1 Claim.

The present invention relates to a handle suitable for use as a drawer` pull, door pull, or the like.

The aim of the invention is to provide a handle of this sort which may be easily secured in position by means of wood screws or the like, which is neat and pleasing in appearance, which is simple and rigid in construction, which is economical in manufacture, and which, after it is secured in place, will not readily work loose or come apart.

In accordance with the present invention, provide a bowed handle member which may be secured in place by screws passed from the front of the handle member through the same and into the panel or other member to which it is to be secured; and a cover for enclosing the handle member and concealing the securing screws from View, the handle member and the cover being so constructed and arranged that the cover may be very quickly and readily pressed into position with a wiping action and in which position it is securely held against displacement.

Other objects will be in part obvious, and in part pointed out more in detail hereinafter.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination 'of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplied in the construction hereinafter set forth and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown, for illustrative purposes, one embodiment which the present invention may take:

Fig. 6 is-a perspective view of the handle as seen from the rear, a' portion of the bowed handle member beingbroken away for the purpose of illustration.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the handle member, designated generally by the letter A, comprises a rigid strip of metal having a bowed or flattened U-shaped hand gripping portion I9 terminating in laterally extending tongues Il. The extreme ends of these tongues are turned forand comprises a curved, channel-shaped piece` of thin sheet metal which has some resiliency. The cover has a central or forward wall 20 which is longitudinally curved throughout its length and which is slightly longer than the over-all length of the handle member ID. The cover has flanges 2| extending rearwardly from the upper and lower edges of the central wall and these straddle the handle member throughout its length. The rear edges of these anges conform to the horizontal cross sectional conguration of the handle member, as will be seen most clearly from Figs. 3 to 6, so that the cover will t over the handle member and conceal the same from the front, above and below. More particularly, it will be seen that the rear edges of these flanges are curved at their central portions, as at 22, correspondingly to the curvature of the bowed portion I0 of the handle member, and the edges, to either end of the curved portions 22, are straight, as at 23. These rear edges are ush with the rear face of the handle member throughout substantially the length thereof. The cover has, at the opposite ends of its forward wall I3, inturned integral lugs 24 which, as shown in Fig. 3, are adapted to take in behind the lips or outer ends I2 of the tongues whereby the cover is secured in place to the handle member.

With the arrangement described, the handle may be very quickly and readily secured in place. To do this, it is merely necessary to secure the handle member I0 (before assembling the cover thereon) to the drawer or panel P by inserting the screws from the front through the apertures i3 and then turning the screws home in the panel. The cover may then be pressed into place by positioning it over the handle member with one of the lugs 24 engaging behind one of the lips I2 and the rear face of the other lug engaging the end edge of the other lip I2, and then applying pressure to successive portions of the cover so as to exert components of force towards the drawer and towards the last mentioned lug. More particularly, assuming that during the asembly of the cover on the handle member, the left hand lug 28 (referring to Fig. 3) is first engaged behind the lip, the person applying the cover may by means of his thumb positioned, at a press the` cover towards the handle member and towards the right hand end of the handle member, thereby bringing the anges of the cover into Contact with the edges of the handle member andsthen sliding his thumb in the direction of the arrow b without relieving the pressure. rIhis operation will cause the cover member to elongate slightly, with the result that the right hand lug will snap in behind the right hand lip. Due to the engagement of the lugsbehind the lips, the cover member is securely held in position and there is no possibility of it becoming displaced under ordinary usage.

It is further observed that my improved construction is relatively simple as it comprises but two parts each of which may be very cheaply and easily manufactured and the assembly of which may be affected with facility. The assembled handle presents a very pleasing appearance, particularly so as the handle member Aand the securing screws are concealed from View' by theA cover.

As many" changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely difierent embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in alimiting sense.

It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claim is intended to cover all of the generic and specic features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.

I claim as my invention:

A handle of the character described comprisng'a rigid handle member formed of a strip or metal and provided with a central bowed gripping portion and outwardly extending tongues at the ends of said gripping portion, said tongues having openings for accommodating attaching screws and the outer ends of said tongues being turned forwardly soas to provide lips, and a channelshaped cover formed of resilient sheet metal and having a curved forward wall extending from one end` of said handle member to the other and anges projecting rearwardly from said forward wall and straddling said handle member, the rear edges of said Iianges conforming in shape t0 the horizontal sectional coniiguration of said handle member, said forwardV wall of said cover having at its opposite ends preformed inwardly extending lugs engaged behind said lips, said cover being resilient in th-e direction of its length whereby it may be snapped into position on said handle member.
