Description

Dec. 23, 1941. I R, WELLS 2,267,179
CONTAINER Filed June 1, 1938 INVENTOR fiagmozzd 11.111415.
Patented Dec. 23, 1941 UNITED STATE.
OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in perfume containers and has particular reference to novel means and method of making the same.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a perfume container having a casing of relatively non-shatterable material in which a shatterable perfume container may be placed and which is so constructed as to enable the ready use of the perfume and yet seal the perfume against leakage from the shatterable container when not in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel construction and method of making a perfume container wherein the stopper is normally resiliently locked in sealed position with the container and which locking means may be easily manipulated to permit removal of the stopper.
Another object is to provide a novel construction and method of making devices of the above nature.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following descrip tion taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and it will be apparent that many changes may be made in the details of constructo the exact details of construction, arrangement of parts and method shown and described as the preferred form only has been given by way of illustration.
Referring to the drawing: I
Fig. I is a perspective view of the device embodying the invention; and
Fig. II is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the device illustrated in Fig. I.
The invention is directed particularly to the provision of a relatively small perfume container which may be carried in the users purse or handbag and relates particularly to the provision of a container wherein the stopper means used for sealing the container may be easily removed and thereafter held in positive sealed relation with the container.
The invention also relates to the provision of a combined applicator and stopper means which may be easily made use of in the application of perfume and in the sealing of said perfume in the container.
Referring more particularly to the drawing wherein like characters of reference designate like parts throughout the several views, the device embodying the invention comprises broadly an 55 outer casing I of metal or other suitable nonfrangible material having a latch member 2 pivotally attached thereto as illustrated at 3. A
container 4 of glass, metal or other desirable ma terial, is positioned within the casing I and is adapted to bear, at its lower end, against a coil spring 5 securedto the bottom of the container, as illustrated in'Fig. II. 7 a The container 4' is held within the casing I, against the action of the resilient means 5, by means of integral straps B, as illustrated in Fig. I, which are bent to overlie the end of the container 4 opposite the resilient means 5. The container 4 is of such a length as compared with the length of the casing I, as to provide a clearance I whereby the container 4 may be moved longitudinally of the casing I against the action of the resilient means 5.
The container 4 has a reduced neck portion 8 which is provided with a tapered opening 9 to receive the tapered portion of a combined applicator and stopper III. The member I0 has a relatively long rod-like portion II which extends through the opening 9 into the perfume I2 and which constitutes the applicator. The said member Ii) is provided with a cap-like portion I3 which is adapted to engage with the end of the neck-like portion II and is also provided with a ball-like head I4, as shown in Fig. II, which is adapted to fit within an opening I5 in the latch member 2 and be held therein under the action of the resilient means 5 which normally tends to force the container 4 upwardly and thereby press the cap-like portion I3 into engagement with the end of the neck 8 and simultaneously hold the head I4 in the opening I5 in the latch member 2. It will be noted, as illustrated at I6, that when the parts are in locked relation with each other there will be a slight space between the straps 6 and the immediate adjacent portion of the neck 8. This is due to the fact that the container 4 is urged downwardly against the action of the resilient means 5 when the latch member 2 is snapped over the ball member I 4 of the combined applicator and stopper means II). When it is desired to use the applicator the latch member 2 is snapped clear of the ball end I4 wherein the container 4 will be urged upwardly against the straps 6, the said straps being adapted to hold the container 4 against dejection by the spring 5. The combined stopper and applicator Ill may then be withdrawn from the container 4 with a suitable amount of perfume on the end of the applicator.
If desired. the opening I5 in the latch may be eliminated and the ball-like end of the stopper l0 may be provided with a flat over which the latch may be snapped to hold the stopper in the container 4. The engaging tapers of the Opening 9 and the stopper prevents leakage.
The spring 5 may be secured to the base l6 of the casing l by solder or other suitable means. If desired, a washer I! of cork, rubber or other suitable material, may be carried by the cap-like portion l3 to aid in sealing the open end of the container 4.
The main casing l, although shown of rectangular contour may be made of any contour shape desired, and is preferably formed of a metal which will provide ample protection against accidental breaking of the container 4.
Suitable design engravings may beplaced upon the outer surface of the casing l' as wellas upon the latch portion 2. It is also to be understood that the casing I may be formed of precious or filled metal if desired;
From the foregoing description it will-be seen that simple, efiicient and economical means andmethodhave'been provided for forming a deviceof the character described;
Having described my invention, I claim:
In adevice of the character described, a container housing having a bottom and relatively thin, single, continuous side walls, a U shaped latch member of relatively fiat sheet-like material pivoted to opposite side walls adjacent the upper edges thereof, the base of the U shaped latch member being adapted to form a contact seat, a container of substantially the same shape as the housing fitted in said housing and having a neck portion and stopper opening in the upper end thereof adjacent the U shaped latch member, resilient means interposed between the opposite end of the container and the base of t e housing, an applicator extending into the co tainer through the opening in the neck there f and having a stopper portion adapted to close th said opening and a ball shaped portion adapted tobe engaged by the contact seat of the U shaped member and to be retained in engagement therewith by the action of the resilient means between the base of the container and the housing, pliableportions on the upper end of said housing adjacent the neck of the container adapted to engage the neck of the container to retain the container" in the-housing when the U shaped latch member is out of engagement with the ball shaped head portion and which pliable portions may. be bent away from said neck portion to allow removal of said container from said housing.
