Description

May 4, 1943. J. R. LlNvlLLl-z l RETAINING CLIP FOR SPECTACLE CASES IN V EN TOR.
Patented May 4, 1943 UN'EEE STATES PEENT @FFHCE RETAINING CLIP FOR SPECTACLE CASES John E.. Linville, Drumright, Okla.
Application October 11, 1941, Serial No. 414,673
1 Claim.
This invention relates to retaining clips designed primarily for use in connection with spectacle or the like cases of the hinged type.
An important object of the invention is to provide a retaining clip so constructed that it will be firmly gripped and held in position on the case, by frictional Contact, the cover acting to securely clamp the clip to the case when the hinged sections of the case are moved to their kclosed position, and the cover at the hinge of the case, is stretched taut over the clip.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein described, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating one end of a spectacle case, showing a clip constructed in accordance with the invention, as positioned between the cover and body portion of the case.
Figure 2 is an edge elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Figure 1, illustrating the sections of the case as in their open positions releasing the clip.
Referring to the drawing in detail the reference character 5 designates the hinged sections of a spectacle case, the reference character 6 designating the hinge. The sections 5 are constructed of substantially rigid material, and are covered by the covering 'l which may be of any suitable covering material, such as leather, imitation leather or the like.
The covering 'I at a point adjacent to the hinge 6, is not secured to the sections 5, but is free to move towards and away from the sections, as the hinged sections are opened and closed.
The clip which/is indicated by the reference character 8 comprises a length of substantially wide material having yieldable qualities, such as spring steel or the like. The length of material forming the clip, is bent upon itself providing a substantially long leg member 9 and a shorter leg member I, the leg member 9 having its end tapered as at Il so that it may be readily inserted between the covering 'l and the case, with which the clip is used.
The outer leg of the clip has its free end rolled as at l2, providing a friction member to cooperate with, the wide leg member 9, in gripping the covering of the case.
Thus it will be seen that the gripping qualities of the clip are such that the leg members thereof will grip the covering, when the case has been opened to remove the spectacles therefrom. When the sections of the case are closed, and the clip has been properly positioned, as shown by Figure 4, the clip will be firmly gripped between the covering 1 and outer surface of the case, when the cover 1 is stretched over the clip as shown by Figure 3. Thus it will be seen that the resiliency of the material of which the clip is constructed, is not relied upon solely for securing the clip in position. 'I'he cover when it is stretched over the hinge portion of the case, adds pressure against the clip to hold it in position.
It will also be noted that due to this construction, the clip may be readily and easily removed and positioned on other cases wherein the cover of the case separates from the body portion thereof upon opening the sections of the case.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
The combination with the hinged sections of a case, and a cover secured to the case, the cover being spaced from the case adjacent to the hinge of the case, of a clip embodying a length of wide spring metal material bent upon itself providing an outer leg member and an inner leg member, the inner leg member being substantially long and terminating at a point an appreciable distance beyond the free end of the outer leg member, and adapted to extend between the cover and the case at a point adjacent to the hinge connecting the sections of the case, said leg members adapted to grip the cover, securing the clip to the cover, and said cover adapted to be stretched over the inner leg member of the clip, holding the clip in position When the sections of the case are moved to their closed positions.
JOHN R. LINVILLE.
