Description

DE wrr'r RAMSEY Aug. 11, 1942. 2 2,292,772
- I noon MOUNTING Filed April 10, 1941 ATTORNEYS Patented Aug. 11, 1942 2,292,772 noon MOUNTING De Witt Ramsey, Coral Gables, Fla. Application April 10, 1941, Serial-No.-387,'946
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to improvements in door mountings and is especially devised for hanging sliding doors in dwellings, bookcases, cabinets and the like.
An important object of the invention resides'inthe provision of a door mounting for sliding doors which includes a plate slidably mounted in a header track and a hanger blade associated therewith, said hanger blade being suspended from the plate and attached to the upper edge of the door, the plate and hanger blade assuring a quiet, smooth and positive operation upon actuation of the door.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure l is a fragmentary side elevational view of a sliding door mounted in a header track in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the sliding plate removed from the header track.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the hanger blade removed from the door.
Referring to the drawing for a more detailed description thereof, a door of the sliding type is generally designated by the reference numeral 8, the same being suspended from a header track generally designated by the reference numeral 9. The header track may be formed of a plurality of plies Ill and I I of wood held in laminated relation by any desired means and is adapted to be supported in the door frame wherever employed in a manner well known in the art. The lamination of the material adds strength to the header while reducing to a minimum the amount of warpage.
During the fabrication of the header 9 the lowermost ply II is milled internally to form a longitudinally extending recess l2 and a vertical recess l 3 communicating therewith, the latter recess extending throughout the length of the header. An elongated metal slide plate or pan f 4 is mounted for slidable movement within the recess I2, said plate being formed with upturned side flanges l5 and a longitudinal slot I6 in the bottom wall H, the slot I6 adapted to receive the hanger blade generally designated by the reference numeral I8. The slide plate I4 is preferably stamped from metal with the bottom face of the bottom wall I! formed with a smoothly polishedsurface preferably chromium-plated so as to bereadily slidable within the recess l2 upon opening and closing of the door 8. The corners of the plate I4 are rounded as is readily appar- 10 ent from Figure 4 of the drawing so as to eliminate any binding action during its travel through the recess.
The hanger blade I8 is suspended from the plate l4, said hanger blade being preferably stamped from sheet metal and formed with a foot portion I9 slotted as indicated at 20. The hanger blade I8 moves within the vertical recess I3 formed in the header 9 and extends through the slot I6 formed in the plate l4 and is attached to the plate by means of the pin 2| which extends through the opening 22 formed in said blade. The pin 2| is held in position by means of the side flanges l5 and the weight of the door 8 carried by the hanger blade will maintain the pin 2| in constant contact with the bottom wall IT. The upper end of the blade I8 is formed with an outwardly turned flange 23 to form a top sliding surface preventing the blade l8 from rising to a point where it might drag or jam against the header. The flange 23 has its upper surface highly polished and its edges rounded so as to alleviate the possibility of a binding action upon movement of the door.
A screw or similar fastening member 24 forms a means for attaching the hanger blade I8 to the upper edge of the door 8, said screw extending through the slotted portion 20 and into the surface of the door as disclosed in the drawing.
The entire unit including the header 9, slide plate l4 and hanger blade I8 will be assembled at the factory with the hanger blade ready for attachment to the door 8. This will mean a material saving of time and effort in the suspending of the door in a dwelling, cabinet or the like as well as the assurance that the units will operate satisfactorily by reason of the correct alignment and installation of the several parts of the invention.
It will be readily apparent that since the door is fixedly secured to the hanger blade and the hanger blade in turn secured to the slide plate l4 that upon movement of the door the plate M will freely and smoothly slide in the recess 2.
Also it will be understood, of course, by those skilled in the art that variations in the hereinabove described device involving the substitution of substantial equivalents for the devices described are intended to be comprehended within the spirit of the present invention and that the invention is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawing nor to the precise construction described and, therefore, such changes and modifications may be made therein as do not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a slide mounting for a door having a horizontal header frame section provided with a flat guide groove and a vertical slot connecting with the said groove, a slide member having a flat elongated bottom and upturned flanges at the sides and ends of the said bottom, the said slide member having a, width slightly less than the width of the guide groove and having a longitudinally directed slot at its center, a hanger member having a blade extended vertically through the slot in the header frame and the center slot of the slide member, a door engaging foot formed at the bottom end of the hanger member, a horizontally extending guide flange formed at the top of the hanger blade, the said blade having an aperture in the upper portion thereof, and a holder pin extended transversely through the said aperture in the blade and resting on the bottom of the slide member between the side flanges thereof, the said pin being of a length such that its removal from the aperture of the blade is precluded by the said side flanges when it is in hanger supporting position on the slide member.
2. In a slide mounting for a door having a horizontal header frame section provided with a flat groove and a vertical slot opening into the groove, a slide member having a, flat elongated rectangular shaped bottom and upturned flanges at the sides thereof, the said slide member being slidably fitted on the flat bottom portion of the guide slot and provided with a longitudinally directed center slot, a door supporting hanger blade extending vertically through the slot in the header frame section and the slot in the bottom of the slide member, the said blade having an aperture in its upper portion above the bottom of the slide member, and a supporting pin slidably extended through the aperture in the blade and having its end portions resting horizontally in a transverse position on the bottom of the slide member and between the side flanges thereof, the said pin having its length exceeding half the width of the slide member whereby it is held against sliding detachment from the blade when in supporting position on the bottom of the slide member.
