Definitions

- This invention is decidedly an improvement on the ordinary pepper boxes, the perforat-ions of the former cannot become choked or clogged as those of the latter, nor will the top or cap of the former be detached from the cruet or box as is often the case in using the ordinary kinds in consequence of shaking them to cause the discharge or escape of the pepper.

Description
UNITED STATB PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY T. CLAW'SON, OF NEWBERN, NORTH CAROLINA.
PEPPER-CRUE'I.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,349, dated December 21, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY T. CLAWSON, of Newbern, in the county of Craven and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pepper Cruets and Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, said drawing being a vertical central section of my invention.
This invention consists in placing within the top of the pepper cruet or box a rotating or semirotating brush, substantially as hereinafter shown and described, whereby the perforations of the top of the box or cruet are prevented from becoming choked or clogged and a free discharge of pepper insured at all times when the box or cruet is used.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a cruet and B, is a top or cap which is fitted thereon in the usual or in any proper way. The top or cap may be constructed of met-a1 and perforated the same as those in common use. lVithin the top or cap B, a rotary brush 0, is placed. This brush is formed of a shaft a, to one end of which a knob or thumb Wheel I), is attached, said knob or thumb wheel being at the outer side of the top or cap. To the shaft (1, a series of bristles or brushes 0, are attached, the bristles being sufficiently long to ust touch the inner surface of the top or case as the shaft a, is turned.
The cruet is used by inverting it over the dish or article to be supplied with pepper and the brush C, is rotated, 'or oscillated back and forth with a reciprocating partially rotating movement by grasping the thumb wheel 6, and the bristles 0, brush the pepper through the perforations of the top or cap B, and in greater or less quantities according to the speed given the brush C.
It will be seen that this invention may be applied either to a glass cruet or to an ordinary tin pepper box. The rotary brush may be constructed in any proper way although the mode herein described would probably be as good as any. probably might be used instead of bristles for brushes, but the bristles would be better for general use.
This invention is decidedly an improvement on the ordinary pepper boxes, the perforat-ions of the former cannot become choked or clogged as those of the latter, nor will the top or cap of the former be detached from the cruet or box as is often the case in using the ordinary kinds in consequence of shaking them to cause the discharge or escape of the pepper.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Placing within the perforated top or cap B, of a pepper cruet or box A,, a rotating or reciprocating partially rotating brush C, ar-
ranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY T. CLAVSON. lVitnesses THos. H. ALLEN, JAs. T. MATTHEWS.
