' CARTON AND cARToN BLANK Filed April 7, 1944' Q I 'INVENTOR.
I f l/Z/MF Pow ATTORNEYS Patented June 26, 1945 U ITE STATES PATENT OFFICE CARTON AND CARTON BLANK Arthur Rous, New York, N. Y. Application April '7, 1944, Serial No. 530,034
4 Claims.
My invention relates to a new and improved box or carton, and a new and improved blank from which said carton can be assembled, or from which a part of the carton can be assembled.
The principal objects of my invention are to provide a carton which can be made by assembling a suitable fiat blank, in order to provide a pouring opening, which has an improved gate or closure. Said blank is optionally a one-piece blank.
Another object of the invention is to provide a carton of this type which can be manufactured at low cost.
Additional objects of the invention will be stated in the annexed description and drawing which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof.
Fig. l isa plan view of a blank which is folded or assembled, in order to provide the improved carton. This view is toscale, and reference is made thereto for various details. For convenience, the vertical axis of the blank in Fig. l, is designated as its longitudinal axis.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the pouring end of the carton with the gate in the closed position;
Fig. 3 is'a view, similar to Fig. 2, showing the gate in the open position.
'Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fi 2.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
, Fig. 6 is a sectional view' on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
The carton comprises an external front Wall M, a rear wall l2, side walls I! and I3, and an internal front wall or internal front flap l0. These walls [0, H, l2, l3 and M are designated as longitudinal walls. They provide the body of the assembled carton. I
In the assembled carton, the external front wall l4 overlies the internal front wall or internal front flap l0. Said Walls 14 and Ill are connected to each other by any suitable adhesive, or in any other manner, save for flap Zla.
. The internal front wall has a rectangular bottom flap l9 and the external front wall l4 has a rectangular bottom flap 20. In the assembled carton, said bottom flap 2!] is located under said bottom flap l9, and said flaps l9 and 20 are connected to each other by any suitable adhesive or the like.
The internal front wall ID has a rectangular top flap 28 which is provided with an opening 25.
The external front wall M, which has a free longitudinal edge, is provided with a curved through-and-through cut 0 which extends laterally inwardly from said freeedge. in order to provide a flap Zia, which is integral with external front wall 14. The free longitudinal edge of said front wall l4 joins an inwardly directed or cut-away edge-portion 22, which extends to said curved cut-line c.
' The external front wall I4 has a top flap 26 which is provided with a longitudinal or vertical through-and-through cut C, in order to provide another flap 2|. Such flap 2| has an edge portion 2Ib which is inclined to the longitudinal vertical axis of the blank in Fig. 1. Said flap 2| is the gate or closure of the carton.
The rear wall I2 is provided with a rectangu- I lar top flap 21, and with a rectangular bottom flap 29. The side wall 13 is provided with a rectangular top flap l6 and with a rectangular bottom flap l8. The side wall II is provided with a rectangular top flap [5 and with a rectangular bottom flap I1.
The flap I5 is provided with an opening 24 which is laterally aligned with the opening 25 of the flap 28 in the flat blank of Fig. 1. Said openings 24 and 25 are of equal diameter. The fiap I6 is provided with a pouring opening 23 which is smaller than the perforations 24 and Z5. The blank is scored along the respective lines s and it is cut through and through along the respective cut-lines c.
In order to assemble the carton, the blank is folded along the vertical score lines s of Fig. 1, until the respective external and internal front walls l4 and I0 abut each other, and said front walls [4 and I!) are parallel to the rear wall l2. The side walls II and I3 are then parallel to each other. The flaps I9 and 20 are bent inwardly until they are perpendicular to the Walls I0 and M. The flap 20 is located under the flap I9, and these flaps l9 and 20 are'connected by adhesive. The iiap 29 is bent inwardly. The free edges of said flaps I9, 20 and 29 then abut each other or slightly overlap each other. The flaps I! and I8 are then bent inwardly, so that the flap I1 is located under flap l8. "I'hese flaps l9, ll, 29, I8, and 20 at the bottom end of the box are secured to each other by. adhesive, thus permanently closing the bottom end of the box or carton.
'The flaps 28 and 21 are then bent inwardly, and the flap 26 is then bent inwardly. Said flap 26 overlies the unperforated part of the flap 28, without overlying the perforation or opening 25.
The flap 26 is fixed to the adjacent part of the flap 28 by adhesive or the like. The gate flap 2| is also bent inwardly, so that said flap 2| closes the opening 25. The flap I5 is then bent inwardly,,so that its opening 24 registers with the opening of the flap 28. The gate fi'ap 2| is thus located slidably between the superposed flaps 28 and I5 of the pouring end-wall of the carton.
The flap I6 is then bent inwardly so that its opening 23 is aligned with the aligned openings 24 and 25. v .1 v
The assembly of the flaps atthe' top of the box is made by adhesive or in any other suitable manner, so that the flaps 2| and 2Ia are freely outwardly movable relative to the adjacent flaps and walls of the box.
When the gate-flap 2| is in its closed position, which is shown in Fig. 2, its supporting flap 2|a is flush with the external front wall :I 4. The cutaway edge-portion 22 provides a notch which makes it easy to manipulate the flap 21a.
The perforation 23 is initially closed by a re movable closure which is integral with the flap "Hi. For this purpose, the flap -|;6 may be provided with a removable 'diskat the opening 23,"?so that said diskcan be easily removed from the assembled carton. .The flap 1-6 can be scored at the edge'of opening 23.
Hence, after the gate-flap .21 hasbeen moved into the open pouringposition shown in Fig. 3,
the removable disk which. initially. plugs the :out- 3 The gate-flap 24 thus provides samba gate for controlling the dispensing of the contents of the carton, through itslpouring opening. The tipsof the gate-flap 2.! remains located between the respective adjacent end-flaps of the pouring end-wall, when .said gateeflap 2| is init-s :open position. The longitudinal body wall ld-serves: as a gate-supporting WalLsii-rce the gate-supporting .flap am is tumably connected to body wall H.
In the blank, :saidgate-supporting wall 14 nasal,
free longitudinally disposed edge. The sealing flaps Ia, 41,29, -18,2B-ar.e disposed laterally relative to the longitudinal axis of the blank, :at laterally coincident edges of the body walls of the blank.
The flaps 28, I5, 21, Hiy -and 26 :are similarly laterallydisposed. r
