This invention relates to improvements in guns of the small arms or shoulder type, it more particularly relating to'tha't classof 'guns of the type stated known as release fire gunssuch as shown and described in my United States Letters PatentA No. 2,027,950, dated January 14th, 1936.
In guns of the kind `described some shooters prefer that the gun may be used either as a release fire gun or as a standard gun. By release re is meant that the trigger is pulled back to the limit of its stroke and the hammer released when the pressure of the finger is relieved upon the trigger such as described in the patent referred to. By the standardre type of gun is meant one in which the gun is red upon a rearward pressure on :the trigger.
The object ofthe present invention is to provide la simple and effective means :whereby the gun may be converted either into a release fire or a standard fire. i A

Referring to the drawing, I represents a pororricl;
tion of the breach block, 2 a portion of the grip and 3 an intermediate casing which houses lthe action of the gun. The impact member in the present case is in the form of a hammer l pivoted at 5in the casing. The trigger is indicated at 5 and in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the trigger has the sear 'l connected rigidly thereto, this sear cooperating with a notch 3 in the hammer in the usual way to Ahold Ait in cocked positionuntil released by rearward pressure upon the trigger. The trigger also has rigidly attached thereto a detent nger 9 which cooperates with a pin l0 on the hammer to hold the hammer when the gun is to be used `in release firing. The trigger, its sear and detent are` pivoted to the casing at Il. A coil spring I2 coiled about a pin I3 which is pivotally connected to the hammer urges the hammer to firing position when released.
Means for controlling the action to convert 'the gun either into a standard fire gun or release fire is in the form of a pin Ill which in the present case is slidably mounted in a portion of the finger guard l5 just beneath the free end of the sear 1. This pin is cutaway on its upper side to form a depression I'G and is held in either one of two positions by a catch in the `form of a pin il which is urged by a small coil spring i9 into one of two recesses I9 or 20, the spring being located within `a small chamber 2l in the casing.
In operation, when the gun" is to be used as a standard firing gun the pin is` slid to the position shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 in which it will be seen that the high portion 22 of the pin will be beneath the Sear l so that when the trigger is pressed rearwardly the trigger .6 and its detent 9 will be allowed only a limited movement suicient to release the sear from the notch in the hammer and permit the firing of the gun in the usual way. If, however, it is desired to use the gun in release ring the pin is slid to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 which brings the depression IS beneath the outer end of the sear so that the trigger and its detent 9 will be permitted an additional rearward movement which will not only release the sear from the hammer but will also cause the hook 9' -on the detent to engage the pin I0 on the hammer and hold the hammer uniSil til pressure is relieved upon the trigger at which time the' pressure on the spring 23 will swing the detent out of engagement with the pin lll.
It will be understood that when the gun is used in release ring the parts are so timed that the detent 9 will engage the pin l0 practically simultoneously with the release of the hammer by the sear 1 and if the shooter will press the trigger with a rapid movement any opportunity for the gun to fire prematurely is obviated.
In Figs. 7 and 8 a modication is shown in which the Sear is formed separately from the trigger. The casing which supports the parts is indicated at 3, the hammer or impact member at 24, the trigger at 25, and the sear at 2E. The trigger has a detent 21 formed integrally therewith which is adapted to engage with a tail 28 on the hammer and the sear will engage with the usual notch 29 on the hammer. The sear is pivoted at an intermediate point on a pin 30 and has its rear end resting upon the trigger which is pivoted at 3|. 'Ihe hammer is pivoted at 32 and is urged to firing position by the spring 33. The trigger has on its rear side a projection 34 and the blocking pin is indicated at 35, this blocking pin being slidably mounted in the casing 3 and having a depression 36 similar to the depression I6 described in connection with the pin I4 and depressions 3'1 and 38, latch pin 39 and springA 40 to hold it in different positions of adjustment. In the modification, however, the depression 36 is angularly arranged on the under side of the pin 35 to accommodate it to the modiiied arrangement.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a gun of the kind described, an impact member, a sear to hold said member cocked, a trigger to release said sear upon a predetermined movement of said trigger, a detent directly connected with said trigger, whereby further movement of said trigger will cause said detent to engage with said impact member to hold said member cocked, said trigger when released from pres-- sure thereon operating to release said detent from said impact member, and controllable means to limit the movement of said trigger to `permit it to release the sear but prevent engagement of the detent with said impact member.
2. In a gun of the kind described, an impact member, a scar to hold said member cocked, a trigger to release said sear upon a predetermined movement of said trigger, a detent connected with said trigger and operable by a further movement of said trigger to engage with said impact member to hold said member cocked, said trigger when released from pressure thereon operating to release said detent from said impact member, and controllable means to limit the movement of said trigger to permit it to release the sear but prevent engagement of the detent with said impact member, said means being adjustable to permit the further movement of said trigger to move said detent into temporary engagement with said impact member.
3. In a gun of the character described, an impact member, a sear to hold said member cocked, a trigger connected with said Sear to release said sear upon a predetermined movement of said trigger, a detent connected with said trigger operable by a further movement of said trigger to engage with said impact member to hold said member cocked when said trigger is released from pressure thereon, and controllable means cooperating with said sear to limit the movement of said trigger to permit it to release the sear but prevent engagement of the detent with said impact member, said means being adjustable to permit the further movement of said trigger to move said detent into temporary engagement with said impact member.
4. In a gun of the kind described, an impact member, a sear to hold said member cocked, a trigger to release said sear upon a predetermined movement of said trigger, a detent operable by a further movement of said trigger to engage with said impact member to hold said member cocked until said trigger is released from pressure thereon, and an adjustable pin having relatively high and low points cooperating with the parts whereby the high point will limit the movement of the trigger to permit it to disengage the sear from the impact member and the low point will permit a further movement of the trigger to permit disengagement of the sear from said impact member and also engagement of the detent with said impact member.
5. In a gun of the kind described, an impact member, a sear to hold said member cocked, a trigger to release said sear on a predetermined movement of said trigger, a detent rigidly connected with said trigger and extending therefrom and operable by a further movement of said trigger to engage said impact member to hold said member cocked, said trigger when released from pressure thereon moving said rigidly connected detent from engagement with said impact member, and manually operable controllable means shiftable to different positions to limit the movement of said trigger to permit it to release said sear but prevent engagement of the detent with said impact member, but when manually operated to a dierent position acting to permit a further movement of said trigger to engage said detent with said impact member when the sear is released from said impact member.
