HANDBAG Original Filed May 29, 1939 INVENTOR Jess/ w /V. [0W5 I BY ATTORNEY i 9% Patented May 12, 1942 HANDBAG Joseph N. Lowe, New York, N. Y. Original application May 29, 1939, Serial No.
276,292. Divided and this 1941, Serial No. 401,573
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to hand bags for carrying articles of different weight, more particularly for carrying the light-weight articles used by a woman, and the improvements are readily adaptable to such hand bags as are shown, described and claimed in U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,676,229, dated July 3, 1928, Nos. 1,701,973 and 1,701,974, dated February 12, 1929, and No. 1,732,842, dated October 22, 1929.
This application is a division of application Ser. No. 276,292, filed May 29, 1939, and its principal object is to protect the exterior finishing material or fabric of the bag, which is usually waterproof, from being marred or damaged by the action of the hookless fastenings when they are operated to close the bag.
Other objects are to provide an attractive hand bag which, while it has considerable strength and endurance, is not necessarily expensive, but, on the contrary, can be sold reasonably.
The invention consists of certain features of construction and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and then claimed with reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention, and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bag showing the cover in open position; and
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of a fragmentary portion of the bag.
The bag body In is provided with a hinged cover II, and the bag is adapted to be opened and closed through the medium of hookless fastenings I 2, l3, which are secured to the outside of and around the bag body, and to the overlapping outer edge or flange of the cover so as to extend fully around the bag except where the cover is hinged thereto. The hookless fastenings l2, [3 are provided with the usual operating tab M. A handle I 5 may be used. I
The outer covering or peripheral band l6 around the bag may be of any suitable thin, flexible material, such as fabric or imitation leather, and the cover may be covered with similar material. The bag body has a suitable lining H, which may be of light ornamental and attractive fabric.
Between the peripheral band I6 and the lining I! the surrounding wall of the bag body may be reinforced by a stifiening sheet or sheets l8 of cardboard, fiberboard or the like, which preferably extend the full depth of the bag and entirely around the surrounding wall, as disclosed in the beforementioned patents.
It is found desirable to provide means for providing a suitable foundation for the operation of hookless fasteners when such are used, and to this end, as shown in Fig. 2, the tape I9 of fasapplication July 9,
tening elements I2 is stitched into the folded flexible strip 20, which is connected at its fold by a line of stitching 2| with the bag body, while it. The upper edge of the backing-up strip 22 preferably terminates adjacent the mouth of the bag. Stitching 23 may preferably also pass through sheet I8.
The reinforcing sheet 18 in the bag body provides a strong foundation for the backing-up strip during the operation of the hookless fastenings, but the said strip is relied upon principally to prevent wear of the covering of the bag by the operation of the hookless fastenings.
Obviously the invention is susceptible of modification which does not depart from the scope of the claims.
What I claim as new is:
1. A hand bag or the like, including a bag body with a covering of flexible material and having a mouth, a cover, hookless fastenings extending around the mouth and cover, and fastener backing-up means stiffer than the flexible material and located between such material and the fastenings secured to the body, such backing-up means consisting of a thin strip extending substantially to the rim of the bag around the outside of the bag, and above and below the fastenings when the bag is closed, such backing strip preventing the hookless fastening elements from wearing the material of the covering when closing the bag by the hookless fastenings.
2. A hand bag or the like, including a bag body with a covering of flexible material and having a mouth, a lining in the body, a bag-reinforcing strip between the lining and covering, a hinged cover, hookless fastenings extending partly around the mouth and cover, and fastener backing-up means stiffer than the flexible material and located between such material and the fastenings secured to the body, such backing-up means consisting of a thin strip extending substantially to the rim of the bagaround the outside of the bag, and back of the fastenings when the bag is closed, such backing strip preventing the hookless fastening elements from wearing the material of the covering when closing the bag by the hookless fastenings.
JOSEPH N. LOWE.
