3 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in baby seats.
The object of the invention is to provide a small travelling case capable of being easily converted into a babys seat.
The invention contemplates a travelling case having component parts which are adapted for conversion into a baby seat and tray, as will be more fully described in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a front elevational view of the invention extended as a seat.
Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Figure 1.
Fig. 4 is a similar sectional view with the parts assembled to form a travelling case.
Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view showing the method of slidably securing the cover to the side walls.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
The numeral l indicates generally a container having a bottom wall 2, side walls 3, a rear wall 4, a front panel 5 and a cover 6. The front panel 5 is hingedly connected to the bottom wall as at 8 and extending transversely of the inner face of the said front panel 5 is a rail 9 adapted to serve as a foot rest when the container l is in use as a seat. A transverse rod I2 is secured to the side walls 3, the said rod being connected to the front panel 5 by a centrally disposed strap M, which strap is adapted to retain the front panel 5 in leg supporting position. A
catch or other appropriate fastening device It. see Figure 4, secured to the inner edge of the rod l2, and having its keeper secured to the inner edge of the rail 9, is adapted to retain the front panel 5 in closed position. The side walls 3 are each provided with an inverted L-shaped groove I8 consisting of a short horizontal groove 19 and a substantially vertical groove 20. Extending from the side edges of the cover 6, at a point adjacent its rear edge, is a pin 2| which rides in the horizontal grooves l9 when the cover 6 is in horizontal position and in the vertical grooves 20 when the said cover is in use as a backrest.
Pivotally mounted on pins 22 carried by the side walls (one only shown) and disposed between :the side walls 3 is a shelf 24 having its free edge supported by stops 25 secured to the rear wall 4, the said shelf having its lower surface recessed as at 28 to form a tray when swung to the fully extended position. One of the side walls 3 is provided with a centrally disposed handle 28.
If required, a hasp 30 and staple 33 can be secured to the front edge of the cover 6 and the upper edge of the panel 5 respectively, for the purpose of safeguarding the contents of the container I.
When it is desired to convert the travelling case into a baby seat, it is merely necessary to place the case upon a suitable support and swing the cover 6 to the rear, so that the contents can be removed. The catch I6 is then released and the front panel 5 allowed to swing to the full extent of the strap M, i. e. in leg supporting position. The shelf 24 is then swung over onto the rod l2 and the cover 6 is moved forwardly so that the pins 2! traverse the length of the horizontal arms 19 and enter the substantially vertical arms 20, whereupon the said cover is lowered into contact with the bottom wall 2 and placed in reclining abutment with the stops 25. A baby placed in the seat with its legs on opposite sides of the strap I4 is prevented from sliding out under the tray 24 or the rod [2.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. A baby seat comprising a case having a bottom Wall, said bottom wall being adapted for use as a seat, side and end walls and a cover, one end wall being hingedly connected to the bottom wall to form a leg rest when in open position, and the cover being movably mounted for alternate placement from cover position to a substantially vertical back forming position remote from the hinged end wall, said cover having hinge pins at the end remote from the hinged end wall, said side walls having opposing substantially vertical slots, said hinge pins being mounted for sliding movement in said slots to dispose the cover between said side Walls to form a seat back.
2. A baby seat comprising a case having a bottom wall, said bottom wall being adapted for use as a seat, side and end walls and a cover, one end wall being hingedly connected to the bottom wall and the cover being movably mounted for alternate placement from cover position to a substantially vertical back forming position remote from the hinged end wall, said hinged end wall being adapted when in open position to serve as a leg rest, means for supporting said hinged end wall when in open position, a pair of arms pivotally mounted to the side walls adjacent their upper end, a tray supported upon said arms, a member extending between the side walls forming a partial support for the arms and tray adjacent the hinged end wa1l,said tray forming a horizontal division for the case and adapted to be swung outwardly from said case to form a table for the device when opened for use as a baby seat.
3. A baby seat comprising a rectangular case having a bottom wall, said bottom wall being adapted for use as a seat, two side walls and an end wall secured thereto, an end wall having a foot rest extending transversely thereof, said end wall being hingedly connected to the bottom wall, said end wall being adapted to swing downward to form a leg rest, means to support said leg rest,
a cover connected to said case, means for anchoring the cover to the fixed end wall when said cover is in closed position, means extending between the side walls for supporting the cover when in closed position, and means for securing 10 Number 4 the cover and the hinged end wall in closed position.
