Doon GUARD Filed March '7, 1947 l Patented Nov. 39,1948
UNITED sTATEs NT OFFICE My present invention relates to anl improvementv in door guards, andE has for an object the provision ofa burglarproof-'do'or guard embodying meansffor removably-attaching the same to the door when it is desired to usethe guard, and which when so attached. shall be:l effective for preventing entryinto the room:
A further objectl of my invention is to provide a doorfguard' embodying an extensible gate slidajbly secured! aty one endto'a pluralityof frods or the like, and to the other end to the door knob handle,l whereby; when-thedoor is opened the'gate isf-extendedv and slides onfthe rods to aposition covering-the opening between the free edge of the door and the door frame. thereby to make the doorwayy burglar vprooicv even `through the door is partiallyopen'.
A'.- further object is 'toprovi'de an overhead securingdevice f'or preventing entry by a person over the top of the door or extensible gate, and meansassociated with the-extensible -gate and the overhead guard whereby the latter is placed in operative position automatically upon opening ofthe-door.
'Apparatus embodying features of my inventionis illustrated in theaccompanying drawing forming a part of this application in which,
Fig. 1 is a somewhat diagrammatic perspective View of my-improvedxguard'y appliedito a door and showing the door partially open and'theiextensible gate partly withdrawn from its. storage cabinet;
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional' view taken on line II-IIi of Fig. 1;
` Fig.. 3l isl a. detail sectional view-` taken ion line III-'IIIloffFig2 Fig. 4 is=. a fragmentary View of the door show.- ingrthemanner of connecting my improved'guard to the door knob handle;
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken on line V-V of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail view of the eye bolt for connecting the overhead guard member with the extensible gate.
Referring now to the drawing for a better understanding of my invention, I show in Fig. l a door II! mounted in the usual door opening Il on hinges I2 and provided with a door knob and handle I3 therefor.
Referring more particularly to Figs. l and 2, my
improved guard comprises an extensible gate comprising an outer vertical member I4, an inner vertical member I6, and intermediate vertical members Il and I8. Each of the members I6 to I8 inclusive may be formed of a pair of small channels secured together back to back in any lo i 4 claims. (ci. nso-s2.)
The member t6 atithe'inner end'of the gategiis slidably supported: by means' of U bolts.i2 9`; fitting s, about a. plurality offhorizontally disposed. rods 28.
The U boltsy 28: are` :considerably larger' than the rods128; and, as bestk shown in Fig.; 2 are bent. slightly to permit'. pivotal movement of the entire guard.Z about the rods 28. While the rods may be secured invany'suitable manner to the wall. a:v in which the doorway is located', they preferably :are;.-dispos:ed adjacent the door opening II and Within a cabinet3l.. Thecabinet has sides; 32 .-andr3v3; atop: 34 and" a. door. 36.supported from thefside 3,'2byxmeans of hinges 37 and serves.
asatstorage place-forthe gate when the same is nolzinuse.y
- .Referring moreA particularly to Figs. 1 and 4, I showrmyrimprovedzmeans for attaching the outer rnemberlll: of lthe gate to the` door. The same comprises; afpair ofY links` 3'8- and" 39` pivotally connectedzasatIiandf42tothe strip 21. The links 38:-andL3ll are' provided :with semicircular cutouts 431L and` 4'4: adapted: to iit about. the door knob handlev IB.. Adjacent the lfree end' of the links Il provide",a..lockingrring46 which passes through an opening 41 inthe-.link 38;..and` is adapted. to
snap into a recess 48 provided on the bottom of the link 3S. It will be apparent that the links 3 8 and 39 may be engaged about the door knob handle I3, the cutouts 43 and 44 permitting the two to be drawn together, and that they may be locked in place by means of the locking ring 46. With the links 38 and 39 thus secured, the outer orfree edge of the extensible gate is locked to the door The overhead guard comprises a plurality of members 49 which are pivotally mounted at one end on a pin 50, carried in a bracket 5I, secured in any suitable manner to the Wall 30 of the room in which the door I0 is located. A member 49a, similar to the members 49, is fastened to the Wall 30 by means of screws 52 and the members 49 are connected to the member 49a and to each other by means of toggles 53, similar to the tog- The. ver-- gies I9. The lwermost member 49 is provided at its free end with a projecting pin 56 which passes loosely through an eye bolt 51 mounted on the upper end of the vertical member i4 of the gate.
