1 Claim.
The invention relates to closure constructions and refers more particularly to water-tight doors, hatches, and the like, for use in ships.
The invention has for some of its objects to provide an improved closure construction in which the bodies of the member having the opening and of the closure for the opening are approximately in the same plane; to provide a closure construction which is water-tight; and to provide a closure construction which is so made that it will readily withstand the usual pressure to which it may be subjected.
The invention has for other objects to provide the closure construction with an improved dog for use in locking the closure in closed position; to so form the dog that it may be readily mounted in predetermined position on either the member with the opening or the closure; and to provide the dog with a stop which forms a part of the base of the dog, thereby facilitating making the complete assembly.
With these and, other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.

the frame I comprising the endless fiat body 2, the endless flange 3 extending transversely of the body beyond both sides thereof and bordering the opening, and the curved connecting portion 4 between one edge of the flange and the adjacent edge of the body. The closure for the opening is the door 5 having the fiat body 6 and the endless channel I at the edge of the body and registering with and opening toward the free edge of the flange 3. 8 is an endless sealing member, preferably in the nature of a rubber gasket, located in the channel I, the latter being dovetailed to hold the gasket from accidental disengagement. The channel is laterally oifset from the door body in a direction away from the frame so that in the closed position of the door the channel cooperates with the transverse flange of the frame to position the door body approximately in the plane of the frame body, it being noted that the two bodies are in nearly the same The door is preferably hinged along one side to the frame by the hinges 9 each of which comprises a hinge leaf l0 preferably welded to the Figure 3 is an enlarged elevation at the side opposite that in Figure l of a portion of the closure construction;

The invention is applicable to closure constructions, such as doors, hatches, and the like, which comprise a member having an opening, a closure for the opening, and means for holding the closure in closed position. In the presentinstance, a water-tight door for use in a ship as, for example, in a ship bulkhead, is shown.
In detail, the member having the opening is door body and channel, the hinge leaves II at opposite sides of the hinge leaf l0 and preferably welded to the frame body, and the pin [-2 extending through the leaves.
For holding the door in closed position with the transverse flange of the frame making a water-tight connection with the sealing gasket, I have provided the series of dogs l3 which are spaced around the frame to engage the door at a number of spaced zones. The dogs are alike and, as shown particularly in Figures 3, 4 and 5, each dog comprises the tubular member I4 in the nature of a pipe and the base member IS in the nature of a plate encircling and permanently secured to the tubular member in predetermined position as by being welded thereto at l6. As a result, the pipe and plate form a unit base which when mounted on the frame body 2 has the pipe 14' extending transversely of the frame body through a hole of slightly larger diameter and also has the plate l5 abutting the frame body at the side of the connecting portion 4. The plate is'formed at diametrically opposite sides of the pipe with the accurately located holes H for receiving the rivets l8 which extend through the holes IS in the frame body. The rivet holes 19 are predeterminedly located on the frame body so that when the unit base is assembled with the frame body and the rivets are headed the unit base is accurately positioned on the frame body by means of the plate I5. More particularly,
the plate effects the predetermined positioning by abutting the frame body and by engaging the rivets. The rivets make a water-tight connection with the frame base so that no water can leak between the rivets and the frame base. The unit base is permanently secured to the frame base after the unit base has been predeterminedly positioned and the rivets have been headed by weldihgthe: outer sidzoi'theepipe. 1-4 to the side of the frame base opposite the plate l5 at 20. The spot welds hold the unit base and frame together while the unit base is being permanently secured to the frame base by welding the outer side of the unit base pipe to the frame base at 36. The weld 36 is endless and seals the joint to make the assembly water-tight. This construction is generally preferable to that using rivets since it may be more easily made water-tight.
In the modification illustrated in Figures 7 and"8;;..the:dogs are mounted on the door 31. Figures 9 and 10 illustrate another modifi'cae tion which differs. essentially informing? the dog arm 52,.the hand lever 53 and the shaft ai -integral, with the dog arm extending'fromthe shaft in a direction opposite the hand lever. The remainder of the: construction, including the unit base, the wedge strike, and: the manner of securing the unit and wedge strike in place, is substantially the same as. illustrated in Figures 7 and 8;
What I claim as my invention is:.
A dog for a closure construction having a member with an opening and a closure memb'er'fbr the opening; said. dog comprisinga. tubule-mnember and a base member extending transversely ofsaid tubular member and? permanently secured thereto and forming therewith au-nit basey said base -member abutting one; side ofs'oner of the.- members: of the. closure construction: and having a predeterminedly positioned stopiorming -a:part;thereof;. said. tubular member; extending transversely through the last-mentioned: member ofrthe closurenonstruction; cooperatingibossesion said base member andthn lastfmentioned member of the closure construction: for psedeterminedly positioning said base member relative to the last mentioned member of the closure construction and thereby predeterminedly positioning, said unit base on the last mentioned member of the closure construction, endless weld material at the other side of the last mentioned member of the closure construction for permanently securing said tubular member to said last mentioned member of the closure construction and sealing the joint therebetween, a shaft journaled in said tubular member, and a swinging arm secured to said shaft and engageable with said stop for limiting swinging movement of said arm.
