Application January 22, 1943, Serial No. 473,166
Claims.
This invention relates to eye shields and particularly to that type of shield which is used by mechanics and the like to protect the eyes against flying particles of abrasive, dust, metal or other deleterious substances.
An object of the invention is the provisionof an eye shield which is light in weight, sturdy in construction, and one which may be worn over the eye glasses of the user to provide unrestricted vision and provide complete protection to the eyes and glasses, from missiles fiying in any direction.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an eye shield which is constructed so that parts may be interchanged and parts which receive excessive wear may be easily replaced.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device with parts constructed and arranged so that the lens member or face plate is protected against scratches to its surface when the device is laid on a table, bench or the like.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character referred to, which is shatter proof, and will not fog up, sweat, or otherwis obscure the vision when in use.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description proceeds, reference being made from time to time to the accompanying drawing in which: I
Fig. l is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the face plate thereof.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing it will be understood that in the embodiment herein disclosed my improved eye shield consists generally of a rim member I, and a lens member or face plate 8, which are preferably made of a suitable plastic material, such as cellulose acetate, polystyrene or the like, and secured to one another as hereinafter described. The-rim member 1 is preferably blanked out with the edge 9, shaped to fit the contour of the face of the wearer. The edge 9 is finished with a channel member 9A, which is made of a plastic. rubber or other suitable material secured in place by any suitable means. The edge It is formed straight, so that when the parts are assembled it overhangs the face plate 8, as at H, to provide a means to hold the face plate 8, off of any flat surface, such as a bench, or the like,
on which the shield might be laid, thus preventing the face plate 8 from becoming scratched. The rim 1 is provided with apertures l2, which serve to ventilate the interior of the device when it is in use. Formed along the inside of the rim I is a groove I3, which is adapted to engage the peripheral edg ll of the face plate 8 to assist in holding the parts in assembled relation. The ends ofthe rim I terminate in hooks as at l5, which are adapted to engage the angular slots 16, which are positioned on either side of the nose cut out l1, formed in the face plate 8. A flexible head strap I8 is provided to hold the device on the head. The face plate 8 may be tinted or colored for use in welding if desired.
To assemble the device the rim member I is first bent around the face plate 8, and the hooks l5 are inserted in the angular slots IS. The face plate is then sprung into the groove I3, and the parts are locked in position.
Havingdescribed my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described the combination of a lens member of transparent, shatter proof material, a. cut out portion in said lens member adapted to accommodate the nose of a wearer, angularly positioned slots in said lens member adjacent said out out portion, and a rim member comprisin a strip of plastic material bent and rebent around the periphery of said lens member, and secured in position thereon by hooks formed at the ends of said strip, which hooks are adapted to cooperate with said slots formed in said lens member, to assist in locking the said lens member and said rim member in assembled relation.
2. An eye shield, comprising a substantially loop-shaped, open-ended rim member made of a strip of plastic material shaped at its inner edge to fit the contour of the face and provided adjacent its outer edge with an internal groove and at its opposing open ends with hook-like elements, and a lens member of transparent material detachably fitted in said rim member and having elements therein for registering engagement with the companion hook-like elements of the rim member to retain the rim and lens members in assembled relation.
3. An eye shield, comprising an open-ended rim member shaped at its inner edge to fit the contour of the face and terminating at its lower open end in opposing hook-like elements diverging upwardly and outwardly, and a lens member detachably fitted in said rim member and shaped at its lower edge to fit the contour of the nose and provided adjacent opposite sides thereof with downwardly-converging notches for-receiving the hook-like elements of the rim member.
4. An eye shield, comprising an open-ended rim member shaped at its inner edge to fltvthe contour of the face and having its front edge substantially straight, inwardly bent hook-like elements formed at the opposing, open ends of the rim member adioining the front edge thereof, said rim member having a groove in the inner face thereof and spaced rearwardly of and parallel to its straight front edge, and a lens member fitted in said rim member in engagement at its periphery with said groove and having spaced notches therein for registering engagement with said hook-like elements.
5. In a device of the character described, the
' combination of a. lens member of transparent,
shatterproof material, a cut out portion in said edge and having a longitudinal groove in spaced relation to said regular edge adapted to accommodate the periphery of said lens member to assist in holding the rim and lens members in assembled relation.
