ATTEI RN EYE Patented June 21, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WALLPAPER TRIMMER Henry Morton Stanley, Buhl, Minn.
Application December 12, 1946, Serial No. 715,751
4 Claims. 1
This invention relates to improvements in devices for trimming papers, and more particularly to the provision of a device especially adapted for trimming wall paper and the like.
It is an object of the invention to provide a wall paper trimmer having means to hold the paper on a board and prevent it from piling up ahead of a cutting knife. The device is designed to use a razor blade as a cutting knife, and is provided with a toothed wheel which moves in advance of the cutting blade.
A further object is to provide a wall paper trimming device which can be manufactured at a low cost and which has relatively few parts to get out of order. The device requires no grooved guide for aiding the cutting operation as has been necessary with paper trimmer heretofore employed.
These and other objects are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a paper trimmer embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a top view of the trimmer.
Fig. 3 is a view of the trimmer with a cover removed so that a razor blade can be mounted therein.
Fig. 4 is a view of a cover.
Fig. 5 is an end view of the cover.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
Figs. 7 and 7a are side and end views respectively of a rocker used in the device.
Figs. 8 and 8a are side and end views respectively of a toothed wheel used in the device.
Fig. 9 is a view of a spring used in the device.
Referring to the drawings, the paper trimming device is shown to comprise a handle 1, to which is attached a head 2 having a recess 3 with an elongated portion 6 adapted to receive the head i of a razor blade 8. The head 2 has a pair of guide pins 4 and a countersunk hole for a screw, the hole being designated by the numeral 5.
Attached to the head 2 by means of a screw 9 and nut is a cover plate It having holes I I to receive the guide posts I, the plate In having a recess corresponding to the recess 3. Pivotally connected to the plate Ill at l2 below the downward facing shoulder Illa on the cover plate I is a rocker 13 which has rotatably mounted thereon atoothed wheel l4. The plate has an angularly cut portion l in which is positioned a spring it which tends to urge the rocker down.
In operation, the wall paper is placed on a sheet of paste board and the tool is placed against a straight edge of some kind. The tool is drawn towards the operator so that the toothed wheel I 4 moves ahead of the cutting end of blade 8, thus preventing the paper from piling up.
The device is easy to assemble as it requires only the screw 9 and nut, and obviously it can be manufactured at a low cost thus making it readily available to a large class of users.
The above description is to be considered as illustrative and not limitative of the invention, of which modifications can be made without departing from the spirit and scope as denoted by the appended claims.
The invention having been described, what is claimed is:
1. In a paper trimming device, a handle, a head attached to the handle and having a recess adapted to receive a razor blade, a cover plate attached to the head, a rocker pivoted on the plate, a toothed wheel rotatably mounted on the rocker, and a spring bearing against the rocker.
2. In a paper trimming device, a handle, a head attached to the handle and having a recess adapted to receive a razor blade, a cover plate attached to the head, a rocker pivoted on the plate, a toothed wheel rotatably mounted on the rocker, said cover plate having a cut-out portion, and a spring positioned in the cut-out portion and acting on the rocker.
3. In a paper trimming device, a handle, a head attached to the handle, means on the head to hold a razor blade, a cover plate attached to the head, a toothed wheel rotatably mounted on the plate, and means to urge the wheel down when cutting paper.
4. In a paper trimming device, a handle, a head attached to the handle and having a recess adapted to receive a razor blade, guide posts on the head, a cover plate attached to the head and having holes to receive the guide posts, a wheel rotatably mounted on the cover plate, and spring means to urge the wheel down when cutting paper.
