Description

Oct. 12, 1948. T. FJELD 2,451,384
RAZOR BLADE SHARPENING APPARATUS Filed Feb. 27, 1946 Patented Oct. 12, 1948 RAZOR BLADE SHARPENING APPARATUS Thorbjiirn Fjeld, Oslo, Norway, assignor to Rolf Arboll, Oslo, Norway Application February 2'7, 1946, Serial No. 650,551 In Norway June 29, 1943 2 Claims. 1
The present invention relates to a razor blade sharpening apparatus of the kind which comprises an upper and a lower portion, both of which are provided with sharpening members between which the blade is sharpened on both sides of the edges during reciprocating and at the same time transverse movement of the blade.
The object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this kind which is characterized by an especially simple construction and by means of which a very efiective sharpening may be obtained.
To this end the invention consists in the feature that the said upper or lower portion is provided with longitudinal, arched or relative to the axis of the apparatus inclined slots, adapted to guide the studs on which the razor blade is held in position during the sharpening and which are secured to a bar or pin reciprocably mounted in the portion of the apparatus in question.
An embodiment of the invention is described in the following with reference to the drawing in which Fig. 1 is a top view of the apparatus in opened condition; Fig. 2 is an end View of the apparatus in closed condition and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the apparatus through the axis of the 'pin, the latter being shown in elevation.
In the drawing l designates the lower portion and 2 the upper portion of the apparatus. The upper as well as the lower portion is provided with sharpening members 3 between which the blade is moved during the sharpening. The bar or pin 4 is reciprocably mounted in the lower portion and is provided with two studs 5 on which the blade is placed during the sharpening. These studs are guided in two arched slots 6 provided in the lower portion so that a longitudinal as well as a transverse movement is imparted to the blade when the pin is moved back and forth.
For obtaining the desired action the slots 6 may, of course, also be straight and. extend in an inclined direction to the axis of the apparatus. The upper as well as the lower portion is covered on the opposing sides with a tin plate having apertures for the sharpening members 3 and the lower plate also has the slots 6 therein. The tin plate of the upper portion is also provided with flaps 1 serving as hinges.
The sharpening takes place in the following manner:
The apparatus is held with the left hand. The upper portion is turned up with the right hand, whereupon the blade is placed in position. The upper portion is now turned down against the lower portion and is pressed with a. ight pressure against the latter. The pin 4 is with the right hand moved back and forth until the sharpening is considered finished.
During the rectilinear, reciprocating movement of the pin 4 the latter will, of course, at the same time perform a turning movement in accordance with the lateral displacement of the studs in the slots 6.
I claim:
1. In a sharpening device for razor blades, the combination of a casing consisting of two por tions which are hinged together along one edge, sharpening members on the inner surface of both portions for sharpening the opposite edges of both sides of a razor blade When the latter is arranged therebetween, a pin reciprocably and turnably mounted in one of the said portions, studs carried by and engageable with the razor blade for holding the latter in position between the sharpening members during the sharpening, the said pin projecting outside the casing to pro vide an operating handle for facilitating the movement of the pin, that portion of the casing hOllSing the pin having longitudinal arched slots on the inside wall thereof adapted to guide the said studs during the sharpening so as to impart to the latter and thus to the blade a reciprocating and at the same time a transverse movement.
2. In a sharpening device for razor blades, the combination of a casing consisting of two portions which are pivotally connected together along one edge, sharpening members arranged on the inner surfaces of both portions for sharpening the blade on both sides of the edges, a pin reciprocably and turnably mounted in one of the said portions, studs carried by the pin and engageable with the razor blade for holding the latter in position during the sharpening, the said pin projecting outside the casing to form an operating handle for facilitating movement of the pin, the inside wall of the portion of the casing housing the pin being provided with slots inclined relative to the axis of the pin and adapted to guide the said studs during the sharpening, so as to impart to the latter and thus to the blade a reciprocating and at the same time a transverse movement.
