UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
BENJAMIN A. DAVIS, OF PETERSBURG, VIRGINIA.
IM PROVEMENT lN ELASTIC DRIVING-REINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,468, dated December 9, 1879 application filed October 16, 1879.
To all whd'm it may concem:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN A. DAVIS, of Petersburg, in the county of Dinwiddie and State of Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Elastic Driving-Rein; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
All horses, when in motion, necessarily more the head independently of the body, which causes a jerk or pull on the drivers or riders hand, and, the mouth of the horse be- 3 ing very sensitive, the effect is unpleasant to both driver (or rider) and the horse. This result is due to the want of elasticity of the 7 part of this specification, Figure l is a side view of a horses head, with bridle attached, having my improvement applied to the driving-reins. of a driving-rein having my improvement attached.
. The driving-reins proper, A A, are shown constructed and'attached to the bit B in the usual manner.
My improved attachment consists of an elastic piece or strap, 0, which is attached to each rein' A, preferably at a point near the Fig.2 is an edge view of a portionbit B. Said piece C may be constructed of a thick band of rubber, to each end of which a snap-hook, a, is attached.
Metal rings b are secured by leather loops to the reins A at points which are farther apart than the length of the piece 0 and its attached hooks, so that when the attachment is made the rein will be contracted or drawn up, thus forming a loop, 0, as shown in Fig. 2-that is to say, the elastic strap 0 holds the rein A thus looped when not under tension, but it, of
course, gradually expands when the rein is pulled, so that the loop 0 becomes contracted more or less, and when the pull is sufficient the strap will be drawn out to its full length, and the rein straight.
Thus the elastic strap allows the horse to move his head without giving a sudden pull on the reins A A, and relieves the mouth of severe and sudden jerks.
If required, the strap 0 may be instantly detached from the driving-reins, and the construction of the parts also enables the attachment to be easily applied to reins already in use.
What I claim is- The combination, with the guiding-lines A A, having the rings 11 b attached, as shown, of the elastic piece 0 and the snapliooks attached thereto, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 15th day of October, 1879.
BENJAMIN A. DAVIS.
