G R A T E SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,710, dated August 3.1, 1.880. Application filed July 16, isso. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT L. Goonn- NOW and WILLIAM J. Owens, citizens of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grates and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to an improvement in the class of rotary grates and their connections for stoves and furnaces, and it consists in certain details and principles of construction, hereinafter more fully described and shown.
Its object is to provide a grate that is easily operated, and will effectually and quickly clear the fire of ashes and break up and remove all clinkers, slag, and cinders.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of our grate and its connections. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is the frame or rest upon which the grate is supported and oscillated.

The grate A is circular in form, and is provided with one or more central horizontal bars, Q, the ends of which are pivoted in opposite sides of the rim of the grate, whereby they are capable of an independent rocking motion. Depending from the front end of these bars are forked arms R, which embrace concentric radial studs S, 1; rojecting from the inner side of the grate-ring.
The grate-frame is hinged or pivoted to the rear of the furnace in the usual manner, and a hook or latch, d, is provided in front for holding it in place. At suitable intervals slots N are provided for the rollers O. The edges of these slots, which form the track or bearings for the rollers, are beveled or A-shaped, in order that they may readily clear of ashes, and

WVe are aware that grates have been heretofore constructed having horizontally-pivoted rotating bars. We are also aware that antifriction wheels or rollers have been employed in connection with grates and furnaces; but we do not claim these, broadly.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The circular grate provided with the central pivoted rocking bars, Q,, having the depending forked arms R, in combination with the studs S of the ring or frame, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the recessed grate A, the rollers O, mounted in the gratering M, having the grooved arbors e, fitting the conical supports 01, with the ash-sifter supported on similar rollers, substantially as described, and
for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of the grate. A, graterest M, having the conical bearings 01, and the rollers O, with the grooved arbors e, substanis oscillated by means of depending forked tially as described, and for the purpose speciarms embracing fixed radial studs in the gratefied. v ring, for the purpose set forth.
