SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,523, dated May 11, 1880.
' Application filed March 29, 1880. (No model.) i A To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES F. HAR LOW, of Boston, Massachusetts, and WILLIAM P. BARKER, of Orange, Massachusetts, have jointly invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Clutches 3 and we do hereby declare that the same are fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
The object of our improvement is to provide a simple and effective clutch for use in connection with any suitable mechanism where it is desired to communicate motion in one direction only to a, shaft or other mechanical :5 device.
Our invention consists in a hollow slotted shaft having a springpressed spindle provided with a projecting pin adapted to move longitudinallywithin the bore and slot of the shaft, in combination with a rotary wheel or sleeve on said shaft, formed with a face-cam 0r ratchet-teeth, which engage with the pin in order to drive the shaft, also, in the combination with said device, ofa cap servingto conceal the slotted end of the shaft, together with the ratchet-sprin g and pin.

E is a spindle having a limited longitudinal movement within the hollow end of the shaft, and F a pin secured to said spindle and projecting at one or both ends through slots G 0 in the shaft B.
On the face of the wheel D adjoining the pin F there are formed cams or curved ratchetteeth H, which engage with the pins F when the wheel is turned forward in the direction of the arrow. The effect of this engagement is to rotate the shaft B, through which the pins F pass, and thereby to drive any mechanism connected therewith.
When the motion is reversed by turning 5 the wheel D backward the shaft B stands still, the sloping cam-faces of the teeth H pressing back the pins F in the slots G against the resistance of a light spiral spring, 1, coiled around. the spindle E, which spring returns the pins to their working position at every half-turn of the wheel. backward, so that they will engage with the teeth H immediately and automatically when the wheel is again given forward motion.
b When it is desired to hold the teeth disen- 6o gaged the spindle and pins may be moved in the hollow shaft and slots by means of the button K 011 the end of the spindle, and be slightly rotated until the pins enter lateral recesses of the slots G, so that the spring I cannot return them to engagement with the teeth H of the drive-wheel. While thus disengaged the wheel D may revolve freely in either direction without communicating motion.
' A cap, L, is slipped over the hollow end of 7.0 the shaft and held in position by a set-screw or pin, M, bearing against or entering the shaft. This cap is hollow to permit the rota tion of the ratchet-teeth, the movement of the spring, and the reciprocation of the pins F, all 7 5 which parts it conceals and protects. It has the additional functions of a shoulder for the end of the spring to bear against and a collar to keep the wheel D in position for steady movement on its shaft.
We claim as of our invention 1. The hollow slotted shaft B and the springpressed spindle and pin, arranged to move longitudinally therein, in combination with the drive-wheel D, provided with the cam or 85 ratchet teeth H, substantially as set forth.
2. The toothed drive-wheel D H, and the hollow shaft B, formed with a slot, G, and a recessor offset thereof, G, in combination with a spring, a spindle having a projecting 90. pin, and a button or equivalent device by which they may be operated, substantially as Set forth.
3. The driving-wheel, the hollow shaft, and the reciprocating spindle and pin, in combi- 5 nation with a sleeve or hollow cap, L, adapted to conceal the locking parts and to form a'support for the wheel and spring, substantially as set forth.
