Description

Aug. 30, 1949. c. DODEGGE' SLICER WITH ADJUSTABLE BLADE I Filed Sept. 27, 1946 I JNVENTOR.
('qri @Odjg BY [UNITED s'r T Patented Aug. 3Q, 1949 SLICER WITH ADJUSTABLE BLADE V Carl Dodegge, Maywood, Ill. 7 Application September 27, 1946, Serial No. 699,895
This invention relates ticularly to slicers having a blade which is adjustable to control the thickness of the slice to be cut.
It is the primary object of my invention to construct a slicer which is well adapted for slicing various articles such as, among other things, fruits, vegetables, or cheese, and which has an adjustable slicer blade associated therewith in such a manner that it may easily be set so as to control the thickness of the slices to be cut. 'Various types of slicers have been heretofore known to the art. However, such slicers have heretofore had several inherent disadvantages such as, for example, that they were relatively complicated in construction, and diflicult to operate. It is an object of my invention to provide a slicer which is simple both in construction and operation, and which may be economically manufactured.
Another common disadvantage in slicers heretofore known to the art has been that the thickness of the slice to be cut was controlled by varying the angle at which the slicer blade was set, and that in many instances the slicer would bind during a slicing operation. It is an object of my invention to construct a slicer whereinthe slicer blade is associated therewith in such a manner that during adjustment thereof the same angular relationship is maintained between the slicer blade and the body of the slicer.
A further object of my invention is to construct a slicer which is sturdy and reliable in operation and wherein the blade thereof may be quickly and easily moved to a selected cutting position and firmly secured therein.
Other and further objects of the present invention will be apparent from the following description and claim and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing which, by way of illustration, shows a preferred embodiment of the present invention and the principle thereof and what I now consider to be the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle. Other embodiments of the invention embodying the same or equivalent principle may be used and structural changes may be made as desired by those skilled in the art without departing from the present invention and the purview of the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a slicer embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the slicer shown in Fig. 1;
1 Claim.- (01. 146-171) to slicers, and morepar- Q Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 3-3 in Fig. l and Fig. 4 is a sectional View taken substantially along the line 4-4 inFig. 1.
I For purposes of illustration, my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings as embodied in a slicer It comprising in general, a base l2, an adjustable slicer-blade supporting "unit l4 and handles lfiand ll.
which 'a slicer-blade 26, having a cutting edge 26a, is connected by screws 2! or other suitable means. The side members 23 and 24 are spaced apart but are substantially parallel to each other and, when the slicer-blade supporting unit i4 is 'attachedtto the base 12, lie inwardly of, but adjacent to the side walls i9 and 23, respectively,
and support the slicer-blade 26 in a substantially horizontal position with the cutting edge 26a thereof positioned adjacent to the table top 2|.
.-. Substantially parallel elongated slots29 and 30 are formed in each of the side members 23 and 24. A pin 3| extends through the side wall 19 of the base unit l2 and through the slot 39 in the side member 23, the ends of the pin 3| being flattened or otherwise enlarged sufliciently to retain it in position so as to hold the side wall l9 and the side member 23 together. In a similar manner the side wall 20 and the side member 24 are fastened together by a pin 32 which extends through the side wall 20 and the slot 30 formed in the side member 24.
A bolt 34 having an enlarged head, forming a knurled knob 35, extends through the side walls l9 and 20 of the base unit l2 and through the slots 29 formed in the side members 23 and 24 of the slicer-blade supporting unit M. A nut 31 is threaded onto the other end of the bolt 34, opposite the knurled knob 35, and a spacer 38 is loosely mounted on the bolt 34 between the side members 23 and 24. The end portions of the spacer 38 extend across the slots 29 in the side members 23 and 24 and provide abutments against which the side members 23 and 24 are pressed when the nut 38 is tightened on the bolt 34, the side member 23 being pressed against the side wall l9 between one end of the spacer 38 and the knurled knob 35, and the other side member 3 21 being pressed against the side wall 20 between the other end portion of the abutment 3 8 and the nut 31', when the nut 31 is tightened on the bolt 34.
The substantially U-shaped handles l6 and I1 are attached to the base l2 by any suitable means such as welding, and project therefrom so that they may be easily gripped by the operator during operation of my novel slicer.
In the-operation of my novel sliderlfij th op 10 erator grasps the vegetable or other article to be sliced in one hand and, while holding the slicer In by grasping either the handle 16 or the handle 2| a distance corresponding to the thickness of the slice it is desired to out.
The slicer-blade 26 may be adjusted relative to 20 the :table top 2| to the properposition corresponding to the thickness *of'islice which it is 'desired to cutby turning the knurled knob 35 iii-the proper direction so as to unscrewthe bolt'fl from may easily hold during a slicing operation, and also, that I have provided a slicer which may be easily adjusted by a simple operation to cut a slice of the desired thickness from an article which is reciprocated back and forth on the table top 2| by the operator.
Hence, while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that these are capable of variaticn 'and modification and I therefore do not wish tobe liniitd'to'the precisenetails' setforth, but desire to avail myself of such changes and alterations as fall within the purview of the follow- I claim: A slieer comprising two substantially vertically extending sidewalls, a substantially horizontally extending table top attached to said side walls and adalpted to support an article to be sliced, two substantially vertically extending side memberspeaoh-mf said-wide -.members ehalvi-ngsa 'iSlOt I formed therein-at an angle to =thexhorizontal and 1thevertieal; means for: releasably .securingsaid side members to said side walls, said means inthe nut 31 and thereby 'loosen'the'engagemerit of 'zcludinga1 bolt extendingtthrcugh saidiside walls the side wall 19 with the side member 23-, and-the engagement of side wall with the side member 24; and then sliding 'theslicer-blade supporting unit M on the bolt 34 and the pins 3| and 32 to and *said- :slots-dn said sid':mem'bers,: saidside members being-slidable omsaid bolt. longitudinal ly ohsaid'slots to iadjustedzposition relative to said sid wallsnwhen 2 said-means is released new sethe proper position so as to place the slicer-blade 1 curingmeiationzwith respect to saidzside members,

From the foregoing it willbenot'ed that when the slicer-blade 26 adjusted irel-a'tive m fsthe table top z it moves not only in'aivertical direction 'ther'etd but also in a longitddinal'direcifion.
This is desirable so that the space-betweenathe cutting edge 26a of the slicer bladeifi and the adjacent edge portion of the tabl'eztopzz 1: 1 ways considerably 'larger'than the thickness of the slice which the cutter=blaide -23 is set'tc cut so -th'at binding of the slice'cutdoes-nofloccur I betweenthe cutter blade 26 and-the table tdp ll. Also it will be seen from the foregoing that l have provided a novel slicei -which the operator and cam elongated l-slicer blade attached .xtowand car iied by said side memberswin parallel relation to said-table 330p. in both longitudinalandtrans verse-directions.-
