- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB BENEDICT, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOE OF ONE-HALF TO THE EMPIRE WRINGER COMPANY, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
WASH-BENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,078, dated April 12, 1881.
Application filed December 18, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB BENEDICT, of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wash-Benches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the iiivention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany- Figs. 7 and 8 are perspective views of the clamping-plates, and Fig. 9 shows detail views of one of the outer legs and side pieces with their connecting-clamp.
The object of my inventionis to provide simple, durable, and effective clampingdevices or fastenings for the frame of a folding washbench and wringer and the invention consists in a socketed locking-clamp, andin other details of construction, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
A represents one of the wringer-standards, which are connected by the cross-pieces a a and a. On the inner side of each standard is 3 5 a short semicircular trough, B, that is arranged below the ends of the wringer-rolls B B, to prevent the water from dripping to the floor and direct it to the water-board O, that is supported on the wire bracket 0 and on one 0 0f the pins 0 c. This water-board is reversible, so as to incline to either side, as required, and is held in place by the projecting ends of the cross-piece c, which rests against the sides of the wringer-standards.
The lower end of each standard A is recessed to fit in the central socket of the metallic clamp D. (Shown in Figs. 2 and 7.) This clamp is provided with projecting flanges forming five sockets, the central one, d, being for thelowerrecessed end of the wringer-standard,
and having formed just above it a transverse ridge or tongue, 01, that enters a corresponding slot, b, in the outer side of the standard A, and thus assists in holding it in place.
The central or stationary legs, E E, are formed to fit into the sockets c c, and are provided with grooves e e, that receive the corresponding tongues e c in the lower edge of said sockets. They are also further secured by means of the bolts 6 The side pieces, F F, forming the table or bench-frame, are pivoted in the outer sockets, f f, of the clamp D, and are each provided on one side at the inner end with an elongated slot, f, that receives the pinf andon the under surface with a transverse slot or groove, f thatengages with the tongue f at the outer edge of the socket f.
To the outer end of the side piece, F, is secured a metallic clamp or socket, G, provided at the top with upward-projecting edges 9 g, that clasp the side of the piece F, and on its inner side with a rim, g, that serves to prevent the pivoted legsHfroin slipping inward when the bench is unfolded for use. The legs H are sufficiently beveled at each end so as to incline outward when the bench. is unfolded, and at the same time rest firmly and evenly on the floor and against the-under surface of the side pieces, F F. Each of these legs is provided with an elongated slot, h, that receives a bolt, h, passing through the socket Gr. They are also connected with those on the opposite side by the braces k On the inner side of each standard A, and connecting the stationary legs E E, to which it is secured by means of the bolts cf, is arranged the metallic clainp I. (Shown inFigs.
1 and 8.) This clampis provided with aflanged socket, t, having on each side and at the bottom a ridge or tongue, 43, that enters a groove,
70, in the ends of the girt K, which rests in the sockets 't' t and extends between the two sides of the bench. The back of the plate I when in position forms the inner sides of the sockets 5 in the plate D, and the two plates clamp the standards A and legs E firmly together.
When the side pieces, F, and pivoted legs H are folded up against the standards A, as shown in Fig. 2, the inner orlowerend of each side piece, F, presses inwardly against the projecting flange that forms one side of the socket in the end of the plate D, and being also held by the pivot or pin f no other fastenin gs are required. The usual necessity of employin g hooks or equivalent fastenin gs to hold the pivotedparts of the bench in position when folded is thus obviated.
In order to fold or unfold the frame itis only necessary to raise and draw the side pieces, F, slightly upward and outward, so as to cause the slot f to move on the pin f By means of the metallic clamping-plates D and I and the sockets G, the standards, side pieces, and legs of the wash-bench are firmly united in such a manner that they may be readily detached from each other and from the girt K whenever desired. The various parts may thus be closely packed, so as to occupy but a small space.
The bench-frame when unfolded for use is rigidly braced, and affords a firm support for use as a wash-bench and wringer.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination, with the standards A, legs E, pivoted side pieces, F, and legs H, of the metallic clamping-plate D, having sockets d e f and pivots f substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the socketed clamping-plates D I, pivoted side pieces, I sockets G, and legs H, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of the standards A A, legs E E, outer clamping-plate, D, having sockets 01 cf, inner clamping-plate, I, having tongued socket i, and the eross-girt K, resting in the sockets t and connecting the opposite sides of the bench, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own 1 have hereto affixed my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
JACOB BENEDICT.
