 8 of rod T.
Z is a plate on the outside of the door, carrying afiat stud, Z. Projecting through this plate and a slot in the door is a pivoted lever, Z having the thumb-piece Z and its inner end, Z resting against lug f of plate I upon the side away from the door-handle.
Any one opening the door by the handle O through wire L operates plate I, and thereby pulls bar P, and, causing its lugp to strike lug s, operates to move the striker X from the sounder. The spring M, surrounding the hub n of curved barP, holds thelugp firmly against lug s, and, preventing it from slipping olf, in-
sures correct action. As said lug 12 passes lug s, the spring Y throws striker X against the sounder-G and gives an alarm. The stud r, by its presence between lug p and hub (Z, prevents lugp from being forced too far forward against spring M. Now, as the bandle O is released, plate 1 is thrown back by spring M, carrying bar P, and lug p slides around lug 8, ready for another stroke.
To operate the alarm as a bell from the outside, the lever Z is moved so as to strike lug j, which operates the alarm, as already described.
What I claim is- 1. The combination of handle 0, plate K, journaled upon post H, and having lugf and pin 1):, bar P, having lugp, wire rod T, having lug s, and carrying the striker X, sounder G, and means for connecting handle (J and plate K.
The alarm, substantially as described, connected to the door-handle, as set forth, in combination with a lever pivoted in a slot in the door and adapted to operate said alarm, whereby the alarm can be operated both by the door-handle and the lever.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
MICHAEL TRUBY. Witnesses:
ALEXANDER Do'rsoN, JOHN LESHER.