From the foregoing the operation of my improved guard Will be readily understood. If it be assumed that the guard is not attached to the door, but is stored in the cabinet 3l, the cabinet door 36 is opened and the member I4 is grasped in the hand and pulled outwardly. The strip v21 ls now positioned against the inner face of the door I0, and the links 38 and 39 are engaged about the door knob handle I3 and the ring 46 is snapped into place, thus securing the links 38 and 39 to the handle. The door I0 is now opened whereupon the gate slides toward the door opening H on the rods 28 and at the same time, the verticalmernbers of the gate separate due to the pivotal action of the links I9. Simultaneously, the members 49 fan out over the top of the door and extensible gate, it being understood that the pin 56 remains inserted through the eye bolt 51 even when the gate is in its storage cabinet 3l. It will be apparent that as long as the pin 56 remains in the eye bolt 51, the opening over the top of the door HJ and the gate is eiectively closed to prevent the entry of a person into the room.
When itis desired to store the guard, the links 38 and 39 are removed from the door knob handle I3 and the gate is pushed inwardly thus collapsing the toggles i9 and the entire mechanism is placed in the cabinet 3l. To facilitate sliding movement of the gate, I may provide the vertical members with casters as indicated at 58. The overhead guard 49 is pushed into place to lie iiush against the'wall 3i! responsivev to inward movement of the gate due to engagement of pin 56 in the eye bolt 51. A small section of the cabinet wall 33 is cut away as indicated at 58 tov permit entry into the cabinet of the end of member 49 carrying pin 56.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that'I have devised a simple and eilective guard for preventing the unauthorized entry of 'persons into a room. It will be noted that thelhinges 23 and 24 at the free edge of the gate permitthe door I9 to be opened or closed a substantial amount without interfering with the connection afforded by the links 38 and 39. Also, as stated, the eye bolt 51 is sufficiently larger than the pin 56 to permit this rotation without the necessity of disengaging the pin B. 1 In actual operation, Ihave found that my improved guard is simple of manutacturasimple of operation, and fully eiective for its intended purposes.
While I have shown my invention in but one form, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited, but is susceptible of various changes and modifications, Without departing from the spirit thereof, and I desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereupon as are specically set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim is: y
l. Ina guard for a doorway embodying a hinged door having a door knob handle, an eX- tensible gate, means to mount one end of the gate adjacent the doorway at the free edge of the door, and means for removably connecting the other end of the gate to the door knob handle.
2. In a guard for a doorway embodying a hinged door having a door knob handle, an eX- tensible gate, a storage cabinet for the gate mounted adjacent the opening at the free edge of the door, horizontally disposed rods in the cabinet, means to slidably mount one end of the extensible gate on said rods, and means to removably attach the other end of the gate to the door knob handle.
3. In a guard for a doorway embodying a hinged door having a door knob handle, an extensible gate, a storage cabinet for the gate p0- sitioned adjacent the opening at the free edge of the door, horizontally disposed rods in the cabinet, means to slidably mount one end oi the gate on said rods, means to pivotally and removably attach the other end of the gate to the door knob handle, an extensible guard positioned above the door and comprising a plurality of members pivotally mounted at one end over said door, a projecting pin on the free end of one of said members, and an eye bolt mounted on the free end of the gate and loosely surrounding said pin.
4. Apparatus as defined in claim 3 in which the means to removably attach the other end of the gate to the door comprises a pair of links pivotally connected to said end of the gate and disposed to engage about the door knob handle.
