7 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in automatic manure conveyors for barns or stables.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved automatic manure conveyor for barns or stables including a sloping gutter formed in the barn or stable floor to the rear of the usual cow stanchions, whereby the manure may be readily conveyed by an endless chain conveyor built in said gutter and dumped into a carrier positioned in a pit formed at the end of the barn or stable, and said carrier, after being filled, being adapted to be elevated from said pit and moved along an overhead trackway to a manure dump pile in the barn yard.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved built-in manure collecting gutter construction in a barn or stable, together with an endless conveyor mechanism disposed therein being operable by an electric motor and pump jack in connection with a ratchet wheel and cooperating alternately operated pivoted dogs or pawls, whereby the manure swept into the gutter will be automatically removed therefrom into a carrier and moved to a manure dump pile in the barnyard at a point remote from the barn or stable.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved, self-draining gutter and automatic manure conveyor construction for a barn or stable which will be highly efiicient in operation, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, 7
Figure 1 is a plan view partly in section of a barn or stable equipped with the improved automatic manure conveyor;
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through a barn or stable showing the automatic manure conveyor built therein and the carrier and overhead trackway associated with the pit formed at the end of said barn or stable;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the electric motor driven pump jack and pawl and ratchet mechanism employed for operating the automatic manure conveyor.
Like characters of reference are used through out the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is shown a barn or stable having side and end walls I and 2 respectively, and an opening or doorway 3 through one end thereof, through which the auto matic manure conveyor, later to be described, will extend. v
A concrete pit 4 will be formed at theen'd of the barn or stable directly below the discharge end of said automatic manure conveyor.
A plurality of stanchions 5 will be built into the ham or stable, and a concrete floor 6 will be,

An improved form of gutter construction generally denoted by the reference numeral 1 will be disposed longitudinally of the barn or stablein the floor 6, and'comprises oppositely disposed side walls 8 of concrete and a sloping concrete bottom 9 being lower at the outlet end of the gutter than at the opposite end, and a pair of oppositely disposed bearing shoulders ill and H are provided at the sides of said gutter bottom 9 for supporting the lower reach of the chain conveyor later to be described.
Opposed bearing shoulders I2 and. 13 will be formed adjacent the shoulders l0 and Il upon a higher level, and will support the thick concrete blocks M which form a partition between the upper and lower levels of said gutter Disposed upon the concrete blocks I 4- are the vertically extending trough or gutter side wall blocks I5 which are cemented in place and take care of the side thrust of the endless automatic manure conveyor later to be described.
A transverse shaft i6 is mounted for rotation in the bearings I! at the discharge end of the manure trough or gutter 1, and a transverse shaft i8 is also rotatably mounted and disposed at the inner end of said trough or gutter 1, being $11131 ported in the bearings l9 attached to the adjust.- able bolts 20 which extend through an end 2 of the barn or stable, and are secured by means of the nuts 20. 1
Endless conveyor chains or belts 2| and 22 are supported upon sprockets 23 and 24 secured respectively to the transverse shafts i6 and i8, and transversely extending upstanding cross bars 25 are connected between every sixth link of the conveyor chains 2| and 22.
The cross bars 25 and conveyor chains 2! and 22 will drag along the upper portion of the gutter or trough 1 upon the upper surfaces of the heavy partition or bearing blocks M with the side wall blocks l5 limiting the outward or sidewise movement of the conveyor. The chains 2! and 22, as theypass through the lower portion of the gutter or trough 1, run' along the opposite bearing shoulders l and II with the cross bars extending below and into the intermediate depressed gutter bottom 9.
The conveyor will extend through the doorway or opening 3 in the end wall 2 to overlie the elongated concrete pit 4 formed at the end of the barn or stable.
A carrier or receptacle 26 having handles 21 will be disposable: in: the pit hand; will: be connected with. the chains. 28 extending. up to the; overhead crane 29 which is mounted upon the wheel-supported frame 30 upon the overheads track 3| supported upon the verticalsupporting standards 32 arranged in spaced relation and leading to any desired portionof therbarnyardz adjacent a manure dump pile (not shown), whereby, when the carrier 26 has-been filled with manure, the crane 29 will elevate the same from the pit 4 by means of the gear mechanism 33 and operating chain. 3.4. The. carrier 26 and. the traveling. crane. 29. then will be either manually or mechanicallypropelled. alongthe, overhead trackway 3JI until it. reaches the manure dump and the carrier is emptied; The carrier 26'andcrane 23 isthen runback. to a position to. overlie the pit. 4', and the carrier. is again. disposed within said'pit 42, a
The. driving mechanism for the automatic manure conveyor includes an enclosed. pump jack. mechanism 35 which will be positionediwithinthe barn or, stable. adjacent the discharge end oi the automatic manure conveyor, saidpumpjackhaving means. for supporting, an electric motor 36' whosev pulley 3'! will be connectedbymeans of the belt 38; with the large, pulley wheel 39' on said pump jack 35. for. operating, the same when. the, motor 36' is energi'zedby electricity fromany suitable source of. electric current supp (not shown);.
The pump jack 35 includes the usual gearing or gear reduction mechanism (not shown) which is connectedgby the pivotediarmdli for oscillating movement in anupwardand' downward direction. Aconnecting bar. 41' is pivotally connected to. the outer end oi thearm All and' is connected at, itsupper' end with. an oilset pump, handle bar 42. formed with oppositely extending. terminal arms 43 and M1 The conveyorshait ill at the outer end'of the conveyor is. extended and;supports.-the to'othed'v ratchet wheel 45 thereon. A link, 4'5... is. pivotally connected" at, its opposite. ends withthe. inner end of the arm 41' and? with the, shaft l5; Angularly disposed, depending. ratchet operating levers 41" and 48 are pivoted atv Mltothe outer end. ofjthe arm 44 and arepivotallyjconnected at their lower ends to the angularly disposed, upwardly extending ratchet operating levers. 5,0 and. 51... whose lower; ends. are pivotall'y supported". upon the" conveyor shaft" I 6.
Cippositely disposed dogs or pawls 52; and. 53 are pivotally supported at the junctions of said levers fl and 48;, and; the levers an-d' 51', and are adapted to alternately engage. the teeth on theratchet wheel Alias the pump jack is operated. the electricmotor 36; whereby the automatic manure conveyor will be. continuously operated when the electric motor'35 isin operation.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that an automatic manure conveyor of the herelnbefore described. construction having. an outwardly sloping bottomand upper surface. has been, devised and. provided for. efil'ciently and. efi'ectiyely removingmanure froma barn or. stable, and. in which. construction the. operation, will be entirely automatic.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
