PAINT BRUSH EXTENSION HANDLE Filed May 9, 1947 INVIENTOR. flame/7M0 1 7/0 50 Patented June 15, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE PAINT BRUSH EXTENSION HANDLE Domenico Filardo, Providence, R. I. Application May 9, 1947, Serial No. 747,000
This invention relates to improvement in extension handles, and more particularly to improved extension handles for paint brushes and the like.
It is among the objects of the invention to provide an improved extension handle having several sections which can be quickly and easily as- 'sembled and disassembled to provide a handle of the desired length, and, which will rigidly support one or more brushes in position for the convenient application of paint or other fluid material to a vertical or horizontal surface, which provides for the convenient attachment of brushes thereto and removal of brushes therefrom, which includes brush securing means effective to rigidly secure the brush to the handle against any movement relative to the handle which has a curved end portion arranged to advance the brush toward the surface to which the paint is being applied when the handle and brush are held in operative position relative to the surface, and which is of simple and durable construction, economical to manufacture, and easy to assemble.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following description in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of an extension handle illustrative of the invention, showing a. paint brush in operative association therewith.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the extension handle and brush shown in Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a side elevation on a somewhat enlarged scale of the upper end portion of the construction shown in Figure 1, showing the application of two brushes to the handle.
With continued reference to the drawing, the improved extension handle comprises several sections, as indicated at [0, II and I2, which may be assembled with or disassembled from each other to provide an extension handle of any desired length.
While the detachable joints between the various sections ma be provided in any desired or conventional manner, it has been found convenient to provide these joints by recessing the end portions of the sections which are to be attached to adjoining sections by removing approximately one-half of the section end portion to provide an extending tongue H! of semicircular crosssection and an adjoining recess adapted to receive a similar tongue of an adjoining section. The tongues are provided with spaced apertures which receive screws l4 provided with Wing nuts I! for clamping two overlapping tongues together to thereby join the end portions of two djo n handle sections.
The end section ID has a tongue I3 at one end thereof only and is slightly curved in a single plane, as is clearly shown in Figure 1. This end section or handle portion I0 is provided in its end portion opposite the tongue 13 with a diagonal slot 16, the bottom of which is substantially parallel to a plane including the curved longitudinal center line of this handle member and of a width adapted to receive th handle. l8 of a paint brush, generally indicated at IS. The end section or handle member [0 is provided with recesses 20 and 2|, with the recess 20 disposed between the diagonal slot i6 and the end of the member having the tongue l3 and the recess 2| provided in the endportion of the member It at the lower side of the diagonal slot [6.
A band clamp 22 has a portion thereof received in the recess 20 and i operative to surround the handle member ID and the brush handle l8, The open end of this clamp is fastened by a screw fastener 23 which contacts the clamp about the handle member Ill and the brush handle to assist in rigidly securing the brush to the extension handle. A similar band clamp 24 partly received in the recess 2| surrounds the end portion of the extension handle member ill in which the slot I 6 is provided, and the brush handle It, to also assist in rigidl clamping the brush to the extension handle member. A screw fastener 25 extends through a hole provided in the brush handle l8 and through the member l0 within the diagonal slot l6 to positively secure the brush handle to the extension handle member against longitudinal movement of the brush handle relative to the extension handle member.
The two band clamps 22 and 24 and the screw fastener 25 togetherwith the cooperating diagonal slot is rigidly position the brush i9 relative to the extension handle member In in proper operative position and against relative movement of the brush and the extension handle member.
The brush has a bristle portion 26 secured to the handle l8 in the conventional manner and a cup 21 is secured to the handle and surrounds the base of the bristle portion of the brush in a manner to receive any paint flowing from the bristle portion and tending to run down the handle ofthe brush to the extension handle.
For painting the lower portion of a wall within easy reach of the painter, the extension handle member ID alone may be used. This member provides a comfortable grip for the brush positioned at the proper angle so that the brush maybe used for a long period of time without unduly fatiguing the hands and arms of the painter. Higher portions of a vertical wall may be painted by adding additional sections, such as H and I2. to the member ill to provide a handle 3 of the length necessary to paint any portion of the wall.
By the use of this extension handle the entire sides of a building or the walls of a room may be quickly and conveniently painted without the use of ladders or scaffolding, and the painting may be accomplished from the ground in a minimum 'of time.
When it is desired to provide increased brush capacity two similar brushes l9 and [9 may have their handles i8 and I8 secured together by'suit able means, such as the nails 28, and together secured in a diagonal slot iii of proper'width;
provided in one end portion of an extensionvhandle member 16. These brushes are secured to the member l by the band clamps 22 and 24 which may be the same-as those illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the-increase in thetbrushhandle volume being taken care of bythe adjustable screw fastener-23: Inthis case"thescrew fas tener 25 'extends'between *thertwo brush-handles? l8 and I8 and is threaded into i the member Ill.
within'the slot It. Anwideoup 2'!- is secured 'to' the handles-18 and! 8-; and'surroun'ds th bases of both of thebristle portions 28 and "26' orth'e "two" brushes;
The invention-maybe embodied in other's'pecific forms withoutidepartin'g from the-spirit or essential characteristics thereof; The present embodiments-are; therefore; to be consideredin' all respects as illustrative and not restrictive; the" scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by."the =foregoing'.
