Dec. 23, 1941. c. DRL JCKS SHOE CLEANING AND POLISHING GUIDE Filed July 25, 1940 INVENTOR Carlflruck! ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 23, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT lomcc 2,266,962 I, snon CLEANING AND POHSHINGGUIDE 7 Carl Drucks, New York, N. Y. J Application July 25, 1940, serial $0,347,2
4,0laims. (o1. 15+2i0) i i This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a shoe cleaning and polishing guide.
The invention proposes an article as mentioned which is characterized by a plate having a front end and a rear nd, and a block of felt slidably mounted on the plate and having a front flanged end and a rear curved end, whereby the block of felt may be placed with its ends in specific relation to the end of said plate for assisting in cleaning and polishing shoes as hereinafter more fully described.
More specifically, the invention proposes that the block of felt, or similar material be divided into end sections of diiferent colors, or material to indicat the cleaning end and the polishing end, as will be hereinafter more fully explained;
Still further the invention contemplates a novel arrangement for slidably mounting the block of felt and for releasably and removably mounting the felt so that it may be removed and changed when desired.
Still further the invention proposes an arrangement for releasably holding saidblock of felt in various forward or rearward positions on the plate. V
For further comprehension of the invention, and of th objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure: v
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a shoe cleaning and polishing guide constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a bottom elevational view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line '33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an elevational view of the article, illustrated schematically in its position when it is used in cleaning the welt of a shoe.
Fig; 5 is an elevational view of the article in another position when it is used for polishing the lower portion of the shoe upper of a shoe.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view similar to Fig; 3 but illustrating a modified construction.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a similar view to Fig. 1, but illustrating another form of the invention.
Fig. 9 is a vertical sectional view taken on the lin 9-9 of Fig. 8.
The shoe cleaning and polishing guide, in accordance with this invention, includes a plate I0 having a front end m and a rear end NW. A block of felt H is slidably mounted on'the plate In and has a front flanged end l l and a rear curved en'd Il The construction is such that the block of felt ll may be placed with its ends in specific relation to the ends of the plate ID.
More specifically, the felt block II is slidably guided on the plat H) by several prongs l2 stamped from the material of the plate and extended upward along the sides of the block II. The block I I also is provided with a headed tubular member l4 engaged. through the material thereof. This tubular member has a 'bottom head M The bottom portion of the tubular member l4 passes through an elongated slot [5 in the plate I0. The edge portions of the head I l slidably hold the tubular member l4 in position through the slot I5- A washer I6 is extended over the top end of the tubular member M. A holding screw ll threadedly engages the top end of thetubular member l4 and holds the washer 16' in position. A pair of side flanges I8 is formed integral with the sides of theplate l0 and extend a short distance beneath the bottom face of the plate l0 towards each other and serve to cover over portions of the head 'M -of the headed tubular member l4. At one of -'their ends the side flanges l8 are formed with semi-circular cutout portions Ill through which the headed stud l4 may be removed when in a certain position. It is necessary that the head M be aligned with the cutouts l8 to permit the removal thereof.
The felt block has one half of its compass ll dyed or colored black or some other dark color, and the other half l l of a lighter shade or color.
The article is used in the following manner:
The front flanged end I l of the felt block I l is engaged on the edge and top portions of the welt and sole A of a shoe having a-shoe upper B.- The plate In is shifted so as to extend over and reinforce the flanged end portion Il In this position the guide may be moved along the edge portions of the welt and sole II for cleaning the same. Preferably, the front end portion of the felt ll should be saturated with water or other cleaning fluid prior to the cleaning operation. 0
In Fig. 5 another 'use of the article is shown. In this figure the felt block H is at the top and the plate In is at the bottom. The plate I0 is moved to a position so as to have its rear end engage in the junction between the shoe'upper B and the welt and sole A. Then the rear end I l of the felt block II is engaged against the adjacent base portions of the shoe upper B. The
block II is then moved back and forth along the base portion of the shoe upper for cleaning the same.
Polish or other cleaning substance may be applied on said rear end ll to facilitate the polishing operation. Preferably the rear end I l is curved to conform with the natural curvature of the shoe upper B in the vicinity of the welt or sole A of the shoe.
In Figs. 6 and 7 another embodiment of the invention has been disclosed which is very similar to the prior form, distinguishing merely in the fact that the headed tubular member I4 is slightly longer so that there is a projecting portion I 4 projecting above awasner' llfplelfeil on the top of the block H. An expansion spring 2| is mounted upon this projecting portion, and acts between the head of the screw l1 and the washer l6 for urging the headed tubular mem-.
ber l4 upwards. Then the edge portions of" the head 14 of the headed tubular member 14 engage serrations 22 extended along the sides of the elongated slot1l5. The underside of the head I is formed with complementary serrations 22' engaging the serrations 22.
The article, in accordance with this form of the invention is used in the identical manner to that described relative to the prior form, except for the fact that the felt block Il may be held invariousfixed positions on the plate In without the necessity of manually holding it so. The spring 2| acts indirectly to so hold the block ll. When 'it is desired to shift the block ll along the plate- In it is first necessary that pressure be'applied on the screw IT. This presses-down the tubular member l4, compressing the spring"2l.
Thehead H then has itsse'rr'ations 22 dis engaged from the'se'rrations' 22. The block- H inay'n'owbe movedfor'wards or rearwards to any selected position. When the screw I1 is released, the spring 2| will move the tubular member l4 back to its original position in which theserrations 22 reengage the serrations 22 holding the felt block I l in it's new position.
In 'Figs."8 and 9, the plate 10' is formed with ane'longated opening '25 which terminates in an enlarged" rectangular opening 25 at one end. A head'edmember 26" is embedded'ina block of felt 21,so that its head 26* extends beyond the upper face?! of'the felt block 21, so that the enlarged head '26 rnay be'pro'jected through the enlarged opening '25 of the plate Ill and act as a guide to permit the felt block 21 'to slide with respect to the plate ID.
This arrangement permits the front flanged end 21 or the rear curved end 21 to be covered or'b'e free of the edges l'fl 'or In respectively, of the plate [0. I n
It is to be understood that this shoe cleaning and polishing guide may be used to clean any portion of the upper or sole of the shoe where a 'ontrast of colors is present. I
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is' to be understood that I do'not limit myself to the precise 'c 6nstructioris herein disclosed, and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
