invention relates to revolvers and'in particular to'actions therefor.
Objects-of the invention include the provision of .a revolver having a removable side plate on thelframe which covers and conceals the entire action whenin placeand when removed reveals the 'action for repair, assembly-.and disassembly.
=Further objects of the invention reside in the provision of. a novel revolver action including a trigger spring element which cooperates with the 'hammerto permit the same to be fired when the trigger is retracted but which maintains the hammerin .a..position wherein it cannot be fired except under trigger retraction; the provision of a lifter for rotating the magazine cylinder in combination with a removable side plate on the frame, said side plate mounting a detent for maintaining the lifter in operative position; and the provision of a revolver action including a novel hammer and trigger construction.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of a revolver embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with parts broken away and with the side plate removed;
Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2 but with the I parts shown in firing position;
Fig. 4 is a side view of the interior surface of the side plate.
In Fig. 1 there is shown a revolver having a barrel ID, a frame l2 and a grip I4. A magazine cylinder I6 is mounted in any desired manner in the frame to rotate on an axis as is customary. The grip I4 is hollow and is closed at the sides by means of cover plates [8 which may be attached to this grip by any suitable means desired.
The frame 12 is provided with a circular aperture 20 located between the magazine cylinder and the grip and this aperture is adapted to be closed by means of a substantially circular plate 22, this plate, however, having a cut-out portion 24 to correspond to the shape of the frame in the region of the hammer 26. A hammer pin 52: pivotally mounts the'hammer'26, the latter extending belowtheghammer pin and having a depending lug 54 and a forwardly extending nose 56. This nose is notched at the underside of its forwardmost extent as is clearly seen in Figs. 2 and 3. A hammer spring or main spring 58 is mounted to project a rod. 60 in a direction to continuously urge the hammer towards firing position, spring 58 and rod 60 being located within the grip I4 and rod 60 engaging the hammer to one side of the hammer pin 52. A hammer lifting element 62 is mounted to pivot on a pin on the hammer and element 62 is therefore movable with the hammer. A spring 64 normally maintains element 62 in its forwardmost position, limited however by a shoulder 66 on the hammer. The element 62 may therefore be depressed in towards the hammer but it cannot extend any further in a counter-clockwise direction than the position shown in the drawing.
It will be noted that in Fig. 2 the trigger finger 44 rests on the hammer nose 56 and this position is maintained by the trigger spring 14 which abuts a fixed pin 16, the latter being straddled by a trigger spring element 18 which is stepped on its upper surface as shown at 80. Element 18 is guided in its movement by part 38 of the frame. A forwardly extending pin 19 on the trigger spring element 18 engages a cam surface on the trigger, and the engagement of this pin with the cam surface being below the trigger pin 42, the trigger is consistently urged in a counter-clockwise direction.
Fig. 2 shows the revolver action at rest and it will be seen that the depending lug 54 on the hammer is stopped by a high step on the trigger spring element and this step is arranged to hold hammer is allowed to move forwardly far enough to fire a shell.

When the trigger is pulled as just described it will clearly elevate the lifter 46 to rotate the cylinder I6, and the lifter is maintained in its highest position, see Fig. 3, until the trigger is released, whereupon the lifter will return to the Fig. 2 position ready to again rise to rotate the cylinder.
If the hammer is cooked by the operatonhammer nose 56 will retract the trigger until the trigger finger :44 slips off from the hammer nose under influence of the trigger spring 14, but at this instant the hammer is fully retracted and the notch in the hammer nose will engage the end of trigger finger 44 and maintain it in cocked retracted position. Under these circumstances a very slight additional pull on the trigger will release the hammer to fire a shell. v

1. A revolver comprising a frame, a cylinder, a cylinder lifter, a removable side plate for the frame, and resilient means on the side plate engaging the lifter to press the latter toward the cylinder to engage and rotate the same.
2. A revolver comprising a frame, a cylinder thereon, a lifterfor rotating the cylinder, means to actuate the lifter, a. removable side plate for the frame, means forming a shoulder on the side plate, and a spring-pressed detent mounted on the shoulder and extending into engagement with the lifter and maintaining the latter in operative position relative to the cylinder.
3. A revolver comprising a frame, a, cylinder thereon, a lifter for rotating the cylinder, means to actuate the lifter, a removable side plate for the frame, means on the removable plate forming a support, and resilient means mounted on the support and in engagement with the lifter 11.0 yieldingly press the latter toward the cylinder.
LA firearm comprising a frame, a cylinder, movable lifter means to advance the cylinder, said frame being provided with an opening, a removable plate for closing the opening, a trigger to move the lifter means, and means on the removable plate in a position for engaging and pressing the lifter means in a direction to engage the cylinder as the trigger is operated to move the lifter means.
