ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 14, 1941 UNITED STATES COMBINATION 'roo'rnanusn AND POWDER HOLDER Joseph C. Tedesco, Arcade, N. Y.
Application March 20,- 1940, Serial No. 324,996
Claims.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a combined toothbrush and powder holder or container.
It has for one of its objects to provide a corn- 5 bined toothbrush and powder holder which is sanitary and convenient in use, and which is especially desirable and handy for traveling as well as domestic use.
Another object is to provide a combination or dual container of this character which is so designed and constructed that the brush and powder compartment are completely isolated to prevent any moisture from the used brush seeping into the powder and caking it, and wherein a valve means is operatively associated with the powder compartment and a cover operatively associated with both the brush compartment and such valve means for normally sealing both compartments and permitting the dispensing of the powder only at such times that the cover is opened.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a combination holder of this character which is simple, compact and inexpensive in construction and which is easily manipulated.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved toothbrush and powder holder. Figure 2 is an enlarged central longitudinal section thereof. Figure 3 is a cross section taken in the plane of line 3-3, Figure 2. Figure 4 is a similar view taken in the plane of line 44, Figure 2, showing the latch for locking the cover of the holder.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the drawing, the numeral l0 indicates a substantially rectangular hollow casing open at one end and closed at the other end by a wall I l. Extending throughout the length of the casing is a longitudinal partition l2 defining a tooth powder compartment l3 and a toothbrush compartment H as shown clearly in Figure 2. The brush compartment is open at one end for the insertion and removal of the brush and the powder compartment is preferably closed adjacent the open end of the casing by a transverse partition IS. A screw plug I6 is provided in the end walls ll of the casing in line with the powder compartment for refilling purposes. Adjacent one end of the powder compartment and preferably in the adjoining side wall ll of the casing "I is a powder discharge or escapement aperture l8 through whichthe powdered dentifrice is shaken and deposited on-the brush for use. Slidingly arranged in a longitudinal guide groove l9 formedin the exterior face of the casing-wall H for controlling the aperture I8 is a slide valve substantially equal to the length of the casing and whose outer or front end, in the closed position of the valve shown in Figure 2,- is flush with the open end of the casing l0, while its inner or rear end abuts against a stop 'or shoulder 2| formed at the correspondingend of the guide groove. The valve is joined to the casing-wall H by a pin and slot connection 22 which limits its opening movement. A boss or finger-piece 23 is provided on thevalve'for manipulating it to its open and closed positions.
Applied to the open end of the casing I0 is a closure member or cover 24 which performs the dual function of normally closing or sealing the brush compartment and of cooperating with the slide valve 20 for maintaining it closed and preventing the escape of the powder when the holder is not in use, and which permits of the opening of such valve when the cover is opened to remove the brush for use. To this end, the cover is hinged at 25 to the casing 10 and is adapted to extend over the open end thereoflincluding the adjoining end of the valve 20,1iri the manner shown in Figures 1 and 2, a sliding latch bar 26,. mounted on the rear side of the cover, has a' tongue 21 adapted to engage a mating slot 28 formed in the wall ll of the casing for securely clamping the cover in place. A finger button 29 fixed to the latch bar and extending through a slot 30 in the cover is provided for easy manipula tion by the user. It will be seen that when the cover is latched in place it abuts against the opposing front end of the slide valve, thus preventing accidental displacement of the valve toan open position.
In using the-improved holder, assuming the powder compartment is filled and the tooth brush is in the brush compartment, shown clearly in Figure 2, the bar 28 is unlatched and the door opened to allow the removal of the tooth brush and at the same time release the slide valve 20 and permit its adjustment to the open position shown by dotted lines inFigure 2. The holder is then shaken and the dentifrice powder is de- 4 posited onto the brush. After use, the brush is inserted in the holder and the door closed andlatched in place with the result that the slide valve is automatically shifted to its closed or powder-sealing position.
I claim as my invention: v 1. A combination toothbrush and powder holder, comprising a. casing closed at one end and open at the other and divided longitudinally to provide a brush compartment and a powder compartment, the latter having a'. discharge aperture in one of its outer side walls, a shiftable closure guided on said 'wall for governing the opening and closing of said discharge aperture and including a portion substantially flush with the open end of the casing in the closed position of the closure, and a cover applied to the open compartment, the latter having a discharge aperture in one of its outer side walls and adjacent the closed end of the casing, a cover applied to the open end of said casing, and valve means guided on said casing for movement lengthwise thereof and disposed in cooperative relation at -one end with said discharge aperture and at its opposite end with said cover for maintaining the aperture closed when the cover is closed and permitting opening of the aperture when the cover is opened.
3. A combination toothbrush and powder holder, comprising a casing closed at one end and open at the other and divided longitudinally to provide a brush compartment and a powdercompartment, the latter having a discharge aperture in one of its outer side walls, a cover applied to the open end of said casing, and a slide valve guided on the apertured wall of the casing for movement lengthwise thereof to and from an open position, one end of said valve abutting said cover in its closed position to retain the valve in a corresponding position.
4. A combination toothbrush and powder holder, comprising a casing divided longitudinaly to provide a brush compartment and a powder compartment, the latter being closed at its sides and ends and having a discharge aperture in one 01 its outer side walls adjacent one end of the casing and the brush compartment being open at the opposite end of the casing for the insertion and removal of the brush, a slide valve coextensive with and guided in the apertured wall of the casing for movement to and from an open position, said valve in its open position uncovering said discharge aperture and extending at its opposite end beyond the open end of the brush compartment, and a cover applied to said casing for closing said brush compartment and dis-. posed for abutting engagement with the opposing end of said valve for maintaining it closed when the cover is closed.
5. A combination toothbrush and powder holder, comprising a casing divided longitudinally to provide a brush compartment and a powder compartment, the latter being closed at its sides and ends and having a discharge aperture inone of its outer side walls and the brush compartment being open atone end for the insertion and removal of'the brush, said apertured wall having a longitudinal guide groove therein extending from the aperture to that end of the casing adjoining the open end of the brush compartment. a slide valve guided in said groove for movement therein to and from an aperture closing position and extending beyond the open end of the casing in its open position, and a cover applied to said casing for closing said brush compartment and disposed for engagement with the opposing end of the slide valve for maintaining the latter closed when the cover is closed.
