UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL WHINERY, OF WHEELERS STATION, ALABAMA.
BALANCED SLIDE-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,725, dated September 27, 1881.
' Application'filcd April 2, 1881. (ModeL) I 1" all whom it may concern Be it known that I, S. WHINERY, of Wheelers Station, Lawrence county, Alabama, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Balanced Slide-Valves,of which the following 'is a specification.
, scribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a horizontal section of a steam-chest and valve constructed inaccordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation, partially sectional,of the frame and flexible diaphragm constituting the essential feature of my improvement.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the steam-chest, having its side walls formed with steam-ports a and exhaust-ports b.
c c are two slide-valves, of ordinary form, seated on the sides of chest A, in connection with the ports therein.
d is a rectangular frame, covered by flexible diaphragms cc, of sheet-brass or other suitable material, to form a chamber that is between the valves 00. The diaphragms are connected to the valves by screws or rivets, and the frame d is formed at its ends with yokes or flanges f, that project upon the ends of the valves, so that these parts are held and move together by the operation of the valve-stem g, which is connected with one of the flanges f. The diaphragms e 6 may be corrugated to render them more flexible, and they may be made sufficiently stiff to retain the valves 0 0 against their seats, and thus compensate Wear. It will be seen that the diaphragms project at the endsof the valves, so that the pressure upon thediaphragms, tending to collapse the chamber, nearly balances the pressure of the valves outward. Thevalves are centrally apertured in line with the exhaustports I), as shown at h, and the diaphragms have apertures coincident thereto, so that there is a free passage for exhaust-steam through the valves and the chamber. These passages are provided so that an exhaust-pipe from each side of the steam-chest shall not be required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The slide-valve consisting of twin valves 0 c and frame d, fitted withflexible diaphragms e c, said diaphragms connecting the frame with the valves, combined with a steam-chainber havingsteam and exhaust ports formed in its sides, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a double-seated valve formed by two separated partitions, of the flexible diaphragms e, projecting at the ends of the valve and closed to form a steamtight chamber, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
SAMUEL WHINERY.
