Description

June 2, 1942. H, M RAMEL l-:pALv x 2,284,987
PACKAGE Filed May 22, 1940 YPatented June 2, 1942 l' Y Y PACKAGE Herbert M. Ramel, University City, and Omar M.
Storey, St. Louis, Mo.,v Accessories Manufacturing assignors to Ramsey Corporation, St.
Louis, Mo., a corporation of Missouri Application May 22, 1940, Serial No. 336,514 1 claim. (Cl. 20o-fw) Our invention has relation to improvements in packages and it consists in the novel features of construction more fully set forth in the` specifications and pointed out in the claim.
V The present invention is an improving departure over that shown in our co-pending application Serial No. 331,520 ledjApril 25, 1940, and
-serves the same general purpose, having as its principal object the provision of a piston ring package adapted equally well for purposes of display as for shipment.
Like the invention of the application referred to, the present invention also has for its object the provision of a package which is convenient for the one who handles the articles, such as an automobile mechanic, but at the same time the present invention embodies features enabling the articles to be more quickly and expeditiously packed. There are also embodied in our improved package features of construction that add to the durability of the package so that it is not easily injured in handling and shipping.
These improved features of construction, as well as other advantages embodied in the invention, will be better apparent from a detailed description thereof in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of our improved package containing a complete set of' three piston rings for one piston, said package being opened for use to expose all of said rings, and part of the package being broken away; Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional detail taken through the package on the line 2-2 of Fig, 1; Fig. 3 is a face View of the package folded forshipment; Fig. 4 is a development of the blank sheet which when properly folded constitutes our improved package; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan view of a modied form of package showing one of the panels with a piston ring disposed therein; and Fig. 6 is an enlarged cross-sectional detail taken through the package on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawing, B constitutes a blank cut from a sheet of stiff paper or cardboard (or other suitable material) on which are marked oif suitable score lines, creases or merely printed lines a; a and intersecting transverse line b to divide the blank into two rows of juxtaposed panels I, I, I and 2, 2, 2. A plurality of tongues 3, 3, 3 are integrally formed with panels I, I, I opposite to the panels 2, 2, 2, and there is a slot 4 disposed transversely within each panel I for the purpose of receiving the corresponding tongue 3 when the latter is folded upwardly along the line or crease 5 which extends entirely across the Vjuxtaposed rows of panels I, I, I.
, threaded through .through and to the rear of The tongues 3, 3, 3 are folded upwardly and throughl piston rings R, R', R" previously disposed over the respective panels I, I, I and shown in Fig. 1. Thereafter the panels 2, 2, 2 are 'collectively folded over the rear sides of the panels I, I, I to serve as a protective covering for the ends of the tongues 3, 3, 3 which project said' panels (Figs. 1
and 2).
It will be observed that each of the slots 4, 4, 4 is bisected by a short slot 6 perpendicular thereto, which form adjacent naps l, 'l is each of the panels. This is an optional d' construction, and when used enables the packer to insert the tongue more easily through the slot 4 without tearing the latter.
It will be observed that when the tongues 3, 3, 3 are folded upwardly over the respective rings R, R', R" and securely held in their respective slots 4, each of the rings is disposed in a pocket 8 formedbetween each panel I and each tongue 3. After the rings are secured in place in their respective pockets 8, the outside panels I are folded over the center panel I to form a compact package as shown in- Fig. 3, with the rear panels 2 forming a protective covering for the package contents.
In Figs. 5 and 6 we show a modiflcation of the invention in which the plurality of tongues 3, 3, 3 give way to a single ilap 9 which, when folded over panels I', forms juxtaposed pockets I0 for the piston rings R. However, in this modied form pockets I0 are held closed by a tongue II formed in each rear panel 2' and brought forwardly through slot 4' formed in panel I' as in the main form. The slot 4' may also be .bisected by a slot 6' perpendicular to it to form iiaps 1', 1', which will yield in inserting the tongue II so that it may be moreeasily inserted through the slot to hold the pocket I0 closed.
Having described our invention, we claim:
A package for comparatively fiat articles, said package comprising a series of integrally formed panels arranged in juxtaposition, a protective nap integrally formed with the continuous edge of the collective panels and folded over said panels to form a pocket at the lower part of each and overlying the ap.
