N-PETER5, FHOTO LITHOGRAPIIEE WAQHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIJAH S. WIOKLIN, OF BLACK RIVER FALLS, WISCONSIN.
CLOTHESQPOUNDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,010, dated May 25, 1880.
Application filed February 13, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH S. WIGKLIN, of Black River Falls, in the county of Jackson and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful I mprovement-s in Clothes- Pounders; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others sl'illed in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a side view. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a view of the piston detached.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to clothes-pounders and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafterfully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
As represented in the drawings hereto annexed, my improved clothes'pounder consists of a funnel-shaped body, A, provided at its lower wide end with an annular cylindrical rim, B, and at its upper end with a collar, 0, which forms a bearing for the sliding handle D.
E is a pisto'n, consisting of a plate provided with a flange, F, haX'ing an annular groove, G, in which suitable packing H is secured to cause the piston to fit nicely in the cylinder B, in which it slides. Upon its upper side the plate E is provided with aconical base, I, terminating in a socket, J, to receive the handle D, which is provided with a cross-piece, K,
projecting through slots L L in the sides of socket J, in which, therefore, the handle D has a limited sliding movement.
Handle D extends downwardly to the plate E, which is provided with a central perforation,.M, closed by the lower end of'said handle, which thus performs the function of a valve. Orifices N O are formed in the base I and funnel-shaped body A, respectively, as shown.
P is a spring adjusted upon handle D between the collar 0 and a cross-piece, Q, and operating, as shown, to keep the handle and piston automatically in a raised position. Bis a nib or handle, adjustable upon the handle D so as to enable the machine to be more conveniently operated.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed.
When the machine is forced down against the clothes contained in a tub with soap and water, the downward motion of the piston forces the Water through the clothes, which are thereby cleaned. When the pressure is released the spring P raises the piston and at the same time automatically opens the valve for the passage of air and for the escape of any water which may have leaked in.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As animprovementin clothes-pounders, the
combination of the body A, having rim B,
sliding handle, D, piston E, having a limited sliding movement upon said handle, and provided with a perforation, M, and the spring P, all combined and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified. I11 testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELIJ AH S. WIGKLIN. Witnesses:

ERIK TOLLOFSON.
