Description

O 8- G. E. SPElCHER 2,450,520
LOCKET Filed May 10, 1945 ll-II. 4 A 0/ INVENTOR.
ATTORNEYS Patented Oct. 5, i943 I UNITED "STATES PATENT OFFICE LOCKET Gunther E. Speicher, Washington, D. Application May 10, 1945, Serial No. 592 983 This invention relates to an ornamental locket and more particularly to a locket made of Lucite or similar materials.
An object of this invention is to provide a locket that is transparent and adapted to display jewels or the like which are positioned within the confines of the locket.
The locket is an attractive piece of costume jewelry, easily manufactured from readily moldable plastics.
It is transparent, permitting the observer as well as the wearer to view the articles contained in the locket from all angles.
It is inexpensive yet has the appearance of an expensive piece of jewelry, and while it is shown made in the shape of a heart, it can be made in various shapes, forms and sizes such as might be demanded by the public.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will hereinafter be described in detail, and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application and in which:
Fig. l is a front view of an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. .1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fi 1.
Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional view of the component parts of the locket.
Fig. 6 is an interior side view of one of the component parts.
Fig, 7 is a front view of the circular ring encircling the jewel, and
Fig. 8 is a side view thereof.
Referring more in detail to the drawing the locket It comprises component parts l2, and M which may be molded in the shape of a heart or shaped from solid blocks of plastic by appropriate hand tools.
The parts 12 and i i are transparent and are formed with mating circular inner cavities I6 and it which are positioned approximately in the medial portion thereof.
The bottom 2t of the cavity I8 is provided at the medial point thereof with a conical pocket or socket 22 which is adapted to conform to and receive the conical rear portion 24 of a jewel 26.
The cavities are of such a depth that when the 3 Claims. (Cl. 63-18) conical portion 24 of the jewel 26 is seated in the socket 22 the face 28 of the jewel 26 will contact the bottom 30 of the cavity 16, and be firmly retained in position in the locket.
The jewel 26 is positioned within the opening 32 of a ring which may be made of a contrasting color to the locket Ill. The outer dimensions of the ring 3i are such that at no point does the ring contact the cavities l6 and I8, but is supported by the jewel upon which it is mounted.
The parts l2 and M are provided with aligned openings 36 and 38 respectively, to permit fastening pins 40 to be inserted therein.
The ends of the pins 40 are rounded after assembly to retain the parts l2 and M in a unitary structure.
After the parts l2 and I4 have been assembled a ring receiving portion 42 is affixed to the locked ill at the upper end thereof by paste or similar fastening means.
The portion 42 has an opening 44 therein which is adapted to receive the ring 46 through which a chain or the like may be threaded whereby the locket Hi can be worn aboutthe neck.
The locket is made of a plastic which is susceptible of being colored in the usual manner so that various color combinations and contrasts can be made during the assembly, as each one of the various parts can be made of different colors or they can all be made of the same color.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that a piece of jewelry has been provided that is attractive, ornamental, inexpensive to manufacture, and being made of transparent materials will display the jewel positioned therein.
It will be understood that the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing is used merely as an example of the invention, and that various modifications or changes may be made in the shape or size of the locket or the contents to be displayed without departing from the spirit of the invention or extending beyond the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
l. A device of the character described comprising similar contoured component parts made of a transparent material having circular cavities formed in the inner medial portions thereof, a conical socket formed in one of said cavities, a jewel having the conical portion thereof seated in said socket, the bottom of said second cavity contacting the face of said jewel thereby retain- 5 the jewel and be supported thereby without contact with the cavities formed in the component parts.
3. The invention as described in claim 1, wherein said parts are provided with means for zzc- 1o ceiving' a chain or the like.
