Description

Oct. 31, 1944. R. E. SMITH BOX OR CONTAINER Filed July l5, 1942 INVENTOR.
the container is formed.
Patented Oct. 31, 1944 BOX 0R CONTAINER Richard E. Smith, Kalamazoo, Mich., assigner to Sutherland Paper Company, Kalamazoo,
4`Mich.
Application July 15, 1942, serial No. 451,054
(cl. zza-44) 4 Claims.
'I'his invention relates to improvements in a box or container.
The main objects of this invention are:
- First, to provide a box or carton well adapted for use as a tobacco box or package and for other commodities wherev tin has been commonly used.
Second, to provide a box or container formed entirely of brous paper stock such as carton or container board which may be readily opened and at the same time may be provided with the revenue stamps such as are commonly used on tobacco packages, the revenue stamps being destroyed when the container is opened.
Third, to provide a structure having these advantages which is strong and rigid.
Fourth, to provide a box or container of' the class described which may be formed of a single integral blank.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of the invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A box or container embodying the features -of the invention is clearly illustrated in the accom- Danying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of a box or container embodying the features of my invenor scores 9. 'I'he outer front, rear and end'wallsV I, 2, 3 and 4 are provided with bottom closure naps or members I0, II, I2 and I3, respectively. They are also provided with top closure flaps or vmembers I4, l5, I6 and Il, respectively. These tending transversely acrossthe same in parallel relation to the hinging connection for its cover ap I5. The front outer wall member has a. fracturing zone or line of severance extending across the same in substantially spaced relation toits upper edge, and it has a U-shaped slit 2| extending downwardly from this fracturing line tion completely sealed or closed, no revenuestamps or outside ornamentation or printing being shown.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view with the box opened. I
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view with the box re-closed.
Fig. 4 is a perspective viewin section on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical section on line y 5--5 0f Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view illus- I trating certain of the steps of forming thecarton or container.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the blank from which In the accompanying drawing the invention is illustrated as embodied in a box or container adapted as a tobacco `box or package. It will be understood that it ls capable oflembodiment in boxes or containers for various uses.
- The embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawing comprises an outer vfront .wall I, outer rear wall 2 and outer end walls 3 and 4. It also comprises the inner front wall 5,y inner rear wall 6, 'and' inner end walls 1 and 8. These several walls are alined and hingedly connected in the integral blank by means of the hinging zones 20 to provide a tongue 22. 'Ifhe outer end walls have diagonally disposed fracturing lines or lines of severance 23 extending from the ends of the fracturing line 2|) of the front wall l to the end of the flexing line I9 of the outer rear wall.
In setting up orsealing the box the inner Wall members are folded along the hinging line between the inner end wall 8 and the innerffront wall 5. hThus folded it is again folded upon the outer walls 2 and 3 and the outer side of the inner rear wall S is adhesively secured to the inner side of the outer rear wall 2v along the sealing zone or line 24 as shown in Figs; 4 and 7. The outer front and end walls I and 4 are then folded upon the previously folded walls and adhesively secured along the line 25, see Figs. 4 and 7. Thus` As stated, the structure illustrated is adapted for use as a tobacco container, and when so used the revenue stamps would be placed over the fracturing zones or lines as desired.
With the box or container closed as shown ln Fig. 1 it may be easily opened by' fracturing along the line 23 which provided a cover hinged upon the-flexing zones I9, the cover having a depending tongue 22. The cover closes over the upper ends of the inner walls and. to provide an effective retaining means the inner front wall 5 has a slit 2l formed therein and adaptedt o' receive the tongue 22'as shown in Figs. 3 and 5.
The lines 28 on the closure naps AII and I5 indicate perforations which are provided to facilitate gluing. inasmuch as the stock employed is preferably faced or hardfinished on both sides.
While made entirely of .fibrous container stock my improved box or container is well adapted for use as a substitute for metal containers. Itis strong and rigid so that it may be carried in a pocket if desired, and is attractive in appearance.
To facilitate opening the cover, designated generally by the numeral 30, aslitA 3l is formed exthe art to embody or adapt the invention asmay be desired for particular purposes. Having thus described my invention what I claim asnew and desire to secu're by letters Patent is: f
